The State of Tennessee
Andrew S. Hickory

Tennessee felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end at the look the Californian had fixed them with. Though it only lingered for a few seconds, it felt like ages and he distinctly got the impression that they might unwittingly be in the line of fire. He had to wonder what sort of trouble Florida and Georgia had caused. Perhaps leaving those two together had been a bad idea. It normally was, but it was normally a bad idea because they fought with each other rather than someone else. Maybe they broke something important?

Well, no sense in pressing the issue now if ever.

"That's alright," he said politely. "I'm not too big of a wine drinker myself. What time do you want me to come over an' help you clean up?" Getting out of the irate Golden Boy's hair as soon as possible might be the best plan and come back later once everything had cooled down. "I don't mind stayin' to help now, if you want, but you look like you could use a moment alone is all."

Landon shook his head. "Better to help now than later. I'll forget. And I think you should take the wine, anyway... I don't think Charlotte has tried it yet. Nothing tastes better than Napa wine, after all!" He tried to crack a smile at that, but his heart just wasn't in it tonight.

"Anyway, it would be nice to work alongside someone less... dramatic," he added. "A good change of pace." Without waiting to see if the other would comply, California turned and began gathering up the scattered food and paper from the dorm floor. Gran followed almost solemnly, as if he could read his master's mind and know the state of distress he was in right now.

Even the simple task of cleaning house hurt right now. For every scrap Landon picked up reminded him of the tatters that now remained of his and Rutilio's easy bond.

It had all started with a Georgian...

Andrew hesitated when California pointed out that Charlotte might like a bottle and, if she didn't, then it might be something Seychelles would like. She was French--or something like French--after all. Tennessee finally nodded after a moment of consideration. "That's awful nice of you," he said before glancing at the others. "Well, you heard him. If you ain't gonna help clean up, then go on back to your rooms."

The Volunteer then set to work picking up discarded cups and bottles of any drinks that had been consumed. The party hadn't gotten too big so it didn't look to be a big job, but it was rude to leave all the clean up to the host who had been gracious enough to let them stay in the first place. Besides, California didn't seem to be feeling well.

Which was probably a gross understatement.

While they worked, Andrew didn't press for details about what happened. He wasn't a nosy person and preferred to keep to himself for the most part, but he was also a good listener and willing to hear California out if he had anything to say. The closest he came to talking about what he had seen was when he made one statement:

"Don't mind George for talkin' bad 'bout the Beach Boys," he said. "I still like 'em just fine myself."

Landon paused in his cleaning just long enough to give Andrew a tired smile. It was the most pathetic smile the normally happy state had ever given, but at least it was a real smile. "Thanks, bro," he whispered in a barely audible tone. "That means a lot to me. But that's not what Georgia did to get himself thrown out." Nay, all Georgia had done to get thrown out was steal his best friend from him. But how was California to say that when no one save him knew that Florida and Georgia, the eternal rivals, were now a couple?

They worked together in silence for a while until Tennessee's statement sunk in. On an impulse, Landon blurted, "Andy... What do you think of my movies about you? Honestly." He wasn't entirely sure if he'd like the answer, but Georgia's and Florida's reactions to his now depressingly dead project had unnerved him. Landon had to know.

Andrew was surprised by the question and took a moment to think them over. It was no secret he wasn't always pleased by the movies about him, but what did he think about being featured in Landon's films as a whole?

"... It depends on the movie," he finally concluded. "Sometimes they're fine an' sometimes they're... not very flattering. It'd be nice if they weren't always 'bout country singers, simple folks on farms or in small towns. Farms are great an' all but it makes people call me a hill billy even more than they already do even though I got quite a few industrial cities myself..." He paused and glanced over at California with a small smile. "I suppose it don't matter too much, though. The movies just reinforce what folks already assume 'bout me an' I ain't got nothin' to prove to 'em anyway. 'Sides, it's always excitin' when you and your people come over to film with all your equipment. I don't always like the product, but I like watchin' you work. You're a good story teller an' I think that Johnny Cash woulda been happy with that film you did on him a few years back."

He wrinkled his nose. "But I got a thing or two to tell that Billy Ray Cyrus 'bout the movie he an' his daughter put out there," he grumbled. "Honestly, that man was a Tennessean at one point an' he signed off on all that ridiculousness. His mama raised him better than that."

Massachusetts greeted TN with smile. "Bonjour Fluffy~" she said, she was very cheerfulll today since she had gotten her arm fixed. She also spent most of the school day at her dorm.

When CA Fl and GA came by Massy just stood there for a moment. Tehn LAndon gave him and FLuffy a mean lo ok, it cause MAssachusetts to hide behind Andrew. Which was uncommon for her.

She stood there watch the two clean up, she felt a bit odd just stadning there, and didn't want to leave when her brother was feeling down. So She just decied to help clean up.

