Taryn tumbled over herself and over the castle to get another, better swipe in with a bit of discarded driftwood. By Jack, it was taking their castle down!!

Yin tightened his grip and then ripped out a chunk of its flesh, glowering at the tentacle. How dare it. How dare it destroy all of their hard work.

Apparently that was not the best move. The tentacle raised into the air and then flung around. With all of the oozing fluid from the kraken Yin could not keep his grip and he found himself flying through the air and crashing into...Mr. Starfish. Their mascot gave way, saving him from a potentially bone crushing fall by sacrificing its own durability.

Taryn took a header over the kraken as it took its final swipe at the sandcastle. Dead... dead... all their work. A brave leader would have stood up and claimed it wasn't over. Taryn was totally disheartened and now had a mouth full of sand. She flopped, defeated.

Mort peeled off from the wall not long after Yin did, face-firsting into the sand - utterly defeated. He didn't have to breathe either, so the zomboil stayed face down for far longer than a living creature could handle.

As for Snips, well . . . Where was the crab? He'd seemed to disappear after the final destruction of the castle, though last he was seen he was clinging to the monstrous tentacle with ungodly might. Had he been flung off? Had he been crushed?

A certain striped shell was embedded in the remnants of the castle wall, not far from where Yin's head used to be.

Chuppi was...well, devastated. The castle she had worked hard to defend had tumbled down around her, both the actions of herself and her companions not enough to stop the crazy tentacle. Even the little crab was gone, and the monster was doing her very, very best not to start sobbing. It was just a sandcastle, right?

Did....did this mean they failed the trials? Was it her fault for not hitting hard enough?

Alex didn't get an answer from Yin.

The reasonable part of him said that it was just because the weremantis hadn't heard him, or was too engrossed in battle to answer. The unreasonable part of him seemed to want him to have a sudden nervous breakdown there on the spot. His gaze was constantly sweeping the battlefield, searching for a flash of green or brown, an antennae, a clawed hand...anything. In the span of a few seconds that stretched out to feel more like hours, Alex was pushing himself up to his hands and feet and then scrambling to his feet to stumble around and look for his bonded. His legs were still a bit shaking, but the sudden boost in adrenaline seemed to take over as he made his way closer to the castle, tripping over piles of sand/rocks and nearly sprawling in the sand.

By the time he found Yin, it was only to watch him get sent flying through the air, body crashing, thankfully, into the starfish that was bloated to the point of being soft and spungy, at least, though that didn't seem to stop it from breaking up.

Alex's eyes were wide in horror, more worried about Yin then some stupid sand castle as he crawled the rest of the way to the weremantis's side.

"Yin! Are you hurt??" He asked, reaching out to attempt to help the other boil up into a sitting position at least.

Well that was...not fun. He concentrated, trying to see if there were any injuries he should worry about before moving. While he felt sore and the spines of the starfish were digging into his flesh just a little bit, nothing seemed too extreme. It was a rather lucky fall really, he had certainly gotten worse from lesser falls. He did perk up slightly as a familiar voice reached his voice and he looked up to see Alexander crawling toward him.

Yin propped himself up on his elbows to look at the zomboil and tried not to groan. "I am fine Alexander," he said quickly, noting the look on the zomboil's face. He glanced down a bit ruefully. "I am sorry that I could not do more." But he had managed to destroy their mascot, Mr. Starfish. He reached out to grab on to Alexander's hand using him to pull himself the rest of the way into a sitting position. "Have you seen the others? Is everyone alright?"

Taryn got up grudgingly and looked down the beach. They weren't the only team to see all-out destruction... but had they failed? Was this it? She pulled herself up out of the sand and surveyed her own team, noting that Alex and Yin seemed to be faring well. She plucked Snips from the sand on her way to Mort, who she tried to tug up by his shirt. As she worked on removing the not-breather from not-suffocating, she turned to Chuppi.

"Are you alright?"

Mort was like deadweight until he coughed up a bit of sand and managed to get himself into a kneeling position, aided by Taryn's shirt-tugging. "Graaaa . . ." He wiped at his face with the back of his hand, forcing the sand out; his glasses were damaged, but it could've been worse. "All hard work . . . n' calamari takes down."

Snips, rescued and in the palm of the chimera's hand, peeked out tentatively to view the damage. It appeared that his shell had taken the brunt of damage, leaving the crab shaken but otherwise alright.

Alex's relief at finding Yin safe and mostly unharmed washed over him, making the tension in his body float away as he sagged forward. "I'm so glad you're alright." He grunted as he pulled Yin up, struggling not to lose his balance and fall into the weremantis. Stupid un-stable sand!

