Sessrumnir, Knight of Jupiter

They hadn’t managed to save purify Faustite. Ganymede was being thrown across the park at Cybele. Lysithea was using her magic and the Negaverse were leaving.

Aquamarine hadn’t gone to Jet’s aid, which had been the intention of approaching the General in the first place, but Sessrumnir wasn’t sure how much his own presence deterred Aquamarine, or if everything else going on was enough to distract him.

Sessrumnir crossed his arms over his chest now that everyone was clearing out. The Court seemed to be leaving with Michel. Others were deciding where they wanted to go. He spared a glance over his shoulder at Alastor. With all the fighting the Negaverse was doing amongst themselves, they hadn’t really been needed, apparently.

“Are you okay?” he asked Ganymede and Cybele as he approached them, still keeping his hand around the fang and staying alert, but… the danger was momentarily passed.

They’d been lucky. This time.

“We can get the boys, unless you’re okay with them staying over?” he asked Ganymede, his voice low so it wouldn’t carry to more than Alastor and Cybelle, not wanting to alert others. That had been the plan, but everything seemed a bit anticlimactic. Maybe Paris would just want to sit back and drink after all this. Not that his mother couldn’t keep an eye on everyone while she did so.

Eternal Sailor Varuna

Varuna stayed by Lysithea’s side as she had been this whole time, making sure Michel didn’t jostle her arm too much. But he seemed to have a handle on things. And was stronger than she was anyway.

Malus and Adria were sweet and kind to Ida when she offered to help. She didn’t reprimand Michel for snapping. Besides, she didn’t know him well enough. And part of her agreed. She didn’t know Ida, despite having seen her around over the years, despite her introducing herself and seeming like she was being sincerely friendly and wanting to help.

Varuna kept her focus on Lysithea. Ida wasn’t addressing her, so she kept out of the conversation between Ida and Malus and Adria. She was used to being invisible -- it was better this way. Safer. Lonely, but safer. She didn’t have anything to say anyway.

“We should go,” she said quietly to her friends and Michel, keeping her focus on Lysithea.

Princess to Eternal Ganymede

Ganymede kept her mouth shut.

She didn’t know how to say what she wanted without sadness and frustration making her seem short tempered, without putting herself into a position she never wanted, didn’t think herself suited for — to guide, or lead, or whatever anyone who looked to her for answers expected her to do.

The loss of Faustite came as no disappointment to her. The last she’d known of him, he’d been deeply entrenched, loyal, maybe curious, but never unfaithful to the Negaverse. Maybe he’d changed since she’d seen him last. Ganymede didn’t think so. She’d stopped believing the best in people, if she ever truly had.

It was the White Moon that left her disillusioned. That had always been the case, ever since her first stumbling attempts to understand what had become of her after she awakened. Back then, she’d wanted no part in the war. She found her place anyway, but it hadn’t truly made anything easier. The flaws only became more glaring — her own, and those of others. Her goals expanded, but her allies, or those who were supposed to be her allies, either didn’t share them or didn’t seem as earnest in achieving them.

The war was not kind. It was not fair. It didn’t care how powerful someone was, or how good. Inaction cost lives. Too much hope clouded their judgment. Hope and trust were too often misplaced.

The White Moon brought about its own failures.

Ganymede said none of that. She only squeezed Cybele tighter and said, “Of course.”

Over Cybele’s shoulder, Ganymede watched Sessrumnir approach, staring grimly.

“I’m fine,” she said. A bit winded, maybe, and she ached from taking Jet’s weight, but it was nothing that wouldn’t ease in a day or two.

Whatever the Negaverse’s plan had been, Faustite was their ultimate goal. Jet could’ve laid waste to everyone, if he’d wanted. He didn’t. Ganymede wasn’t arrogant enough to assume he’d been too distracted by her.

“You can leave the boys,” she added. “No point waking them up at this time of night.”

Finally, Ganymede loosened her hold on Cybele. She eased back and resumed her Eternal form, holding eye contact with Sessrumnir as she did so. Then her gaze shifted to Alastor; she tried to smile appreciatively, tried to seem even remotely optimistic, the way she should have been when they’d helped him rid the Chaos from his world.

She couldn’t. She didn’t even have the will to fake it.

“Let’s go,” she told them, Cybele, Sessrumnir, Alastor, and Lucasta, then, “Thank you for being here, regardless of how things turned out. Things could’ve been much worse.”

The others were dispersing — some to tend to their injured, some to seek solace in the company of their friends. Michel and the Court would take care of Lysithea. Ganymede would’ve liked a moment with her cousin, but she didn’t want to stall them. She could text Rhiannon once they were all home, once they were safe. Ganymede looked in that direction anyway, to reassure herself.

The Court had weathered most of the damage, and faced the most danger. They would’ve been the primary target, whether the Negaverse had been trying to stop the purification or sabotage their efforts once it was over.

Saving and protecting Faustite shouldn’t have been the concern of the White Moon.

Saving and protecting the Court was.

Ganymede breathed through the ache in her chest. As they turned to take their leave, she wondered, would they be better prepared next time?
