Armads the Doom Bringer

PostPosted: Wed May 20, 2009 10:00 pm

Minoru had failed before, but this time the cube went flying out of his hands, bounced off a tree and hit him in the face, knocking him on his butt. He picked up the annoying three-dimensional square and was tempted to throw it into a pit and bury it with rocks. There was some good news however; Minoru had failed so bad that he had managed to hurt himself with a cube, and he had been holding it no less! He hoped that his classmates hadn't seen him fail so bad, he didn't want to give them any more reason to dislike him. He already felt like an outcast, and there was no reason for him to make them hate him even more.

Right before he could get back to trying the puzzle, it flew out of his hands again, reflected off the same tree, and then hit him in the groin. Minoru fell on the ground holding his crotch, the cube directly in his face as if to taunt him. This blasted cube was causing him physical pain, and that couldn't go unpunished. Picking up the cube that was causing him such discomfort, he silently swore that he would never give up until he had completed the Rubix cube. Minoru was sure that other people didn't hit themselves in the groin when trying to solve rubix cubes. It definitely wasn't on his list of things to do before he died. Becoming a ninja was, becoming a eunuch wasn't.

Failing again, Minoru was glad in the fact he managed to avoid hurting himself. These Rubix cubes were in fact deadly weapons that could be used for many different applications. Maybe he could encase one in lead and attach it to the end of a pole, making a Rubix warhammer or something to that degree. People would probably call him crazy, but he had seen the diabolically evil power that a rubix cube could unleash. There was only one thing left to do now that he had an idea. Solve this evil cube and become a better ninja so he could figure out more amazingly odd ideas.

Minoru was running out of ideas on what to do. This cube was making a fool out of him. As if he didn't do that enough on his own. Most normal ninjas had Jutsu and teachers to make fools out of them. Minoru on the other hand, had a cube that seemed to like watching him suffer. He would make sure that he got one of these annoying cubes to torture people when he was able to teach kids. Granted that was a long time away, but he would make a conscious effort to have them defeat this chaotic evil cube. It built character, and Minoru felt like he was building a skyscraper with tissue paper on a rainy day. One day he would teach them the lessons that he was learning now, whatever those lessons were. He wasn't quite sure what he was learning by solving the cube, but he guessed it was something about how life works or something.

"Hey look I failed again," said Minoru as he messed up the cube again. "I seem to lack the most basic of skills required as a ninja. Maybe I should have picked a different career path." Failing over and over made him wonder how this was supposed to go. Sure any task that mattered had to be somewhat challenging. Easy challenges didn't help anyone grow in ability. Did people like Moku-sama do things like this when he was a student? It wasn't like he was born as the Hokage's assistance. Speaking of Hokage, Minoru had never seen the Hokage. Wasn't the leader of the village supposed to be there and... Lead or something? What was stopping Moku-sama from taking power for himself? As the assistant he has to have at least the same amount of power as the Hokage. If he was any weaker he wouldn't be the one in charge right?

These last two sides were posing quite the problem. Sometimes Minoru wished he could catch a break with what he attempted. Just once he wished something would go right. He didn't want a miracle; Minoru just wanted something he tried to go right for once. He didn't want everything he tried to be a major pain. Sadly that kind of thing wasn't an option with his angry uncle complaining that he wasn't ever going to get anything done. Not like the old guy ever did anything but drink a lot and complain. Sure he held down the fort in the village, or what was left of it. The old guy hadn't had a job in years, but the money Minoru's parents sent back to him. He couldn't wait till he became a Genin and was able to have his own place to live. Sadly, he might never get to that point if he never completed this Rubix cube.

"Curse this infernal cube!" Minoru exclaimed as he failed yet again to complete the fifth side. Well it wasn't like there was much else to do at the moment. The other students were working on other tasks, but Minoru hoped that by finishing this cube he could somehow catch up to the other students. It wasn't reasonable to think that something as mediocre as this could help him. However at the moment it was what he was given and he assumed it was supposed to help him somehow. Why else would he be given this assignment? Surely it wasn't because there was nothing else to do. He could use the kunai he was given and rearrange the cube the way he wanted to, but that was dishonest and wouldn't be looked at favorably by his superiors. You never got anywhere near greatness if you cheated your way there.

After much deliberation and painstaking effort, Minoru managed to complete the second to last side. However he knew the last side would be the most difficult one to accomplish. He sighted to himself and started thinking up some way to get it done. Minoru would have to think his way through it instead of just brute forcing his way through. It seemed like he was slowly understanding how this cube worked. It was still challenging, but so was everything that was worth doing. He wondered how fast the Hokage or Moku-sama could do it. Perhaps they already knew the secret of this Rubix cube. What did "Rubix" mean anyway? Was it someone's name or was it an acronym? If it was a person was Rubix a Hokage somewhere? Minoru would have to look that up in the future.