Oh, wait, everyone else? Alex had been too worried about Yin to even think about the others. He felt slightly ashamed so he quickly scanned the ground. "Taryn looks to be in pretty good shape. Mort...Mort'll live..or not..well, you know what I mean! and Taryns helping him up anyways." Was Chuppi okay? Alex had no idea. This whole ordeal had just been so overwhelming, and he had just spent the last few minutes worried that something horrible had happened to his bonded and now he found him and he was fine and..and..

Alex let go of Yin's hand, and then threw his arms around the other boil in and embrace. Jack be damned if anybody was watching, Alex didn't care. And he wouldn't care if Yin pushed him off, because he was doing this, he needed to do this to assure himself that they were both alright, that they had both survived.

When he let go, he blinked around. Everything was normal sized again! He grinned happily at Yin before pushing himself to his feet, the hot sun beating down on him once more. He glanced down to the once strong and mighty sand castle and grimaced. It had actually looked a lot less...pitiful...when they had been shrunk.

"Well..I guess this means we lost?" He wrinkled his nose a little at that. They had worked so damned hard!

Alexander thought the other's sounded good, though he had not mentioned Mademoiselle Temes. Yin was starting to look around for her, about to rise, when Alexander seemed to forget one very important detail about mantodae.

They needed to breath.

The breath whooshed out of him and he decided right then and there while he still had the oxygen to do so that someone should teach the zomboil how to hug without risking bruised and cracked ribs. His face flushed but they were hidden in the sand dunes and he tried to wait several full seconds before trying to pull back slightly. To occupy those several seconds he managed to whisper into the zomboil's ear with the small bit of air still trapped in his lungs. I am glad that you are safe Alexander."

Apparently Alexander had magical hugs because when he was released and he finally managed to draw a proper breath again he noticed that everything was back to his normal size.

Which meant that the sand dunes had at some point ceased hiding them. Distressed and distracted he nodded. "I believe so," he said, voice oddly nervous. "Oh look at the time. We had better go check up on the rest of the team."

Chuppi turned and looked at everyone as they gathered together, her eyes watering despite all her efforts not to sob like a baby and ruin the moment. She was unhappy, she didn't like seeing all their work go to waste, and she shuffled over towards the rest of them with as much rubbing of her eyes and self-control as she could muster.

"I am....of the so so so so so so sorry. I did not protect the castle, is my fault for it. I am sorry, we have lost, it's my fault. If I had been stronger, the castle..."

And then she started to cry. Thankfully her tears were silent, no loud sobs coming in to ruin the day and make everyone sick, but it was evident that she was quite upset.

Alex's hugs were absolutely magical. Yin was lucky they weren't both sparkling at that moment.

Now that they were full sized again, and Alex had let the weremantis go, allowing him a chance to breathe once more, Alex took a more serious look around at the rest of the team. Everyone appeared to be okay, for the most part, anyways. And even Chuppi was approaching now, though she looked really really upset.

Oh...

Oh no...

Crying. She was crying. Alex, being the giant zombie who forgot to stop growing that he was, stepped so that he was blocking Chuppi from Yin's line of sight. If he saw her crying, he was just going to blame himself, and then this would turn into a giant blame fest of depression. They should all just be happy that they survived, and that it was over, in his opinion.

"It's not your fault at all, Chuppi! We're a team, after all. Anything that happened is a burden for us all to share." He couldn't really say much more then that without giving her tears away to Yin, whom he was still trying to keep behind him.

Taryn immediately clucked her tongue and shook her head, rushing to Chuppi and wrapping her arms around her. While she didn't think it was particularly mature to break down crying at a loss (and was it a loss?), Chuppi was adorable, and she needed comforting.

"We're not done yet." she assured the little chupacabra.

The weremantis was already slightly distressed, and very much trained on what was going on around them, trying to figure out if anyone had just seen that. What he heard however was Mademoiselle Temes apologizing. But for what? Why would she need to apologize to th--

She had not protected the castle and they lost?

...Yin had not protected the castle either. He had been so focused on attacking the tentacle that he had never even considered working on the castle's defense, or even checking to see if anyone was defending. Could he have possibly redirected the tentacle while he was attacking? What if he had been the team's weak link during this fight? He knew that Alexander and him were the only two first years on the team...had their inexperience at the school led to the team's downfall?

The zomboil had stood so that he could not see the rather petite ghoul, and he made no move to. In fact he made not move to get up whatsoever, simply staring down at the sand. How could he live with himself if he had been the cause of his team's downfall? Again. He had dropped the ball again.
