Armus paused for a moment, then smiled and nodded at Kanis. "They will be fine," she assured her softly. "Corrah would never let the wolves get him or your brother. He knows more than anyone about taking care of himself in these mountains ... they will be safe."

She sort of wondered about why Kanis all of a sudden wanted to know how she and Corrah had met, but she couldn't think of any reason why not to tell. She moved to her feet and began collecting small pieces of wood, showing the girls which ones to get as she did so.

"When I was a child," she began, "I didn't have anyone in my life or anywhere to stay, and I didn't know the first thing about feeding myself. I ended up in the mountain and nearly got myself killed ... Corrah saved me, fed me, taught me, and here I am."

Corrah stared at the boy, hiding his curiosity. Did the boy have some feelings after all? Perhaps so ...

"Would you like to join them?" he asked in a flat tone, hiding any emotion or thought from him.

Kanis tilted her head listening to the short story. It was like Armus was hiding alot but she did not want to pry Armus' memories could be rather painful. "I see....has Corrah lived on this mountain all his life?" She was a surprise still and as such very curious.

Ruran turned to look at Corrah. "What in death or try to prove myself as worthy of being in their pack?" He rolled his eyes, "I am not pothetic enough for them to think I am a pup....they would eat me, and I don't have to prove myself to any one but myself. Not the wolves, not my family, and not you!"

He sighed and shivered again no longer distracted by the calls of the wolves.

Armus smiled and nodded. "As far as I know, yes," she told Kanis. "And I do know for a fact that until the other day when he met you guys, he had never seen another Second other than me. He doesn't really know how to act around other people ... it's the only time he's awkward."

She laughed. She actually kind of liked that about him, it was kind of cute, she thought.

Aras brought over a twig and added it to their pile for the fire.

Corrah laughed his deep, menacing laugh. "No one's asking you to prove anything to anyone," he smirked at the boy. "If I wanted you to prove something to me I'd be telling you to do something a little more impressive than getting down from where you are."

The howls died down slowly, and the night grew quiet once more.

Kanis nods and helps form the fire pile. "Well he didn't seem...too bad....maybe short to anger." Who was she kidding she didn't know anything about Corrah or how to act with others herself...expect to always be polite.

She sighed, so they had been along on the mountain top for so many years...that much have been hard. "It must have been hard never seeing anyone else for so long...I bet you two get on each other's nerves often huh?"

Ruran shook his head, "No telling me to figure out a way down it teaching me something and is asking me to prove that I can work my way down." Man he sounded like a book worm for a minute there and he growled. "I am really getting tired of looking at you...and it is too dark to see anything else..." he mumbled.

Armus actually laughed at that. "Hell no!" she grinned, collecting some stones to make a fire pit. "He hasn't gotten on my nerves since I was a kid, just learning from him ... he used to make me all sorts of mad back then, he made me feel so stupid ..."

She leaned down closer to Kanis and winked. "But here's a secret. When he's pissing you off and telling you you're not good enough, he's making you angry so that you'll work harder to improve yourself to prove him wrong. He doesn't mean any of it, he just wants to help you get better."

Corrah chuckled slightly. "What's the matter?" he taunted the boy. "Don't like being up there anymore? Get ready for a good long wait, brat, because only you can decide when you will be coming down."

He heard steps on the ground in the trees around them and he knew that the wolves were near, even if they were not yet making themselves known.

Kanis looked shocked at the intensity of Armus' laugh and words. It didn't seem right that someone would never get on your nerves since you were a child. Surely there had been days when they had gotten mad at each other?

She blinked and looked confused, "But wouldn't that some times go the wrong way and make someone give up? And shouldn't we not know this? Or is he mean enough that knowing what he is trying to do wont change how it makes us feel? She flushed brightly and bowed formally to Armus, "I am sorry I ask too many questions. Please ignore them."

Ruran growled, "Like hell I am going to give into your smug face! I ain't giving up yet no matter what you throw at me!"

Armus shook her head. "Questions are good," she smiled. "Always good. If you have a question, always ask. You don't learn if you don't ask. At any rate, yes, acting like that could very easily make someone give up - but the thing about it is that if the person does give up, not only are they weak in Corrah's eyes, but they are weak in their own eyes. You're right - he doesn't care about your feelings, because that's not what he's been asked to train. Only you can control your feelings. He was asked to train your body."