Now that only one side remained, Minoru wasn't as worried about finishing fast. He knew that the last side would take the largest amount of time and energy to get right, so there was no point in hurrying. The cube wasn't going anywhere, unless it flew out of his hands again and ended up attacking him. Laughing slightly to himself at the thought of an "attack cube" he spun the cube's various sides looking for any sort of opening in the cube's logic. Every little bit helps the whole after all. If you neglected the basic things in a problem, you would never solve the bigger issues at hand. Doing something like that on a mission would probably get you killed, or worse, one of your friends killed. It was never good to be a liability; all it did was increase the burden on everyone else in the group. The last thing Minoru wanted to be was a burden.

All this time with the Rubix cube gave Minoru a lot of time to think about the world around him. In class there were other aspiring young ninjas, many perhaps going on to prominent leadership positions. Anyone of them might end up as the Hokage one day. Perhaps Minoru would gain that title one day too. Although Minoru had no interest in telling people what to do, he had found that what opportunities were presented to you were mostly up to chance as opposed to planning. Planning help of course, but any plan could be easily unraveled by a stroke of bad luck. It was almost as if destiny was rolling dice to see how things in everyone's life would go. Such a thought was crazy of course. Destiny probably had much better ways of figuring out important things like a person's direction in life.

Minoru wondered if ninja wrote books about their lives in their free time as he worked on the cube. He had never seen a library in the village; but with his lousy sense of direction it was very possible that he just missed it completely. The odds of that happening to him were very high; he barely remembered where he lived ninety percent of the time. Minoru wouldn't admit that though, since people would think him stupid. Seriously, what kind of ninja couldn't find where he or she lived? That kind of thing was unacceptable in any circumstance. For a normal person it was just dumb, but if a ninja did it, it showed real incompetence. He wondered if ninja who forgot where they lived were instantly stripped of the all-mighty headband. It was a fate that made Minoru shiver on the inside.

The cube had almost come together when Minoru accidently dropped the cube and lost his place, causing him to have to start over with what he was doing. This last side was a real headache for him, but he had no doubts that Moku-sama could do it in a heartbeat. For now Moku-sama was the person to aspire to, as Minoru had not yet met the Hokage. He wondered if Moku-sama really was a nice person on the inside. He seemed kind of bitter on the outside though. Hopefully he wouldn't become like Minoru's uncle, who was a bitter, drunken man who only survived because Minoru's parents sent money every month. He'd hate to see that happen to Moku-sama. The man had climbed too high to fall now. Unless he was killed in battle of course. If that was the case he gained untold amounts of respect for sacrificing his life for the state. That's what the state asked of every ninja after all.

Perhaps all this thinking was causing Minoru to lose his concentration with the task at hand. This cube wasn't going to solve itself after all. If it did it wouldn't be a training assignment. Unless there was a way to get the cube to solve itself and he was supposed to find it. Did it require chakra? It was a shame that Minoru didn't have good control over his chakra or he'd be able to try to see if that was the key. Maybe he'd ask someone after he solved it the old fashion way. Speaking of which, why is everything old called a "fashion?" You didn't wear ideas. Sure if you were talking about clothes people wore it would make sense, but people used that term when talking about how people approached problems. Were they just too lazy to think up a better way to refer to an old way of thinking or was that truly the best way to say it? It would have to wait for another day it seemed as the cube remained unsolved.

What was causing this cube to be so difficult? "Maybe Moku-sama put some sort of Jutsu on it to make it unsolvable..." Minoru thought as he kept struggling to figure out how to solve the puzzle. Truthfully he didn't know much about any form of Jutsu. All he knew was that there were three basic types, and that hand seals were involved. Oh, and ninja were the only ones who could use them. He didn't know what the other two types of Jutsu were called other than Ninjutsu, but he knew one was supposedly illusions and the other required you to use your fists. Beating someone into a bloody pulp hardly seemed like a ninja art though. There had to be some special ninja thing that went along with it. Otherwise all ninjas would be drunken street brawlers.

It was tempting to just give the cube up till later and go practice something else. But that wasn't Minoru's way. He would get this to work or he would die trying. Some would call what he did stupid, but hardship made you stronger. Out of all the things Minoru wanted to be, strong was at the top of the list. Only when he was stronger could he achieve his dreams. Weak people who weren't completely dedicated broke easily and couldn't be trusted easily. The teachers were there to break him physically, emotionally, and mentally. Minoru hoped that they would, since you couldn't move forward without tearing down the past. He understood that when you became a ninja you left behind your old life completely. Anything less than one hundred percent devotion was unacceptable in the ninja's world.
