Theron crouched to study the fine hair, gingerly picking it up between two fingers to feel the texture. At least he was on the right track. Stormstruck stamped a hoof by his side, impatient to get back to the hunt, and he obliged, heading off in the direction the creature had been going.

An embarrassing yelp left Frances' lips when a snapped branch could be heard in the distance. She was at once grateful to be alone, yet anxious to find herself in this predicament without some form of protection. Tentatively, she called again for the hound she'd come here for and, after a pause, headed towards the source of the sound that had so startled her. Something had to be breaking these branches, after all -- she only hoped it wasn't anything dangerous.

Soibhan stared at the rabbits with a slight feeling of unease, their eyes like soulless pits. Of the few rabbits she'd seen from the wardwood, these seemed the creepiest, but that could have been just her mood and the atmosphere of the forest. She opened her mouth to shoo them, but they all started hopping around the circle of mushrooms again as if dismissing her, and she took the opportunity to dart away, back on the hunt for whatever was making the prints.

~Twilight...Angel~

The forest is quiet; by now most of the birds have migrated south, and the only sounds you've heard for the past several minutes are the rustling of the breeze in the trees, the plop of acorns falling, the quiet scraping rustle as a leaf descends to the forest floor, and the occasional rasp of a squirrel gnawing on a nut's shell in the distance. It is peaceful — or, depending on your character's preferences, a little eerie.

The shrill, almost-human scream of a rabbit's death cry shatters the silence. Once you've taken a moment to recover (or, if you're a badass mofo, coolly evaluate the situation) you head in the scream's direction. It could be the work of a hawk, but there's still a good chance a fox is nearby.

You win three points this turn.

Eauo

You spy a splash of blood on a single yellow leaf on the ground. When you examine it, the blood looks fresh. Strangely there are no trees in the area with such distinctly golden foliage, but this is still excellent evidence of an animal's trail… isn't it?

After some time of continued searching, however, you are forced to come to the conclusion that you've been waylaid by a prankster — or an unnaturally clever fox.

You lose two points this turn.

Mist began rising from the damp forest floor not too long ago; now it's all around you, muting the autumn colors behind a ghostly bluish veil. You can still see well enough to stick to the path you've chosen, but as you walk or ride on you begin to catch glimpses of something white showing through the sparse yellow leaves of a buckthorn hedge.

You investigate.

Unfortunately it is only the skeleton of a large stag, stripped of flesh but otherwise almost perfectly intact; time has bleached its bones to the stark paleness that distracted you. A single wild rose has grown up through one of its eye sockets.

You do not win or lose any points this turn.

Her first reaction was to recoil from the bones, but after the initial shock, Kristine began to notice that it was also beautiful. Clearly, this meant something, but she wasn't quite sure what. It must have been a sign or omen, but she probably wouldn't know how to decipher it until later. She pondered taking the rose, but thought better of it.

Maybe this was how she needed to view the woods, horrible and beautiful at the same time. She had to admit, she was warming up a little to being here. She was certainly still jumpy, but it was lessening. She wasn't sure she'd ever really like it here, but she could at least not hate it.

Still pressing toward the direction the fox went, Kristine left the skeleton and continued on.

A broken twig lies in your path. Bending down to retrieve it, you notice that it has a faint spicy scent and the inside of the wood is green and pliable. Something has passed through here recently.

You stop to examine a leafless buckthorn shrub covered in eggplant-colored berries. Some of its lower branches have been bent and broken, but these branches appear to have been dead for a long time, so there's no telling when the event occurred. This is poor evidence of an animal's trail, but it's better than nothing.

You win one point this turn.

You may choose to either take a rabbit or walk away with two points. Please quote me with your decision! If you choose a rabbit, provide your order of preference (omitting any you aren't interested in). Kristine saw something in the brush stir. Could this be the fox? No, it was too small, and it seemed more docile and friendly than a predator like a fox. She followed anyway, and pushed though to the clearing.

What? Kristine stopped dead in her tracks. The rabbits where staring at her the same way as the first animal she saw that began this journey. It must have never been a fox; it must have been one of the rabbits leading her here all along.

They were... strange. She approached cautiously, but they didn't run from her. They just kept staring. She bent over, and her reached her hand out to pet one, and every set of eyes tracked her in unsettling unison. Her hand settled on the black and white one. It broke it's gaze and hopped up to her. Kristine picked it up, and then moved to stand again.

The rest of the rabbits scattered, and she watched them run while scratching behind her rabbit's ears. Her rabbit. Strange thought that this little creature led her all the way out here just to be carried back to her house.

((OOC: I'll take rabbit number one, please! It was a hard choice because I was really enjoying the game, but the bunnies are too cute! whee Thank you!))

((Excellent, post in certing whenever you're ready! You can also keep playing if you want — the only restriction is that you can't win more than one of each type of pet, so you can still win a fox and hawk.))

Quote:

You have reached a creek. Its narrow length is lined with rocks and moss, and bright autumn leaves meander downstream, turning languidly in the current. As you draw nearer you notice faint markings in the mud between two rocks: fox prints, almost entirely worn away by time. They aren't recent, but knowing the animal's preferred path is still somewhat useful.

You win one point this turn.

Worn, but still readable, it was confirmation at least that he was right on the money. The creek looked too wet for his own liking so he made a hurried, but not harried exit

They walked on for a while before Lucterius held a hand out in front of poor Gareth. The boy stopped, and Lucterius gestured at a small leafless shrub. Did it have...broken branches? The boy bent to examine them and stood up again, shrugging. "They're not wet," he said. That could've meant anything - they were clearly not newly dead, though. Were they headed in the wrong direction? It was clear something had passed through here at some time - but there was no telling what had. And yet the branches had not yet begun to grow back...

Well, if they were not following a fox, they were tracking a clever animal indeed. Lucterius shrugged. "Let's turn there; the bush is recently-disturbed." And a truly tricky animal would not travel in a straight path, of course...

"I agree, sir," said Gareth, the quiver nearly gone from his voice. He headed off ahead of Lucterius with hardly a glance behind. Yes, now the hunt had begun in earnest...

She paused again to observe the faint trail lying before her. It wasn't fresh, but it had the well-worn look of a path often traveled, now or once before. It was something.

"Allez," she said, pressing the mare forward. This was progress, even if not much, and she would take it.
