Though his fears were soon dispelled as a cheery, questioning yet familiar voice answered the phone. "Hello? Alex?" She seemed almost excited to see his number pop up on her caller ID. "I was just about to call you! Did I leave my book there by any chance? I've been looking for it fora while now..." She sighed, sounding a bit flustered, and tired, also really hoping her beloved read was there with him.

On the other end, Alex jumped when he heard her voice. "Yeah! Yeah, it's me. And yeah, you did leave your book here. I'm holding it right now. Do you want me to drop it off at your place, or do you want to come pick it up tomorrow, or...?" He scratched the back of his head with a corner of the book, but stopped as he realized how he was treating her prized possession. Good thing she wasn't able to see him do it or he had a vague feeling something else might be thrown at him.

"Umm...." There was a slight pause. "Yeah...I'll just pick it up tomorrow if thats ok. I have a class in the morning and I promised I'd have lunch with an old friend after that...but maybe I could meet you when you get off...?" On her end she bit her lip, waiting for a response.

"Yeah, sure!" he said with no effort to hide his enthusiasm. "I mean, I know this thing means a lot to you, and yeah, come see me during my break. I'll be here." As soon as the words came out, he cringed. Of course he would be there during his own break. "I'll be off around six."

Jess laughed a little, though not at him, more at her own awkwardness and utter flustered butterflies. "S-sounds great! I'll see you then..." She smiled, waited a moment, biting her lip before signing off. "Um Alright. Bye Alex.." She had a little laughter in her voice still, though a kind, casual kind than a mocking before she hung up.
On her end, she was still biting her lip, holding the phone to her chest with a slight blush on her cheeks. She couldn't wait for tomorrow now. Sure she was uneasy not having her book with her to read that night, but it was a much more pleasant alternative than poor Alex coming to her home... Oh what a nightmare that'd be... though the thought made her laugh. In fact, all the laughter intrigued the housekeeper walking by who merely gave a questioning look, sending Jess into more innocent and joyful laughter.

Alex was all smiles. He hadn't ever had time for women unless it was in very short bursts. A few one night stands and bad decisions had blocked him from ever taking anyone who seemed eager to be with him seriously, thinking that it would take a rather long while to establish dating. And yet, here they were, seeing each other and having an effect that was a bit more than simple friendship. Ah, he thought. If only they could have time to see the city outside of this cafe.

-----------
Jess stopped by just a tad late, hoping she could catch him as he was coming off work like the first time, so she wouldn't just have to run after she got her book back. She swore up and down she wasn't overly excited about this little run in, though she had checked her make up a dozen times more than usual and kept fixing her hair, which was still up in a bun and glasses on top of her head to help keep it all together.
She had just come form Kitty's store a while ago and despite being worried, she knew her friend could handle herself fine. Something just didn't sit right with her when it came to that man...perhaps when she wasn't so eager to meet Alex, she could stay longer to figure out why.
Just before she turned the last corner before she'd be visible form the coffee shop, Jess stopped and took a deep breath before finally gathering herself enough to strut around the corner and towards the shop. Though just as she was feeling pretty good about everything, she slipped on a puddle that was slowly wanting to freeze over, falling rather ungracefully all over the place before landing flat on her bum.
She was embarassed to say the least, furrowing her brow as she slowly picked her sore self up form off the ground, praying Alex didnt see her jsut then.

Alex had missed her fall, though he hadn't missed the snickers and little exclamations from people around the cafe tables. Being on his break gave him time for people-watching, which more often than not got him all riled up from the idiotic conversations he heard. This time, though, it was their carelessness at not helping the person who had fallen that really got his blood boiling.
He stuck his head out the door to see that coming up to the shop was Jess, who seemed to have some dirt on her leg and some scrapes on her hands. Just the way she was looking at herself in a flustered fashion told him enough. "Hey," he said gently, as he held his hand out to her. "I've got your book... you alright? Look like you took a spill."

Her face turned absolutely scarlet as she looked up at him, no really able to find any appropriate words other than "I'm f-fine..." She was a bit shaken but not too hurt as she took his hand, cringing a bit as she stood, feeling the various bruises that would most likely be there the next morning. "Thank you...Yes I'm just clumsy is all..." She managed to finally put together a complete sentence, smiling awkwardly but with gratitude and humility in her eye.

Alex took up her one hand to have a closer look. A small stone was there, and with a quick flick of his pinched fingers, he had it out. He was still holding on to her scraped hand as he looked at her face, searching for some hint of a bruise or dirt there as well. All he could find, though, were her pretty eyes and the redness on her cheeks.
"It was probably just ice..." he said, and without another word, Alex pulled her inside where there would be a quiet table in the corner waiting for them, away from prying eyes.

Jess froze as he examined her, not used to such careful caring inspection in quite some time. What made her blush more was the fact he was still grasping her hand as he numbly led her inside and to a table in the back.
"Th-thank you again...I'm fine though...Um...You said you had my book?" She attempted to make things less awkward by mentioning her 'reason' for being there...

Alex had them both seated where he had set his coffee down, just to reserve it for themselves. It was perfect, concealed by booths and the shadows where light couldn't quite reveal them. At the mention of her book, he went into the inner pocket of his vest. The book had been kept safely tucked right beside him, though created a comical little rectangle through the fabric in just the right light. "Right here," he said, and wordlessly he handed it over in the same condition she had left it in.

Jess sighed in relief, taking the book eagerly and holding it close to her as if embracing an old friend. "Thank you so much..." She said so softly, bringing the book up to her eyes a moment to read something on the inside cover, squinting so much she finally just moved her glasses down off her head to read better. "It was like I Was missing an arm you know? I always carry a copy with me..." She confided, smiling ever so slightly over the top of the book as she closed it once more and slipped it into her bag before returning her attention to Alex.
She looked quite different with her glasses on and hair a bit messy. She looked... normal. Not glamorous, though not plain. Maybe it was just how she smiled at him that made her seem so different...

Alex saw that transformation, too. She did look normal, like she wasn't a product of a disfunctional, broken, rich family. Like she wasn't a party girl, but some kind of budding intellectual. It intrigued him to no end, though he still kept his cool and tried not to seem overly interested in just why she was the way she was.
"So that book to you is like a communicator or cell to most people. That's a refreshing change." He offered a smile and sipped his coffee. Somehow his breaks never seemed to be long enough, and now they felt practically nonexistent.

She smiled shrugging a bit as she looked down at the table a little. "Not many people know that about me...so feel special." She smirked ever so slightly, laughter flickering behind her colbalt eyes as she looked out the window a bit awkwardly. "So...when do you get off tonight?" She asked, a little embarassed as she met his gaze again.
