Tarel was starting to wonder if the two remaining smaller eggs would be greens too. He knew greens were almost half of all dragons, but still--so many greens out of a clutch of thirteen? He glanced at Zervion and sent a shrug in the other boy's direction. Were all hatchings like this? He smiled as N'var Impressed a blue--he didn't know N'var well, but he'd seen him around. And the blue was absolutely lovely.

As more dragonets Impressed, he was starting to feel something more than happiness for their riders. Jealousy? It was an unusual feeling, but the former harper apprentice figured that was it. He wanted what they had--a dragon, a friendship and enternal bond. He had heard Weyrlings were given more to do than even candidates, but he had yet to find if that was true, or not. He would have to ask Zervion--or perhaps experience it for himself.

Another green hatched, but the fifteen turn old boy's attention was still on the orbiting green hatching. She really should have Impressed by now. Would she go between? He had heard that newly hatched dragons needed to eat soon after they hatched--but she didn't seem troubled at all. Until the blinding flash green seemed to guide the other back towards the candidates. He gave a relieved smile. He hoped now, she would Impress to someone.

These young ones are foolish. Sniping and causing Brakiath to bellow. I hope they are not as foolish when they get older. Daroth grumped to N'ymi. He moved very carefully so that they could get a better view. There were still two greens and several eggs shaking and cracking. All in all, it was not a bad Impression. These greens seem to not know what they want at all. Once they are settled, I shall help them. I love the little hatchlings even though they are noisy and fussy.

"They do otherwise they'd go Between. An' none of tha' happenin' yet." N'ymi replied. She could only hope that there would be no young ones going between and that every egg had a match on the Sands. "We'll be helpin' if they need us. Dun' push it, 'kay?"
`````````````````````````````
V'tur shook his head as the gold's bellow went through his head. Really? It was almost too much for him. But looking down, he was pleased with the size of the hatchlings and pleased at how assertive they were. If all went well, everyone of them would be Impressed and settled shortly.
Those that had Impressed were taking their new lifemates off for their first feeding. And another of her fellow candidates had Impressed! The vintner watched as the green found Hers. Which left only one dragonet for the moment. Narisa had to wonder if this was how Hatching's usually went. Were all the eggs supposed to hatch at the same time or one right after the other? Or each at a time of their choosing? All of this was new to the auburn haired candidate. But she couldn't deny she wasn't enjoying this chance to witness and be part of a Hatching herself. Speaking of 'hatching', her eyes widened a little in anticipation to see what the gold dragonet would look like. Except, the egg only produced a large crack before it stopped moving. At about the same time, another of the large eggs had started to rock and twitch around. But again, nothing else happened.
Frowning slightly, Narisa felt the first hints of disappointment. It decreased a little at the sight of an egg partially hatching. The little dragonet snout sticking out was much more progress than the previous two. And then, just as quickly as that feeling came about, it disappeared as another egg did hatch. Narisa couldn't help but let her lips curl into a smile as her gaze took in the dragonets who had hatched. Three greens now. One of which was still the easily distracted green. The three didn't seem to be in any particular hurry, and the vintner again wondered if this was usual for a Hatching.
Still watching, two of the greens seemed ready to find their riders (or that was why Narisa assumed they headed towards the candidates). One came towards the girls while the other two went towards the guys. That same excited feeling she got every time a dragonet came their way fluttered around in her stomach as the green inspected them. She was not the one, but another of the girls certainly was! The vintner grinned and congratulated the newest pair. She didn't know this girl, or hadn't gotten the chance to meet her (at least she didn't think she had). But Narisa was still happy for them.
A sprinting young dragon! Well, that was sort of new. Lena wondered, amused, if she'd keep the prelidiction for speed in the air as well as on the ground. Either way, the tailing trail green certainly seemed to be a bit of a handful...at least it was a very decisive handful?
The orbiting green, of course, was attempting to play, though her sister seemed far more concerned with heading towards the female candidates. Lena tensed slightly at the full throttle approach (this was how accidental maulings happened, she was sure) but then the green tumbled down again. Oh? Impression? One of the girls certainly reacted as if so. Well, good for her!
And another green hatched soon enough, and then another--quiet hatching that, though Lena recalled the egg for a gentle, loving one. And she was headed for the boys? Lena wasn't surprised a green would head for the males but rather a bit amused that a matching temperament might be found among them. Not that there weren't plenty of gentle, loving males to be found if one looked...
Then the distant sea egg moved as if to hatch soon, and the orbiting green made off for it as she had with all the others--or she would have, if her sister wasn't encouraging her to find Hers. The huff the orbiting green gave was perhaps the most amusing sight of the night yet. Focused as she was on that first green, she almost didn't notice the brilliant flash green until she was suddenly amongst the female candidates, with sniffs and nudges for everyone. A friendly one, this green? Or just very curious? Still, she turned around and headed back to one girl near the front of things, and that was that.
