In, in again, press harder, try not to get hit again--oh nevermind there it was--well keep going and...!
Hey! He hit! Alright!
When the two of them broke apart, there was a fresh cut across his copy's face, almost mirroring the same cut across his own nose. He couldn't help a grin at this symmetry, though he had to remind himself again that one more success, two total of the however many he'd tried so far, was not victory. He was breathing harder himself, feeling the ache set in his arms and across his shoulders. He wasn't exactly incompetent with his sword, but he wasn't far off of it, and he renewed his conviction to spend some time training. Being beat by a copy of himself would be humiliating, even if he knew the point of copies was to make them evenly matched. Still, though. The rate of damage was starting to equal out and Arrakis wasn't terribly pleased with that.
Only one way to fix that, though, and that was to get through this and then spend a lot of free time doing drills. Light hits were still hits, though, and he was going to have to work on his agility, too. It didn't matter how hard someone hit if they couldn't hit, right? That was kind of his problem right now, wasn't it? Exactly. Alright, now if he could just get another hit in...

That was precisely the opposite of getting another hit in, and Arrakis jumped and swore when the return strike caught him across the backs of his thighs. His panting was coming harder now, though still manageable. Tossing his head to get his hair out of his eyes, Arrakis shifted his grip on his weapon. It was fortunate that his dominant arm had still so far escaped injury, but that wasn't going to continue if he didn't figure out what he was doing, and fast. His copy was going to win by a hundred smaller blows if Arrakis didn't get some larger ones in.
He resisted the impulse to charge in, having the feeling that a headlong rush was neither his strength nor in his best interest. Though, honestly, his instinct hadn't been serving him very well this whole time, so how valuable was it, really? Arrakis wasn't ready, quite yet anyway, to discard it entirely. This had to turn around at some time, right? It wasn't like he was up against someone with more experience and training than he had. Okay, one step at a time, let's try that one more time...

So close! His renewed determination was working, and Arrakis took gratification in the feeling of their weapons colliding again. A near-miss was better than a total miss, and he found he didn't mind the retaliation blow as much this time as he had previously. Any progress was good progress, and he was going to get this under control. Absolutely he was going to get this under control. This was his fight to win, and he was going to win it. The only thing in his way was, well, himself.
Ignoring the philosophical implications of that thought, Arrakis pulled back and looked to either side of his copy. Which way had he tended to go? Instead of guessing what he, himself, would do, would it help to think about in terms of patterns? Of what he, "himself", had already done? These small, repeated blows seemed to be working pretty well for the other him. He still had time if he wanted to try some of that himself, so no time like the present! Arrakis feinted left and then went in, this time looking for any kind of hit--not necessarily a crippling one.

He took encouragement from this near hit, too. So close! Just one more! Even if now he was looking almost as worse for the wear as his copy, he still had a chance to get this under control. It wasn't over until it was over, and it wasn't over. Not quite yet, anyway. His breathing was certainly no longer evenly controlled, but at least he wasn't gasping for breath yet, right? There was less circling each other, now, and more shifting weight from foot to foot while they watched one another.
The cut on his nose was starting to itch something terrible and he gave into the impulse to rub at it. That was when his doppelganger made his own move, coming in during Arrakis' brief moment of distraction. Arrakis jumped back out of the way, but not in enough time to keep himself from getting another cut across his arm--this time, his dominant arm. Yet again, something not entirely polite slipped out of his mouth. Was it offending his copy, he wondered? Did it actually matter if it did? Could his copy be offended?
No, the existential questions could happen later, once he was done with this.

Aha! That was something! That was a fairly solid blow, if he did say so himself! Alright, it wasn't the one more he'd been--perhaps over optimistically--hoping for, but it was that much closer to him winning this bout. It had taken quite a bit of time, but now he was making headway, and he couldn't help but be emboldened by this. If anything, the fact that the match was getting pretty close between them was actually even more exciting to him than if he'd managed a quick victory (somehow). If he was going to win this--wait, no, when--then it was going to be something he could at least be proud of to himself.
There was a certain allure to a quick victory, but also to one he had to work for. He'd learn more from one he had to actually work for, right? He had to be honest with himself--if he'd won quickly, it would have been luck and nothing to do with skill. In the long run, wasn't skill more valuable than luck? Alright, he was so close to winning that he could taste it. If he could just get a couple more hits in... If he could just manage a couple more, then he could limp out with pride. Renewed by this, he struck again.

This one also made it, albeit lightly. The strike dealt to him did more damage than the one he dealt, but it was still better than the repeated resounding nothings he had been accomplishing, so he'd take it if he had to be frank. It was still something, and his doppelganger looked about ready to fall over any moment. He wondered briefly if pushing himself over would accomplish anything, but decided it wasn't a good idea to get within striking distance if he wasn't intending to try to actually hit the other him.
...As funny as it would admittedly be to push himself over and have that actually help his case...
No, he was going to win this honestly, and that included not trying to get around things by pushing himself over.
...Okay, it was still funny, the thought of pushing himself over. It seemed like he'd gone from existential musings to random mental babbling; he needed a nap. Well, he couldn't nap here. That left only one thing to do--then he'd be able to get a snack, a shower, and a nap.

He went in for what he'd hoped would be a final blow against the other him... and actually stumbled. Whether from tiredness or lack of forethought, Arrakis' strike went wide and bit into much more air than it did the copy of himself. He had no one to blame but himself for feeling a retaliatory blow strike across his back again. It put a bit of a damper on his resolve, especially since they both had to stop and catch their breath, his coming a bit harder and faster than he would have honestly liked. That shower and snack was starting to sound really good right about then.
Alright, it was coming down to the wire and, if he wanted to walk out of this with his pride intact, he was going to have to get himself together. He really only had one more chance. Both he and his doppelganger met eyes, each trying to catch their breath, before they both--clearly operating on the same page for the first time--came for each other at once.

Arrakis' HP: 4 - 2= 2 Doppelganger's HP: 2 - 5 = -3Damage this turn: 5 Turn Count: 14/15 When the two of them came together at once, Arrakis was honestly expecting to get the worse end of it--it was simply how things had been going so far. He'd still be standing, but barely, and would probably only be able to manage one more try before he'd have to throw in the towel. To his delight, that was not the case. Bringing his weapon around to bear, he felt the cut to his dominant arm again as he came down with the blade. It caused him to flinch, but momentum by that point already had enough force to carry him into the successful strike he needed to secure the win for himself. It wasn't the strongest strike he'd managed, but strength wasn't everything--it was strong enough and that was all that mattered. Now he could indeed limp out and go take a bath. After that, some food and some good reading. Assuming there wasn't anything else to do, of course. He hardly wanted to go home early! Arrakis wondered if some of the other students he'd come to vaguely recognise by this point were nearby. Quote: Student Name: Arrakis Dismth Number of Turns it Took to Win: 14 Did you remember to subtract your strength stat from your doppelganger's initial HP? Y Remember: If you haven't used your luck, this is your last chance! Used!
