Danny allowed a silence to lapse uninterrupted between them as they mutually enjoyed the bed and its soft warm before speaking again. “So how are your classes going, anyway? I never get to ask you.”

"Fine. Well, better this year since I'm caught up." Now he just had to fight to stay caught up. Learning spells this year was just as hard as trying to learn four years of spells in a span of one and a half. It seemed like the more complicated they were, the more stubborn his wand was. Stubborn, because if he thought of it otherwise then it would mean he just wasn't powerful enough to do it.
"Been trying to keep up with my other stuff too." He had been neglecting his violin for a while, and scorning his fire because it made it so difficult to do wand magic didn't help him at all. He had to work together with his magic to make it turn into spells, not force it. "My magic feels sluggish. It's like.... like..."
He tried to think of it in terms that Danny would understand, and that he was able to understand enough to explain. "It's like having a brand new game, the best, but you only have a really old computer to play it on."
That sounded sort of like it. It was a bit more complicated but his brain couldn't think of an explanation at the moment. Warm blankets and good company tended to do that.
"I don't even know what classes you like, or don't." He confessed, yawning. "I know you suck at potions though."
He gave Danny a teasing look. Godfrey tended to pay close attention to who was as good as he was though. And who wasn't, of course.

“I can’t even imagine having a crappy computer,” Danny joked with a comfortable grin, gathering the gist of what Godfrey was trying to convey. Back-end issues in a system on which you were trying to run a program. “But you’re doing really good,” he continued, honest and earnest, “I heard McGonagall discussing you with Snape. About your… complications.” Granted, she’d also said Frey needed to focus more on his schoolwork if he was going to be anything but acceptable in her class, but Danny didn’t make note of that. Even she’d admitted his complications were difficult to surmount. “She said you were doing good.”
He considered his own glasses and complications with furrowed eyebrows. “Yeah, Potions is one of my worst. I’m not good at Herbology but I like that class anyway. Umm. Technomagic is my absolute favorite, but that’s kinda obvious. I like that new Dueling class,” he added, referencing the new course taught by a Harry Potter Traveler hardly graduated himself. “I had to drop regular Defense to take it, but I’d already taken my required years anyway.”

"What? They were talking about me?" Godfrey's ears flicked forward but he snuggled deeper into the covers, a bit embarrassed, but also really pleased they cared or noticed enough to do so. He looked up to the Headmaster, definitely.
"I definitely couldn't take that duelling class, I'm not very good at those spells either. " That was partially a lie. Defence was coming easier and Voldemort often helped him with these spells more than others. As a result his fighting style was similar to Voldemort's, minus so many deadly and illegal spells, but he knew a good few handfulls of spells that would raise eyebrows.
"I like Professor Nott too much to drop his class." He might be able to drop it altogether if Voldemort would teach him though.
"Hey so did the headmaster say anything nice about me?" He was curious. The headmaster didn't exactly pass out praise like candy. "Bet he said I'm a suck up and I try too hard."
Godfrey grinned, but he knew he did. He tried too hard in lots of things. He overstudied defence and transfiguration theory to compensate for his abysmal magical performance. Defence was getting a bit easier- there were lots of ways to make shields and lots of offensive fire based spells. As long as nothing was water based, he was fine. Unfortunately animals tended to be made of quite a lot of liquid.

Danny paused to allow a yawn and snuggled deeper into his blanket. “They just said you’d need more work to reach your potential. McGonagall was suggesting you’d need more time to focus, that maybe she’d tutor you.” His thoughts rolled back to the partially eavesdropped conversation, the Transfiguration teacher fussing about Godfrey needing more designated time for his classwork, normal session hours not providing enough coverage to convey not only the spell work, but the technique tweaking necessary for Frey. Snape had insisted the boy would figure it out on his own and didn’t need further coddling. “He thinks you’re doing well on your own, actually,” Danny said quietly, his eyes falling half-shut, the lashes gleaming in the darkness. “Reckon he thinks well of you.”

"I want to try hard so I can stay. I want to show him I deserve to." Danny didn't need to know about his accidental magic criminal record any time soon.
But what Danny said made him really happy. Super happy. They really wanted him to do well. He was glad to know this because it only made him want to work harder. He wanted to prove he was worth the thought and time.
He felt warm and fuzzy. Fuzzier than normal, actually. He snuggled closer to Danny, pressing up against his arms and the pillow.
"Thanks Danny." He said, blinking slowly several times. He felt warm and more content than he had in ages. He just knew he was going to do wonderful things in his life and make a lot of people proud. But if he could just help them, he knew he could be happy enough with nothing in return.

“Don’t thank me for being an eavesdropper,” Danny said with a contented chuckle, pleased with having provided a scrap of good cheer to the boy he was now slow dating. Their closeness made him shuffle closer, pausing before gliding an arm beneath the pillow and, subsequently, beneath Godfrey’s head with the feather-filled softness seperating the crook of his elbow and Godfrey’s ear. His other hand lingered above the other male’s hip, fingers quirked and uncertain, before he lowered his palm to rest on the boy’s hip. “Of course you deserve to,” he added, yawning but tilting his head so he didn’t exhale in Frey’s face, “You work super hard.”

Godfrey scooted the tiniest bit closer, snuggling in a bit more, his eyelids feeling heavier by the moment. "No, it's good you did. And I'll study potions with you if you want."
He wouldn't make the same mistake again. He wouldn't work so hard that he let himself be blind to how hard a friend was struggling.
"Goodnight, Danny." He said, his eyes opening slightly as he made the decision to tilt his head up and forward a little, brushing the tips of their noses and mouths together for an instant. He then closed his eyes and snuggled against the firm arm beneath his pillow. There would be no bad dreams tonight.

Danny’s first kiss - though far too short and done a little too close to drifting off to be properly significant - left the boy warm and content, dreams stealing the last shred of his awareness with promises of kinder things than harsh daylight.
Somewhere in the drifting contentedness, Danny mumbled, “Night, Frey.”