Two greens still on the Sands (though only time would tell if the orbiting green had truly been "encouraged" into avoiding distraction) with one resolutely headed amongst the boys, and one egg likely to be a brown, or perhaps a large blue yet to hatch... Lena wasn't concerned about the high proportion of greens (though really it was about on target, half the clutch) though she was curious to see if Mystweed had made for a lower proportion of atypicals. Would there be a second bronze amongst the eggs yet to hatch as well? If Lena was a longshot gambler and the Mystweed had done its job, it was possible both the distant sea and rocky band eggs would yield bronzes; browns were fair guesses too as there hadn't been any of those yet on the sands. It was curious as well there'd only been one blue, perhaps another or two was in store?
By the time the other newly Impressed riders began to trickle to the feeding tables, Ammonth’s feeding was almost finished. Halfway through the bronze had insisted they try to save some of the best meat for the yet-to-hatch queen, and the new pair had shuffled around the tables and shifted through buckets looking for the choicest cuts. After one particularly nasty look from a kitchen attendant, however, Hesian had declared they’d found enough. They were now sitting on the far edge of the feeding table, closest to the Sands, and watching the remainder of the Hatching with as much attention as they could muster. Hesian still wanted to know which of the Candidates Impressed, but Ammonth was less interested – that was, until the golden egg twitched. The queen deserves all eyes on her. But the queen did not hatch, and instead a different egg spilled yet another green. Ammonth snorted in frustration.
Placing a fond hand onto the bronze’s hand, Hesian was suddenly struck with a thought. “Hey! This means I have to change my name now; rider honorific and all that. Hm, I’ve always been rather fond of my name.” He mused quietly for a moment while thinking. This was a big decision! He would be called this name for the rest of his life – Hesian would be no more. It had to be something awesome, of course. “What about H’san?” Ammonth, who had been watching the newest green joined the feeding tables, turned back to His. I approve! It is a strong name, like mine, and also one less syllable to shout while we are having fun. The newly christened H’san laughed heartily, a warm feeling spreading throughout his body. The love he already felt for Ammonth was incredible and he already found it hard to remember what it had felt like before bonding to the dragon.
The two continued to watch the Hatching, and H’san began to wonder if Ammonth would be the only bronze of the clutch. There was that one rather large egg beside the queen egg that could be a bronze, but no browns had hatched yet either. Another could maybe hold a smaller bronze, but H’san was betting that it would be a brown. Would it be normal for two bronzes to hatch but only one brown? H’san didn’t think so. All of the other eggs were far too small to hatch anything but a green or possibly a blue. Do not worry about what my clutchsibs will be. You already have your dragon, better than all of those!
As the guiding light and orbiting greens reached the male candidates the latter flopped down and rolled onto her back with a cheerful snort, seeming to enjoy the heat of the sand. For her part, the guiding light green sat down beside her sister, but rather than looking up at the boys her gaze turned over to the female candidates. Back amongst the unhatched eggs the distant sea egg rocked and cracked a bit more, and eventually burst outward to reveal what was unmistakably a massive blue. The egg had been big enough to contain a brown and this pale-hided young fellow was too, perhaps not a large brown but he was certainly bigger than any blue to hatch at Trine for quite some time.
Giving a cheerful trumpet he started off towards the male candidates, and was met half way by the orbiting green who had got back up and wandered off again. Much as the guiding light green had done he nudged her, although it was more of a big-brotherly pointed but careful shove than the guiding light's gentle nuzzles. As the guiding light green joined them again and gave the orbiting green more nudges of her own, she took the hint and turned back to the male candidates once more. Just as it seemed she was going to be distracted again by her siblings over at the feeding tables, her gaze caught on a particular young man in the middle of the pack of boys and she charged forward with a piercing squeal of joy. It would probably be a good idea for anyone between her and Tarel to get out of the way.
"Oh Tarel Mine there you are! Let's go now, your Lunath wants to go and see Ammonth! He's so handsome, isn't he?"
A blue! It looked to be quite a large blue, too, although she didn't have much experience with hatchling sizes. Either way, it was a nice touch of variety after the mass of greens - not that there was anything wrong with greens, as long as they were nice ones. And finally, finally the orbiting green Impressed! She sure had taken her time about it.
Nawa was eager for the Hatching to proceed quickly, both to get all this nervousness and waiting over with, and so she could get her leg taken care of. The more time she had to think about it, the more it hurt.
Ruven watched the orbiting green wordlessly. She continued to chatter with her peers and romp around the Sands as usual. Quietly he wondered if she would ever Impress. If all of the eggs hatched and she was left behind to go in between, it would be very sad. Maybe she knew who Hers was, and was simply having too much fun to leave just yet. If that was the case, her candidate would have to wait a very long time still. Hopefully the little one would grow hungry and give up her games before morning came.
The brilliant flash green for a while seemed preoccupied by her siblings as well, at least temporarily. Without warning, the guarding light egg hatched. Its inhabitant, another green, joined her two sisters. She then proceeded to nudge them. Well, at least one of these dragonettes had the right idea.