It was sad to see two with such a bond fight like this- it even made her a little thankful for the often annoying brothers she had. Although it had been suggested they leave she got to work on helping cleaning up the mess as well. Although what Landon had done seemed so wrong in her eyes, especially for the sake of media, she couldn't help but pity him a little.

Landon smiled again as Andrew gave him almost exactly the answer he had expected. His smile even widened into a close semblance of its old self when he saw Leah and Diana pitch in as well. "Thanks for helping, Leah, Diana," he told them in a slightly more upbeat tone. It was getting a little easier to smile now that the source of his pain had been ejected from the room.

"Hillbilly?" he repeated, a teasing grin on his face. "Yeah, I suppose I haven't done too great a job of showcasing your industries. But Hollywood is Hollywood--one doesn't profit by filming the same old boring truth." Almost every bestseller he made was, to some degree, sensationalist.

The Westerner chuckled as Tennessee railed against Billy Ray Cyrus for helping his daughter ruin herself in her own movie. "Even I can't account for everything those two did." He knew that Hollywood, like dictatorship, was corrupting, but what it had done to Miley amazed even him.

His younger sibling concluded by saying he didn't entirely like the stereotypes Landon thrived on, but that he always enjoyed it when he came over to film. The last part in particular heartened California, and certainly played no small part in cheering him up at last.

"You're a good maid. I should hire you more often," he joked, slapping Andrew merrily on the back. He picked up the last of the trash and stuffed it in a bag, which the curious Gran took with him to the waste basket. That done, Landon flopped backwards onto his bed and slid his hand behind his head. His expression was solemn, thoughtful.

Well. This party had been interesting, to say the least. He hadn't expected to find such a powerful affection between Georgia and Florida. It still hurt that the whole thing had happened under his nose, as it was. His mind still refused to acknowledge the reality and it was still unwilling to recognize the two states by name. True, the rapport California and Florida had had always been more brotherly than romantic, but he had always imagined that they would stay bachelors forever, always poking fun at others without ever taking things seriously. Now that Florida was in effect a married man, he would be spending less time with his favorite bro. The thought of spending less time with his old mentor and best friend stung, but it was already hurting less than it had minutes ago.

For that, Landon appreciated Andrew's willingness to help him and listen. He wouldn't mind at all if Tennessee stayed--he would provide an unbiased ear to vent to, as will as a chance to blackmail Florida and Georgia--but nor would he mind if Andrew had places to go. He could always think it over himself, but a second opinion was more often beneficial than not.

"Well, the music industry ain't been doin' too much better 'bout that sorta thing..." Tennessee admitted when Landon pointed out how Hollywood liked to sensationalize its films. Andrew would be lying if he said that didn't happen in Nashville and Memphis, too, where the music sometimes became second to the glam of rising stars. It was a bit depressing to think about all of those who had sold themselves out for fame. Even so he supposed he couldn't exactly condemn them for their choices so long as they weren't hurting anyone else. "I don't like it, but I can understand it."

Andrew's cheeks flushed when he felt the slap on his back as Landon declared him a skilled maid. The easily flustered young man hoped he really was joking about that! The only maids that came to mind for him were the sort who walked around in neat little dresses with aprons and funny looking hats. "I-I'm just used to helpin' 'round at my neighbors' houses when they have trouble sometimes is all..." the Volunteer mumbled shyly. "Ain't got nothin' to do with maids." He blushed more at the thought of himself--or anyone for that matter--running around in one of those get ups.

Landon snapped out of his contemplation when Andrew agreed with his assessment, commenting that music these days wasn't too good at staying away from sensation. He had forgotten that Nashville and Memphis did that, since both cities belonged to such a polite state.

California grinned at Tennessee's consternation over the maid joke. "T'was a joke, Drew, no more," he replied. "But seriously..." He sat up and stroked his chin while staring thoughtfully at his bro for a few moments while his sibling looked increasingly flustered before a laugh sputtered out and he collapsed back on the bed, his pent-up stress releasing itself in one long giggle-fest.

When the laughter finally subsided, Landon rolled over and faced Andrew, wiping the tears from his eyes. "S-sorry," he stuttered through heaving lungs. "It's just... You take everything so seriously sometimes; it's funny!" He dissolved into laughter again. When he stood up again, the Westerner looked just as happy as he had before the fight had broken out.

"Thanks for cheering me up," he said. "You really made my day... or night, as it is," he corrected, noting the color of the sky.

Andrew started to relax when Landon first informed him he was just joking until he saw that thoughtful stare and the way he stroked his chin as if he was envisioning something. The shy state seemed to both pale and flush simultaneously as he began to internally panic at the thought of California potentially trying to get him into a maid costume for some reason. H-He wouldn't really do that, r-right?

