"Are you okay?" Mayu sat up worriedly, seeing Demare grab at his stomach out of the corner of her eye. She relaxed as she realized that he was fine, lying back down on the cool grass.

"Okay," she nodded as she heard his words, smiling as she held up her pinky as well. She moved to hook her pinky around his, rolling onto her side as she focused her attention on their linked hands.

"I promise," the child smiled, letting her hand linger for a moment before dropping it and rolling back on her backside.

"Do you think you'll be able to get up in a little bit? If not, I can run out and get something for us to eat..." she mused, staring back up at the night sky.

"Hey, you try lifting one of those pillars, and then you tell me you don't need to rest for a while," Demare teased, chuckling a little bit as he dropped his hand back down to his side, his wings twitching a little bit against the ground. "I think I'm good at stuck for the moment... but I don't want to keep you from eating. Why don't you grab something? It's not like I'll be going anywhere..."

Honestly, he wasn't all that hungry. He was thirsty, however.

"Okay... You sure you'll be fine?" Mayu asked, sitting up. She ruffled a hand through his hair, bending over to kiss his forehead gently. "I'll be back in a second."

And with that, she pushed herself up, jogging down the path and out the large wrought-iron gates. Luckily for them, the street near which the cathedral was situated was lined with various shops and restaurants. The storeowners had decidedly taken advantage of the tourist hotspot, hoping to attract wandering eyes. Mayu was quickly able to find a nice cafe between all of the clothing and specialty stores, returning with a bag filled with packaged snacks and drinks in her hands.

"I didn't know what you wanted," she said as she sat back down in the grass, "so I just picked out some things that caught my eye. I don't think it's going to be very filling, but it'll do for now."

She didn't want to give up the hope of going to a restaurant with Demare, injured as he was. After all, this was still a date, sort of.. right?

"Mm, I'll be okay," he assured her, his blush deepening as she kissed his forehead. He then watched her leave, his smile fading as he thought about the day's events.

It was strange... They hadn't known each other for very long, and yet Demare felt like he'd known her his whole life. The memories they shared were more prominant than anything else, clutching onto his thoughts just like Karan. This was different, however. His heart would race when he thought about Mayu, feeling flustered and his mind sometimes unable to sort out what he was thinking. He felt like he could do ANYTHING when she was there, like everything was within his grasp and nothing was impossible. Today proved that, his eyes turning toward the rubble that was the cathedral. Had he been alone, would he even had been able to do any of that...?

The halfling looked back up to the night sky, lifting an open hand toward the heavens. Neko once told him that there were times she felt invincible when she thought about the people she cared for, because love was just that powerful. While it was one's own self doing the actions, it was that simple emotion that drove one to their limits... That allowed some to even laugh in the face of death. Demare closed his hand into a fist, as if he'd just grabbed one of the stars from above.

Was it possible that he was in...

His thought was cut off as Mayu spoke, having not even noticed the tree girl approach. Carefully, he struggled to get himself to sit upright, feeling some of his strength beginning to return. It was too soon to try and walk just yet, but the fact that he could get this far was a good sign.

"Oh, that's okay," he told her, smiling a little bit. "Getting something in our stomachs will do some good, filling or not. Once I can stand, we'll go somewhere to actually sit down and eat... Thank you, Mayu."

"No problem," Mayu nodded, already shuffling through the plastic bag. She hoisted it over to sit between them so that Demare could look through it as well, finally pulling out a cup of fruit among the junk food that she had also selected.

"This is sitting down and eating, though," she laughed, handing over the cup of iced tea she had brought for him as she sipped at her own. Her face softened as she looked up to the sky once more, speaking in a thoughtful kind of voice.

"...It is pretty nice sitting out here, though. You can't get a view like this, even in a big fancy restaurant."

"No where in the world," he whispered more to himself than anyone, not even referring to the night sky as he kept his eyes on Mayu. He sipped at his tea, his wings dropping downward a little bit.

Demare peered into the bag, shifting through a few things before picking out a little box of raisins, pulling the top open and popping a couple into his mouth. He then looked toward the stars once more, realizing something.

"Ya know, it's not as clear out here as it is in Barton. Do you think it's because of all the lights?"

"It's really nice out here, isn't it? A lot more quiet than near the clock tower or along any of the major roads."