There were currently three greens on the sands. Three. Ruven had never been so uncomfortable around a trio of females in his life. Shortly after being prodded by the guiding light green (how appropriate – she had pointed her clutchmates in the right direction), the brilliant flash green trotted over to the female candidates. She examined a handful of the girls. A few moments later it became clear that she had Impressed Eliza. One down, two to go.
The guiding light green, however, seemed more interested in the males. Ruven cast a sidelong glance around his group. How did females Impressing males work? Did they tend to go for the effeminate guys, or was there no preference? Silently he wished he knew more about the process of Hatchings. Oh well. It didn’t matter if he understood Hatchings or not. These dragons knew what they were doing. When a green squealed and darted for Tarel, he carefully stepped out of the way.
He followed some of his fellows’ gaze over to the distant sea egg, which appeared to be close to hatching. When a dragonette emerged, it was not a brown, as most of the candidates had expected. No – it was a massive blue! Were they even supposed to grow that large?
Though both greens had reached the boys, the less silly one looked back at the girls--would she be coming over this way next, then? Lena didn't have time to wonder much, for the distant sea egg revealed a very large hatchling...a very large blue! Even if she'd mused the possibility in passing, she still hadn't expected it. He was just as cheerful out of egg as he'd been at the Touching, and Lena was amused to see the blue get in on trying to make the orbiting green find Hers already. It seemed that perhaps was why they'd all chosen to gather near the boys, as the green's squeal made it obvious she'd found what she'd taken her time looking for. Lena did hope the others boys were able to move out of the way in time; an energetic hatchling dragon charging into the group of candidates really wasn't something you wanted to be in the way of...
Allaxon was delighted that the greens were impression so well and he was glad the bouncy orbiting green had not gone between. He jumped out of the way when the squealing green barreled through to get to Tarel. He was a lucky boy to have such a boisterous and happy dragon, Allaxon thought. He walked over and congratulated him then returned to his spot his eyes on the dragons and eggs still on the sand. This hatching seemed to be going quite well and he hoped it continued to do so.
Aeri huffed. The only dragons left on the sands were the guiding light green and the orbiting green. Both seemed to be headed for the boys. How boring. Having nothing invested in either of the current hatchlings, she turned her eyes back to the main clutch. The queen was not moving. The rocky band egg was still. Perhaps the burning egg still held something of interest? She was oh-so-looking forward to seeing that one hatch. It was a shame it was taking its sweet time.
A large crack announced the hatching of the distant sea egg. Aeri had not minded that one either at the Touching. It had been extremely unique. When she spotted that it was not a brown as she had anticipated but a massive blue, she could not conceal her surprise. Well, he turned out to be very unique after all.
Would he Impress a male or female, she wondered?
Lilias's eyes lit up as she noticed the large blue. Well weren't you a surprise, blue to match the distant sea, she thought poetically. It wasn't a secret that Lilias enjoyed the water, being seabred it was in her blood. She smiled at the giant blue and was happy that two more of the greens impressed, especially the orbiting who had seemed otherwise inclined. She would like to meet that one.
Lilias pondered for a bit what flying over the ocean would feel like, what flying over the trees even would feel like, she had been flying a few times but it was apparently different when the dragon was yours. There were five eggs left with two hatchlings on the sand and she was soaking up every minute of this experience. She loved to watch the candidates faces as they impressed, and see the radiant joy that shawn out from two separate minds made one.
Not quite so distracted by the new pairing near them, Narisa noticed that another of the green trio made her Impression. One of the guys. It wasn't anyone she knew, or if it was, she didn't recognize him. But she was happy to see the green found Hers. Faintly, she wondered if the wandering green would find Hers soon too. She didn't want to think in the negative direction. The appearance of another dragonet hatching helped to avoid such thoughts like that. Narisa blinked at the blue that had hatched. It was huge! With that large egg, she had thought it would be of the larger dragon colors. But clearly, that had been the wrong assumption to make. Who will you choose as Yours? She wondered, still very much surprised by his size.
"Well, there's one less worry," E'lai said wryly as the rather silly orbiting green had finally made her choice of a candidate. Good thing, too; she likely wouldn't have been able to last the entire Hatching, even if that was what seemed she might be angling for. He could just see the Weyrwoman chasing the green away from the atypical eggs she'd need to shovel-whack open... Well, it was for the best it hadn't come to it. "Got your eyes on a particular Candidate there?" the greenrider asked, noticing S'ren seemed to be watching the girls.
Eltimioth was pleased with the greens so far for the most part, though of course none of them were quite as pretty as her. Oh well, it was the way the world worked~
Balt gasped at the massive blue. Even after Standing for three turns he never saw a blue this size before! Watching the three dragons shuffle about so close to him, he could not take his eyes off the pale blue giant. His heart was pounding with a toxic mixture of excitement and fear. Normally he didn't feel this way until the end of the hatching, when the very last dragon stood on the sands, but this blue was so magnificent he felt as though he had to have it. He struggled to keep his mind clear. Please, please let this one be Mine!
