^^;;; I don't know about all of you, but I get such a feeling of dread whenever a book gets movie-fied. In some cases I like the finished work but at other times I get soooo mad.
For instance...in the Watership Down movie they merged El-Hrairah and The Black Rabbit of Inle into *one* character. ^^;;; I feel like such a dork for throwing a fit about it, but that was *so* awful. (Did I mention that this was my favorite book...?)
On the other hand, while it wasn't much like the book (which is good) the movie Howl's Moving Castle was quite cute. (Despite the fact that Calcifer was the *wrong* color...[/obsessive rant])
^^;; I'm currently dreading The Golden Compass (s'coming out in *December*. The...twenty-fourth, I think. Or the twenty-sixth.) and Inkheart. I *love* those books.
What about all yous? What are your thoughts of movie-fying? Any movie-fying jobs you liked? Didn't like? Were okay with? Any thoughts in general?

I also get the same feeling of dread. They SLAUGHTERED the Erigon book. Lore of the Rings did okay, but they left out Tom and some other cool stuff. Ella Enchanted made my eyes want to bleed. They didn't follow the true story and spirit of the book at ALL!

Agreed. Whoever decided to mangle Ella Enchanted to that degree should be *shot*. It was like bad fan fiction.

I'm not a fan of most of the books-turned-movies I've seen. I was soooo annoyed by the Lord of the Rings movies, and I refuse to even watch the Eragon movie. I freaking refuse.
Not to mention, a lot of the books-turned-movies made of Stephen King books never live up to the gore and terror of the books they take their base from. With the exception of Cujo and Pet Sematary, which were alright.
On the other hand, I really was happy with The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Those kids did good, and if anything, they added to the story, rather than took away from it. It was visually stunning, and the storyline was almost untouched (and I should know, I've read it half a zillion times, not to mention I can't wait for Prince Caspian! Hee! ) so I really can't complain about it. It was one of the few books-turned-movies that I'm actually looking forward to seeing the sequel of.

Like I did before kissing a girl for the first time--dread. Then afterwards, deep shame and disgust, with the kiss for being, well, with a girl, and with myself for going through with it.
The fact is, books-gone-movies usually suck. Sure, there are exceptions, as Tommy pointed out with Narnia, but even the ones with great acting and scenery and special effects often lose the soul of the story--like with LotR. Most viewers never knew about the Burning of the Shire, which is the real purpose of the whole trilogy--the loss of little settlements to large-scale industry.
So my vote would have to be no, rarely. Fiction is do-able, but Fantasy should be left to letters and crinkly pages and the consumption of unhealthy amounts of coffee, unless the director is willing to make very few concessions as to the plot.
Love and Vale, -LD

I'm gonna have to say that books to film isn't good. They are doing OK with HP simply because the franchise demands that movies be made, but the LOTR movies were terrible, I enjoyed the first one because I hadn't yet read the books and I still like it just as a stand alone movie. But Eragon, read the book, hated it, watched the movie, hated that too. The thing with HP is that they are now, because in the 3rd movie the screen writer could have be taken away as a test subject to doleech testing on and no one would give a rats arse, doing a better job at incorporating the solid points on the books into the movies. GOF was a great movie, OOTF was amazing in my opinion because they left out all the things that Rowling was experimenting with in the books and it really showed in the movie.
I never saw Mimsy, nor have I read the short fiction about it, I heard good things but nothing above see it if you're bored.
I hate to say it, but I liked Ella Enchanted as a movie, it was corny in a funny way but then again I haven't read the book. And I'm partially biased because I think the actress is just smokin' heart . Well, not smokin hot, but she has a very normal look that really appeals to me.
In any case, whenever I hear a movie is coming out that was based on a book, I roll my eyes. I can't stand them because when you watch the movie you can blatantly see that they're cramming everything in and a movie should flow, not rush to the ending.
Or, we should kill all the screen writers and hire competant people blaugh

Please tell me you mean OOTP. I spent three minutes trying to figure out which HP books had the initials OOTF. -LD

Well, I'd have to agree with most here, that the majority of books made into films are quite bad... It's quite unfortunate too because I might have my hopes quite high about it, only to be disappointed. I haven't seen the recent Harry Potter movie yet but apparently it is quite different to the book. The others haven't been that great either, and I always get worked up thinking bout Dumbledore; don't you guys think Richard Harris was the best? Though I guess we cant' do much about it considering he died sweatdrop
I enjoyed the LOTR movies, I think Peter Jackson did a good job of them too. 3nodding I think that with a lot of movies it's hard to expect a great job, because everyone has their own expectations and its quite impossible for the director to please everyone...

So far the only one i've seen that did follow the book well was Holes, that is due to the fact that the author actually wrote the script for the movie.
other than that, i like the HP movies, haven't read the books, *sorry not a big fan*
and on the other hand my dad said that the Lord of The Rings did follow the book a bit but not completely.
the only way i could see books making good movies is if the author has a hand in something like the script or the storyboard.

Generally, movies based on books do suck as being like the book, but if taken as a different story itself I enjoy them a lot. I actually enjoyed the Eragon movie (awesome graphics O.o), Mimzy (frickin weird kids movie), LOTR (my precious..), Harry Potter, Ella Enchanted (it was cute, OK?), Holes... All the movies y'all have talked about XD
Except...Watership Down...that movie SCARED me. It traumatized me xp That movie was evil! Evil!!! Mean, mean bunnies! crying
There's one book that I can think of that I read and got to see the movies of...Man on Fire. That book was VERY different from the movie. First, the guy was white, in Italy and I think the book trook place in the 60's... Also...he LIVED at the end. OH! and the little girl died.
Evil messed up movie...I didn't enjoy the adaption of that book obviously XD

I like some movies that come from books but mostly I would prefer If they left the books alone. I saw Eragon it was nothing like the book.

-takes a deep, calming breath- I agree with most of your points, atleast for the movies I've actually SEEN, but there's one movie in particular that made me want to tear out my hair and shove it down my throat. >.<
I doubt any of you have read Blood and Chocolate, but maybe a few of you have seen the movie.
Alright, them changing practically the entire story, like how she met the human boy, her relation to the group of rouge male werewolves, and the bout of insanity she thought she was experiencing? I could deal with that. Kinda.
For some reason, though, I just can't get over the fact that she ended up with the human boy. She was NOT supposed to end up with him! XP In the book, he freaking SHOT her. >.< The different ending of the movie changed the entire feel/message of the story!!
...>.> -more calm breathing- My apologies for the rant.

burning_eyes Ella enchanted was soooooo bad! Harry Potter and the S. Stone was pretty good, so was the live action Lord of the Rings. Remember, Lord of the Rings has been made into very bad cartoon movies. I think you have to look at them as two different animals. In books you have a lot of time for world-builing, but in movies you can instantly show what things look like. It's a trade-off that is very difficult.

I absolutely hate book movies. They seem to miss all the best moments and then cut out half the story and on top of that they generally end up making sucky character choices. A few movie books escape this but not the rest. I wish they would either make the freaking trilogy that just about every book needs to be to include everything or just stop and GTFO out of book. T.T Leave them be, they don't want to be touched. gonk

I usually don't mind movies based on books. The Harry Potter movies weren't that bad except for gof. I agree about Ella Enchanted. I loved the book and I've read something like four or five times now because I love it so much. They destroyed it with the movie. It didn't follow the book at all! I'm kind of looking forward to seeing The Golden Compass. Plus one of my favorite actresses is in it. But I won't be able to judge it since I never finished the book. sweatdrop I didn't finish it by the time it was due back at the library and I think I lost my copy of it...
