She rubbed her temples, Lin was just not use to loosing control, though she didn't really. If she had, she probably would have said more.
"I'll be alright," she replied.
She came her to have a dose of sanity, not to find out the world was becoming a more dangerous place (like it wasn't already dangerous). Lin though rationalized that this was life, wasn't this what she had been yelling at the Radicals only a day or two before?
"What is this going to mean for Haven?"
Specifically what did this mean for Aragost, that she had to know.

Sir Valdemar shook his head sadly. "I don't know," he said quietly, heading down the hall once more. "I honestly cannot say. It is possible that the ranch can continue to exist as it has for decades ... untouched by the world around them ... but it is equally possible that the morgawr will first head there, for it is drawn to power, and there is none whose power rivals that of Lord Aldrich."
He sighed. "I fear, Lin, as I have not feared in Ages. And I fear for Lord Aldrich ... he is the greatest of us all ... but who knows how powerful the morgawr may have become in twenty five thousand years since it was last seen?"

"Well I guess it depends, what has it been doing for those thousands of years," Lin shrugged.
She knew so little about how it disappeared or anything of that nature, she couldn't even begin to ask. Though Aragost knew like everyone else, which begged the question what was going through the man's head? Miyu hadn't mentioned anything different, but Aragost was one of those people who would be good at.. what was the game? Poker she believed.
"You mentioned about stealing me away for a while?" Lin asked, or wondering if Sir Valdemar used that as an excuse to have Tinuviel talk to the Queen.

Sir Valdemar nodded.
"Two reasons," he said quietly. "First, because knowing you, you are full of questions, and in this case I think it wise for you to have your questions answered as soon as possible, and as accurately as possible. Secondly, because I need your help."
He looked down at Lin intently. "You are going to help me figure out a way to tell Lord Aldrich what we have done, and why, so that he will not turn his anger on me."

It was somewhat comforting to know what Lin wasn't the only one worried about Aragost's reaction, even though she felt bad about it, and not just because Aragost was singly the most scary person one has ever met.
"You do realize the moment you open your mouth he'll know," Lin told her mentor, "And... I can't imagine him not realizing it would come down to this. He knows just like everyone else in Haven about the danger, but Miyu didn't mention about him acting any differently, granted he might not have because Miyu gets frightened really really easily..."
But point of the matter was the only reason why she felt at least a bit safe was that Aragost had to have known, unless he knew something they didn't that actually made this whole thing unnecessary.
"So unless Aragost knows something that everyone else either does not know, forgot or didn't think of that makes it possible to get rid of without him, he really can't be that angry of course... Aragost likes his privacy.... which is why I said just us, because at least in a way he has that."
So what if he went to the Southland on the request of the Queen, it wouldn't be the first time, it wouldn't be that unusual. Everyone knew that Aragost was amazingly good and scary, he could pull it off.

Sir Valdemar smiled at Lin. "You are correct," he murmured, "my Lord would already know. Nevertheless, I have betrayed his confidence and broken my oath ... as have you. I can only hope he will forgive us."
He began to lead her up the stairs. "And now for your questions - as I am sure you must have many."

"I and I wouldn't break it if it wasn't serious, and really I haven't seemed to be doing well in that department," Lin replied dryly.
She let that thought go, there were questions, well many but she wasn't sure where to start.
"How did it come back? You seem to have an idea of how," Lin ventured, "In fact it was suggested several times but I don't know the story."

Sir Valdemar grimaced. "The very first question you ask me is one that I wish I knew the answer to, myself," he sighed. "I have ... an idea, but nothing more. Do you remember the druids that you saw? The room in which they were holding their meeting when they were destroyed?"
He looked down at Lin, his eyes weary.

"Yea..." Lin looked thoughtful, "They were arguing, having a major disagreement over something. The room had books, so... it was either some sort of library, or a place for research..... or both."
This whole thing was making him look old, she thought to herself, well not old perse, more like... he needed to rest or something like that.

Sir Valdemar nodded. "That was one of the rooms at Altak-Bet Ainúl, the fortress where the druids studied. Twenty five thousand years ago, the entire fortress vanished, just when we had begun to fear that the entire world would be destroyed by the morgawr. It was discovered only less than a century ago that Achaar, the last surviving druid, had taken the fortress into a place out of time and space, to protect the land ... he had been under attack at the time, and only his spell saved him, and us."
He looked ahead of them as they walked down the hall towards his study once more. "It is my belief," he murmured, "that when the fortress was restored to our world, so were those who were trapped within ... the High Druid, Achaar ... the man who searched for them ... and the morgawr."

"If that's really the case, then the morgawr might not have changed at all in all that time, it's like.. being frozen, but... no one is really sure," she murmured thoughtfully, "And that was a century ago?"
There was one other thing tugging at her mind, information were like puzzles and Lin liked puzzles, mystery ones.
"Less than a century," she corrected herself, "Any ideas what might have kept it? It sounds odd, that now it would show up and not back then."
It was... from what she managed to gather from others around her nearly sixty years if not more since the portal was first opened.

Sir Valdemar shrugged one shoulder, the book weighing down his other arm too much for him to shrug both of them.
"It has been seventy four years since the fortress has returned," he said quietly. "I have no idea what might have kept it quiet until now. Perhaps it had to regain strength. Perhaps it had to relearn its powers. Perhaps it was simply trapped beneath the rubble of its own destruction. I have no idea. I know little of the creature itself ... all that I know, I learned only afterwards. I was fortunate enough never to run across the creature."

Seventy four years and a creature people knew very little about and the only thing one could gather was get close enough and you would be crispier than burnt toast.
"How strange..." Lin murmured as she continued to follow along, she would be happy when the book was back in the library and hopefully never to be seen again, "How did the fortress come back?"

"Ancient magic," Sir Valdemar replied reverently, "recalled for one further use, and then forgotten once again ... by most."
He smiled at Lin and decided to be a bit more explicit.
"Near the beginning of the Age," he murmured, "two elves came here, searching for their father ... he had gone in search of the fortress years before, and so their only clue was to search for the fortress themselves. Somehow, they found it and brought it back into existence ... along with Achaar and their father, both of whom died. And it would seem that the morgawr returned along with them ..."

"So.... if anyone has the best idea of what could have happened or did, it's them," Lin replied thoughtfully.
She didn't know what she would accomplish by this though, there wasn't anything she could do, but it was almost as if a chunk of history was missing. Though as she learnt now, however there was just something unsettling about all of this.
"Has anyone been up to the fortress since then? Or is it all ruin?"
