Skittering out in front of the others, she kicked up her feet in an effort to gain more of a lead, using her smaller frame to her advantage.

Sliding in the dirt, she nearly stumbled and fell, cursing as she saw tails fly by her. That very well could've cost her everything right there. Indignant, she pushed forward.

Missing her footing entirely, the doe took a hard tumble and spit out the dirt that had lodged itself in her mouth. Scuffed and her pride severely bruised, the doe sniffed and walked away. This was pointless anyway. If she made runner she'd never find a good mate and make beautiful kittens.
At least, that's what she told herself as she sulked away, trying to hold her head high even though her ears lay flat in embarrassment and shame.

Sugar was attentive as the Owsla female spoke. Oh how she looked up to that big fluffy female. She made sure she listened and noted everything before digging her feet into the ground and turning to spring towards the starting line.

Sugar sat stilled at the starting line, waiting for the go. Her body low to the ground and hunched up like a spring or a coil ready to burst forth at any moment. One wouldn't think that there was speed in that little rabbit, that there was the drive to do anything. She had shown no want for anything before now.

She sprung forth, using her back legs as powerful propellers. She was off, racing low to the ground, ears firmly back against her head and her feet were nothing but a massive jumble of movement. It was hard to make out which blur was which foot.

Sugar felt something in her back leg give a bit and a sharp yelp rose from her. She would not stop though, she would run herself into the ground if she had to, but she would finish this race.

Oxlip tried to pretend not to care how he did in the races, but he hoped to be among the faster rabbits. His white pelt was a big handicap since it made him very visible and he took pride in making up for it with speed and agility. He usually did okay when he raced others for fun, but this time there was some added pressure. If one of them managed to catch the owsla's eye they might actually be promoted to runner!