Probably... Tennessee had been asked to do crazier things by saner people.

When the Golden State began to laugh, he remained confused and startled for a few moments more until the blond pointed out how seriously he took some things. W-Was it really funny? Andrew was hesitant for a moment as he thought over it before chuckling lightly. Despite himself, he really did like humor, pranks and jokes. It wasn't too hard to get him to see the humor in most anything.

"You don't have to thank me for nothin' at all," Tennessee said with a modest shrug. "It's just good to see you back in a better mood. Don't seem natural for you to be all upset, you know?"

Landon sobered up at the reminder of his state of mind just minutes ago. "Yes, I do have to thank you," he said. "I haven't exactly been the most grateful bro ever, but you have no idea how much it helped, you being serious enough to make me laugh... That was just what I needed, after seeing that. That was just..." His hands clenched into fists momentarily, scrunching those areas of blanket up into two small balls, before loosening themselves slowly as if the position was too hard to let go of. They matched the state of his mind, still stubbornly clinging to the past, still denying what he had seen suddenly--at least from his point of view--happen between Florida and Georgia. It didn't help that he was beginning to see the blame he bore for even considering such a move... Wasn't that the reason why he avoided directing movies based on his siblings' personal lives? But he had honestly thought that this time, it would be far enough removed from the reality as to make comparison impossible. Of course, Georgia and Florida were also to blame; the former had viciously punched him, forced an end to the project, and stolen his best friend, while the latter had dared to side with his former enemy against Landon.

Mulling over the problem made it just a little bit easier to stomach, though.

The Westerner sighed and stood up to feed Gran, who had been pawing insistently at his pants leg for some time. "Some things just don't look like they should ever be possible..." he murmured, cutting open the packet of sardines for the irascible little bear cub.

Andrew blinked and wondered just what Georgia and Florida had done to upset someone like Landon so much. He never had seemed like a person who would be easily shaken. Having lived with the other two Southerners all his life, he was familiar with how much trouble they could cause. Maybe to someone who wasn't used to them it might be a little shocking.

"I'm sure George and Rutilio didn't mean to offend you," he said. "They're trouble sometimes, but they don't mean no harm to anyone but each other." Usually. Once in a blue moon those two might team up together against a greater evil, but that was a rare thing to behold from what Tennessee had known about them all his life. "I figure it's better to stay out of their problems as best you can. You get used to their fightin' after a while."

Florida and Georgia only meant harm to themselves? Landon snorted. That would make his day if it were true.

"What a way to relearn to steer clear of the States," he muttered lowly, as if scolding himself for his lapse in memory. The Westerner picked up the empty wrapper that was all that remained of Gran's sardines and threw it at the trash can, grinning when it clinked inside. Then he walked over to the wine pyramid, which could more accurately now be called a wine row, and eyed it critically before selecting a bottle from the far end and handing it to Tennessee.

"Here you are, Andy. Give it to Charlotte with my regards. Or give it to a Frenchman as a Christmas present; whichever floats your boat," he said, smirking at the little joke. "Thanks for coming. And hearing me out."

He had thought to use the Tennessean to blackmail the new couple, but since Andrew shared dorms with Christian, that was inevitable already. His eyes clouded over in trepidation as he faced Andrew, wondering if he should directly involve the innocent Volunteer in his vengeance. It wasn't Tennessee's fault, so did he really deserve to be drawn in?

What had Georgia done to California, to make him question his own morality all of a sudden?

Andrew blinked in confusion when California snorted and scowled. It just didn't look right on the normally perky young man's face and once again he had to wonder just what had happened to upset him this deeply. Something about it seemed so unnaturally off and Tennessee worried maybe Georgia was drunker than he seemed to have done something so bad. Maybe it had been a mistake not to follow after his big brother when he left the dorm?

The Tennessean took the bottle that was offered to him with a soft blush when Landon suggested giving it to a Frenchman. It was more a French woman who lived just off of Africa which came to mind for him. He rubbed the back of his neck shyly and wondered if anyone had told California about him having a girlfriend now. If she was here he would of liked to introduce them, but it didn't seem like the right time to say anything given the current mood.

"Thanks," he said. "It's no problem. If there's anything else you'd like to get off your chest, I don't mind hearin' you out." He hesitated as he glanced around and took note of something that had been bothering him; neither of Landon's room mates were anywhere to be seen. Andrew wondered if it was a good idea for the Californian to be alone when he was so obviously distressed even if he did seem cheerier now. "You know... If you want, you can come spend the night in my room," he said. "Hawaii's been stayin' over, too, since she got hurt last. I think she's prob'ly goin' back to her dorm tonight since she's feelin' better, but I don't think she'd mind another sleep over if it meant catchin' up. George won't bother us none."