She picked at her fruit, finally deciding to pick out all the pieces of strawberry and eat them before all the other fruit in the little plastic cup. As she prepared to pop a grape into her mouth, Mayu looked over to Demare, brows raised.

"You know, I've never thought about that before. The only time I've been in Barton overnight was when I stayed over at your house, and I don't think I got a chance to really see the sky."

She placed her fruit down, scratching her cheek in thought.

"I guess it probably is, but does it really matter? It's still the same sky."

"One sky..." he said a bit idly, popping another raisin into his mouth.

That's right... That night Mayu stayed over, it was stormy. There was no way to see the stars that night. This gave Demare a bit of an idea.

"I don't know that there would be time tonight, but... how about the next time we get together, we'll go out by the forest near my house. The sky is really clear over there, and sometimes it's like you can see all the way across the galaxy!"

The idea was perfect! It would even be... romantic. Maybe even a date.

"That's right, we're both under one sky," Mayu smiled gently, "and we always will be."

She took a sip from her cup of iced tea, humming a little tune without even realizing it. It took her a moment to realize the familiar tune in her ears was coming from herself, and she blushed as she recognized it as the song that she had been humming at their first meeting.

"That sounds... lovely," the child replied, nodding to show approval of his idea. "Across the galaxy, huh?"

Mayu hadn't seen a clear sky in the longest time, having moved from Barton long ago when she was still a baby. Stargazing in Durem was near-impossible due to the light pollution, so the Legend had never gotten a chance to see a truly clear night sky aside from photographs in books and on the internet.

"I just wish we could see it tonight instead," she mumbled quietly, poking at her fruit with her fork. "It must be beautiful, with all of these fireflies flying around."

Demare sipped at his cup in thought, his eyes turning away. It was getting late, and he didn't want to make anyone angry by bringing Mayu home too late, muchless deal with anything Neko might say to him. Perhaps he could...

Yes... That would provide enough time to get there, come back, and maybe even still have time to go to a restraunt like the girl wanted. However, it was simply a matter of getting there and back without scaring her or Demian spotting them.

"Well, there might be a way..." he said a bit nonchalantly. "Do you trust me?"

Mayu gave a nod in reply, reaching over to grab the bag of snacks she had purchased earlier.

"Are we going anywhere?" she asked, already preparing to stand up as she clutched the bag at her side, packing away the food she had already opened to save for later. It was perhaps a silly question, she knew that a walk to Barton would be long, and they couldn't possibly shut down all of the lights in Durem so that they could see the stars.

So... what could it be? Mayu's face gave a puzzled expression as she thought, wondering where they could possibly go in order to see the stars like Demare had described.

Carefully, the halfling managed to stand, ignoring how sore his body was. He looked around for a moment, noticing a tree near by. Perfect... the shadow cast from that should be wide enough for the both of them.

"We could walk through the shadows, and cut the time it takes to get there considerably. It would probably take about 5 minutes tops," he explained, stepping toward the tree. "If we're quick, we can come and go without anyone noticing..."

"Do you need any help?" Mayu asked, not expecting him to be up so quickly. She moved closer to his side so that he could lean on her for support if he wanted to, and followed quickly after when he began to move towards the tree.

"Walk through the shadows..." she mumbled, echoing his words. "Is that... safe?" She managed a nervous smile as she looked over to Demare, quite unsure of the possible harms of what he had just said. It sounded simple and harmless enough, but one could never be too sure.
PostPosted: Thu Jan 18, 2007 7:40 pm

"I'll... I'll be okay," he assured her with a smile. "And it's... safe enough. Should we get caught, I'll just use my light to escape. Should that happen, though, I'm not fully sure where we'll be... Closer to the destination, but I don't know by how much."

After a moment, he lightly took hold of her hand. It was easy to get through the shadows, but if one of the shadow beasts caught sight of Mayu, they could wreck havoc. More than likely, Demian would hear about this later, but so long as she wasn't there, he wouldn't care.

"Just stay with me, and everything will be fine."

"Okay," Mayu nodded, returning the smile. She cluched her bag tightly to one side, not wanting to lose any of the semi-expensive contents. She gripped Demare's hand firmly to make sure she would not be separated from him as she had almost been in the crowd earlier in the day, a silent response to his instructions.

"I'm ready," the child said, swinging her arm back and forth slightly as she watched the leaves sway gently in the breeze. In actuality, she was quite unsure about this, even with Demare's assurance. But... she did so want to see the stars as he had described.
