Hey everyone,
I am really interested in starting an advanced thread here, but I was hoping to run it a bit different than many of the other RPs I have seen here. I am in the process of creating an entire fantasy world from scratch, with details being added daily. I eventually want to have a running world in which the quests of one group of heroes affects the quests of heroes to come. Some day I may use this world, and the stories you create, as the back setting for other role plays I create both on and offline.
The way I want to run this world, as far as Gaia is concerned is to have each thread be an episode. I don't mean having multiple threads running at one time, although I may do that at some point in the future. What I am proposing is to have quests or groups of quests which create a story grouped together, each with its own "ending." Now, that is not to say that the stories of individual characters would be over with at the end of the story, in fact I would encourage those interested to carry over into my following threads if the story allows for it. (Of course this may not be possible if say the following thread takes place 500 after the previous one.)
Since I am trying to go as in depth as I can into having each town and point of interest in this world to have its own character, feel, and history, I would hope that those wishing to participate would show the same interest in their character creation. It may be a little while before I am fully prepared to start the first thread so i thought I would announce my idea and let those whom it intrigues start thinking about their characters.
At this point in time I have one continent and its surroundings built. This currently includes five main countries as well as tons of other points of interest.
A brief version of the back story I would be using going into the thread is as follows:
A long time ago on the continent of Noria there was a great war. An army of sinister warriors from the northern continent invaded restlessly into its once peaceful kingdoms. The war lord from the north was said to be a man of great power, though some said he was not a man at all. All of Noria's people gathered together in hope to make peace and drive the invaders out of their country. Among those who fought were the elves of the great wood, the dwarves of the western mountains, the gnomes of the deep ground, the orcish tribes of the east, and many many brave men.
The war raged on for what seemed like an eternity until the fateful day that Valthar Alundrias, king of the nothern most kingdom in Noria, Tama'rtha, rose up to unite the kingdoms in hopes for one final stand. Valthar had his priests set out on a pilgrimage in order to beseech the gods to send thier holy aid. It is said that the gods answered by bestowing an unimaginable power to the lands most dedicated mages who gathered together under the leadership of King Alundrias.
Though much is debated about the events that followed, the consiquences were undeniable. Alundrias led his vast army in one swoop through the incoming hordes of nightmarish creatures to the border between Noria and the Northern Continent. It was here that the group of high mages called on the power which the gods had spoken unto them.
It is said the earth shook and a bright like erupted and pierced through the heavens. When the dust settled, the great rift appeared. Where once stood a battlefield, now stood nothingness. A giant rift between the two continents now separated the two masses of land by many many miles. Those men who remained now stood on a barrier of mountains above a sea which flowed down into the impossible depths of the rift...never ending.

There is much more to the story, and many details which I left out for sake of just introducing the idea to all of you. The story I wish to create would take place long after the above when this story is talked about as a legend.
Here is what I would need from those of you who are both interested and dedicated enough to partake in this story:
I would want all characters to be original and limited to this thread. This keeps people from just using their favorite character with powerful items and spells they had obtained from other threads in which they very well may have been the authors of. I would hope that people would also be less inclined to complain if something unfortunate were to happen to their character.
Also, since these characters would be specific to this world they should be a living breathing member of it, meaning back stories are encouraged to be connected to its kingdoms, or surrounding areas. Characters may also create back stories that connect them from the start. The richer the history of the character the more interesting it is to role play. I plan on giving my best as the story teller so long as I receive the best from its characters.
I wanted to begin the discussion of this to see what people thought. Rough ideas for character types could be posted here, or sent to me. Feel free to ask me questions, or to discuss the idea amongst yourselves. It may be a long process but I am hoping for the best.

Before i go about creating a character outline i have a few questions. How exactly do the elves of this world work? Do they age the same as humans, or do they age much slower. What are there attitudes to the other races. Do half-elves exist, and it so are they accepted by full elves. And of course, just to make sure, average hight of elves.

The current plan I was working with is that elves would behave much in the same way as they do in many fantasy worlds. I decided on a 1 to 10 ratio, obviously, with human years as a base, I know that is much smaller than some people like to use but I didn't want the elves to be immortals or demigods. Elves are widely accepted across the continent, but such as is the nature of people there are those who hold a certain disdain towards elves as there are people with the same thoughts amongst all the races. There are half elves but as far as extra lifespan I had figured about 1 to 1.5. Giving them a little bit on the average human but not much due to the dilluting of the pure elven blood.
Elves would also as a general rule be slightly shorter in stature to the average humans, but there are always exceptions. Half elves would be the same height as the average human.
I had planned on having elves be more adept with magic, and with proper training a half elf would have a more natural affinity with it. However there is a group of high mages who hold power over the mage academy and there are quite a few humans among their ranks, so sometimes it is the luck of the draw. As with real life there are no definates.
Of course, the world is a work in progress so I would be more than happy to hear anyone's ideas before actually putting the story into motion.

Well, as far as on the continent, in general no one race hates another race. But there are people, just like in real life, who may not care for people of other races for various reasons. Some humans might not like elves because perhaps they believe that the elves think that they are better than humans. Some elves might believe that they are better than humans. But like I said just like in real life there is no rule as to who has to like what. Your character can be as ignorant or as accepting as you would like them to be.

Johnny Tokyo There is much more to the story, and many details which I left out for sake of just introducing the idea to all of you. The story I wish to create would take place long after the above when this story is talked about as a legend...If you would have read all of the first two posts you would have read this quote. I plan on starting the story in the Imperial City before any big conflict appears. That way it would give the characters a chance to meet up and form some sort of relationship before continuing with the main story.

This sounds great. It can take a while to recruit for an RP like this and I'm confident that it will indeed be an advanced RP. If you do decide for sure to start it, please PM me so that I can mark your new thread as Advanced.

Wow, thank you for taking a look at this!
For anyone who is still thinking about joining I should have the list of the countries and some brief back story on each coming up this week. I have to move apartments tomorrow, but I will have about a month before fall semester starts so I should be able to really start materializing the world in the next few weeks. Thank you for your patience, and please feel free to post here to show your interest so I can get an idea of people who may want to join.
Thanks again School of Dedicated RPers, I appreciate it.
