I know what you're saying, but I'm doing it more for character reasons. My character likes to stick around cities, so he's not much of a nature-seeker. If he does travel, he makes sure he has a caravan or is going along with someone's vehicle. If he has to really adventure by foot, unless he has some trusty friends who can fulfill his weaknesses, he's going to be very reluctant to.
When you want to make your character seem more real, you make sure that he has stuff or does things that fit with who he is. The more game-orientated player makes sure their character has the optimum equipment. For high level players, this means taking their gold and buying magic equipment that will make their character great at what they do.
However, I follow on the opposite spectrum. I tend to randomize what items my character gets and make a story on how they got them. He may get a couple of helpful dead on items, but in reality, unless you go to a specialized magic store, you usually don't get the items you want. DMs sometimes make exceptions and plan the right item for a party to find, but a more natural setting has it to where you find an item that doesn't relate at all to your character. The fun then comes from making use of that item in creative ways.

themightyjello Well then buy it before you go to the mountain. Or before you go into the cave. Or before you try to scale the castle walls. Edit: Never mind

It is a strong racial faith that most of them share that allows my character to have a higher religion than our Desi's paladin. I mean that's the reason why I gave him +5 Religion in the first place. Add that to the fact that my character has 4 more intelligence than Desi's Paladin 10.

Gar Stellarhammer is a young dwarven man who was born into a lot of family pressure. You see he comes from a long line of Dwarven Seers who legend says were the first to break away from the traditional role of the Dwarf and become Warlocks of Star Pact. Perhaps the first of all Star Pact Warlock's the family leader always had great Prophetic Powers. The first Leader prophesied long ago that one day a chosen one could be born to them. In the form of another revolutionary who would challenge the Traditional Dwarven way of life and eventually become the Dwarven Demigod of Fate. No this prophecy never interested Gar and he didn't believe in it either, but this ironically lead him to be suspected my the rest of his family as the chosen one. You see Gar wasn't a typical child of his family other then being talented as a Star Pact Warlock he was different because he loved to act. He wanted deeply to become an actor and of course his parent's didn't approve as they thought their son's potential as a Warlock would be wasted. Now for many months Gar prayed to Moradin for a chance to be become an Actor and eventually he got a vision in a dream from Moradin. Moradin told him "Become a Hero of your people my son and your life will be turned into the greatest play about our kind. Perhaps even an Epic Ballad in your honor. I know you have more individual desires then most of your kinds, but I know not deep down you value your family as much if not more then as any other children of mine." It was then decided to take the advice of the one who created his race and started what might one day be the Greatest of all stories his life as an Adventurer. The reason being that the combination of potentially achieving his dream beyond what he had ever hoped while still keeping his family's honor intact was to made the temptation to great for him to resist, but it was a long time until he would be ready as he was just a kid. Now our story must now take a detour to the story of a girl named Enma. Enma wasn't born this world rather she was born in the World of Toril on the continent of Faerun to a young couple. The mother was a elf who worked as a High of Priestest of Selune while the Father was an Expert Bow craftsmen that could rival even the greatest elven artisans. One day while she was going to get trained to be a priest a mysterious rift opened up and she was then knocked unconscious. When she woke up she was in this world high in the mountains in the dead of winter. This area was a dense forest of which she was in about the middle. Currently their was a blizzard going on around her, but a young passing dwarven male rescued her and tried taking her to his house, but he was carrying way to much to help. Suddenly a female wolf came to his when he saw him struggling to save the stranger at the risk of his own. This wolf was unusually intelligent and leaned down near by as if motioning for him to put Enma on her back which he did. As they ran toward the man's place he lead the way. When they finally got there. They waited hours for her to wake up and when she finally the man said "Hello I am Gar Stellarhammer and me and this wolf I ran into saved your life miss!" "I don't remember who I am, but I do remember my who I serve a Goddess named Selune. Thank you for rescue me you two." she replied while first looking the wolf in the eye and the trying to look the Young Gar in the eye, but all she did was blush. Years passed and the Wolf who she named Tsukitsume(Moon Claw) after her goddess and her became great friends with Gar. In fact ever since they first as kids met Gar and Enma have had romantic feelings for one another. They were now living together along with the rest of Gar's Family. When it came time for them to pursue their separate dreams while heading out in the World. Before the left they promised each other they would meet again, but neither worked up the courage to confess to each other. They went their separate ways and haven't seen each other since. Character Sheet: Gar Stellarhammer

If anyone's worried about someone being under prepared, my Rogue is packing so much crap "because it could come in handy" that it really shouldn't matter if someone forgot something or doesn't have something due to characterization (that is, assuming I'm in the party at the time.)
Besides, we're Level 1. It's not like we're exactly supposed to be able to overcome everything. Breaking into a castle's all good until you realize that you're one failed Stealth Check away from a phalanx of Guards using you for spear practice. sweatdrop I presume we'll be doing something interesting but not suicidal in this game, if only because of our level.

I don't even have a character history. I'm pretty confused about the Deva's. My understanding is they're trying to reach some sort of enlightenment, and become closer with their God, which is why choosing a cleric made sense in terms of class. I'm not sure if I even have a history, I'm pretty sure he was just "born" into this adult body, and set off to join a group of adventurers. I'm making my character pretty apathetic towards the others in the group, but still caring about them, as they're potentially the key for him unlocking his path to becoming with the Gods. I imagine him to be played sort of like Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen, he sees himself as an immortal, and above the mortal affairs, but less sympathetic to mortal needs and emotions.

Hmm, with all the character back stories starting to build up, perhaps we should have a small section devoted to a blurb about them.
*pokes the currently absent Ryugi* When you have a chance?

I expect character personalities will become evident during play more than anything.

Is my Character interesting enough? I am going to go make a back up now that I have Martial Power on this Mac. smile It's a class I don't think we have yet. The back is Enma Shinigami, Female Half-elf Ranger and by some strange twist of Fate Gar's childhood friend. I am hoping Martial Power will have some cool new Ranger Options as I know they at least have new options for it. I haven't got to the part where I actually check them out.

Gar Stellarhammer NG Dwarf Warlock(Star Pact) 2. Enma Shinigami Gar's childhood friend and a Half-Elf Beastmaster with a Wolf Companion. 3. ??? Stellarhammer Gar's Cousin and betrayer to the Family. A chaotic Evil Dwarf Warlock(Infernal Pact) 4. A Drow of some gender and Class. Edit: So much for that idea...;(

Any of them is probably okay otherwise.