She patted Kanis on the head and smiled. "Don't worry, I'll be there to help you emotionally. If Corrah makes you angry, you can talk to me. If he makes you cry, you can talk to me. He's just trying to make you stronger. Just keep that in mind."

Corrah made no response, though his lips were still curled up in a smirk. Whether the boy wanted it or not he was getting some training in. Even if he was too stupid or to stubborn to come down, he was getting in some endurance training. For Corrah, it was a win-win situation. The longer he waited, the more of a win it would be.

Kanis' second question had not be answered right but the words struck deeper to the heart. Corrah would not care about how they feel he would not care about what they though. He only cared about training them then getting rid of them.

She nodded her head after Armus patted it and tried to commit it to memory. Corrah would never be a friend, he was just a trainer who wanted to get rid of them as soon as he could. "Yes Armus....so...how do we make our beds?"

She would try not to come to Armus crying. Corrah would do what ever it took to get them to work and to get strong and leave. She would not linger on then.

Ruran growled and kicked the air once. He was starting to get mad again. He would so make Corrah pay one day. He just needed to find the man's weakness.

Armus finished making the pit and set all of the twigs and such inside, then lit it using some flint that was hanging from her belt.

"Find the softest materials that you can," she replied, "leaves and such, and make a sort of mattress out of them. You're lucky, you're still small, so you don't need much."

She smiled as the tinder started to catch.

"It would take me quite a while to find enough for me to sleep on," she added softly. "But I'm used to sleeping on the bare ground, so I don't worry about it anymore."

Aras had been silent all along, but now she remained silent and moved off to find leaves that she could use for a bed. "And not poison ivy leaves," she reminded herself as she searched.

Corrah didn't move. The boy's temper was starting to show ... it could not be long now.

Kanis nods and goes off with her sister. She wonders if she should just start sleeping on the ground to get use to it. She looks at Aras..."Is something wrong Aras?" She looked at her sister a bit worried down.

Ruran hung there fuming in anger. He hated this all so much!

Aras smiled at Kanis and shook her head. "I'm okay," she assured her sister. "I'm just tired ... and listening."

It had been a long trek after all and a long day, and she wasn't used to anything like this yet.

Corrah could feel the wolves drawing nearer. Perhaps they were just watching, but there was always the chance they would attack. One never knew.

Kanis nods, "Alright then I will help you get leaves for your bed and we can go to sleep...I am tired too." She smiled and took her sister's hand and looked for not poison ivy leaves.

Ruran growled and shifted again but grew still and quiet after a minute. There was no need to get angry though he just wanted down so he would not have to keep looking at Corrah.

It was a while before Aras and Kanis had found enough leaves for them to make beds for them, but Aras had a question for her sister.

"Can we just make one bed and sleep together?" she asked, almost shyly. "I don't want to sleep by myself ..."

She was missing her parents, she wanted the comfort of her sister with her.

Corrah kept his eyes on Ruran but listened for the wolves that were around them. After a while, they came out from the trees and sat in a circle around the two elves, almost as if waiting for them to move, or for Corrah to let Ruran down. Still, they remained quiet.

Kanis laughs and nods, "I would love to share a bed with you. I miss mom and dad too." she said softly. She would have to rely on her sister for emotional support and friendship. After all their trainers were really just trainers, and though Armus was nice she in the end would be the same as Corrah. If he would be mean to get them to better themselves than maybe she would be really nice then kick them to the ground.

Ruran looked around in the night and saw the wolves. He felt his heart start to quicken. Now for sure he didn't want do and the pain and numbness was gone he just did not feel like being a morning wolf pack's meal.

Aras smiled and set her armload of leaves on the ground, then began to smooth them out. As long as she had Kanis with her, everything would be all right. She was sure of it.

"Can we sleep yet?" she asked Armus softly.

Armus smiled and nodded. "You two have done really well," she said brightly. "Go ahead. I'll keep watch. You two just sleep."

Corrah smiled inwardly, though outwardly his expression still did not change.

"Finally," he said softly. "Some sense. As you are, you wouldn't stand a chance against these wolves ... even if you were to grow to adult right this moment you would not have a chance of survival if they were to attack."

He paused. He himself held no fear for these creatures, only respect. He felt no danger from them.

"If you would swallow your pride," he added, "and let yourself be taught and trained ... you would someday have the strength and speed, perhaps even before adulthood, to defend yourself against them, and against things much stronger than them."
