Hey everyone! I know this thread looks daunting, but I promise if you read on you're in for a really good story! This is my latest writing project--a serialized fiction that updates every Monday, sometimes even with art and other perks. If you would find the time to read and leave me a comment or two, I would appreciate it greatly. biggrin

The series is called "Dark Magical Orchestra", and is a historical fiction with a little action, occult horror, mystery, and humor. I try to add a new chapter each week, and each one takes around 10 minutes to read.

Threads are hard to read, and I don't want to load down gaia by posting all my images. If you want the story in its original format, you can simply visit DMO's home page, www.darkmagic.theanimearsenal.com. If you prefer to stay in Gaialand, that's fine too. The whole story is posted here, word for word.

If it's not too much trouble, please take a look and leave me a reply or two. I really appreciate it! biggrin

Prologue

Long ago, in an age of strange arts and arcane magic and dark secrets, there reigned over our world a single Lord, the Most Dark Emperor, whose line carried the fate of the earth in its hands for over three hundred years. A master of the myriad secrets of life and death, light and shadow, truth and lies, the Emperor and his descendants held sway over the continent of Europe and large portions of Asia with an iron hand.

However, time renders all things to naught, and as day breaking from a long night, the dark age of the so-called "Renaissance Empire" was ended. The line of the Most Dark Emperor was destroyed, and his subjects scattered to the corners of the earth. As the victors over the Renaissance Empire slowly erased its existence from history, they forgot to purge a single remaining link--the last of a chain of direct descendants of the Imperial Line.

In the sparsely populated recesses of Romania, the family Garidion--last true descendants of the Renaissance Empire--have lived for generations, cultivating their magics, searching out allies, and preparing for the day when an Imperial heir will once more rule over the world.

This is the legend of Cosette Garidion, the last heir to her family's dark legacy...

------------------------------------------------------------------

First Movement: Dark Magical Houseguests

Deep recessed in the mountains of Eastern Europe, a quaint villa stood, cut off from humanity. It is here, in the year 1950, where one might find the abode of young Cosette Garidion. On this calm, fair-weathered day of her eighteenth year, she was to be found reading alone in her study.

She turned another page of the musty grimoire on the desk in front of her, then gave a sigh of something not unlike boredom. Her white hair fell across her pale back, over a black and raspberry-colored dress handed down through the ages of her illustrious family. Her golden-hazel eyes, however, shone with a sharpness and force of will that mere boredom could not allay.

On a piece of paper beside, her, she was making various calculations, notes, and thoughts. Every few moments, she would stand up and walk over to a large board, covered with an ornate map of the world, study it for a bit, then return to her previous seat to continue making notes.

Upon her board were various pieces, like soldiers or chariots or kings. Even monsters and eldritch creatures loomed among them. Every few moves, after consulting her books and papers extensively, Cosette would move a few pieces, and slide a dial on the table forward once notch.

Cosette began moving more rapidly now, adding and removing pieces, replacing them with deep red pieces from a chest nearby. After a hundred trips to the table and back, with four hours of work behind her, the dial at last read 2050 as Cosette removed the last non-red piece from the board.

With a huff of frustration, she scuttled the red pieces off the board and replaced them into the chest, returning the board to its previous state, and resetting the dial to 1950, its initial value.

“A hundred years is too long to rebuild the empire.” She sighed, looking up at a picture which hung above the study’s old mantle. It was an oil painting of the Roman Emperor, Caligula, a figure Cosette still traced her family lines back to, and whose legacy it had been her life’s dream to restore.

It was too early for a fire, but she would probably have to put one together soon. The spring still wasn’t warm enough to stay up too late without proper heat. Perhaps she could call Narshe to do it for her. Servants must have some use, right?

As she was considering calling upon the one other soul within fifty miles, she was met with the sound of a loud crash, followed by the whining voice of her compatriot. “Ohhh, Coseeeeeette! Heeeeeelp meeeee!”

There was not a sense of urgency in the words, and they were drawn out in an annoyingly blithe singsong way. Even after she heard the crashing downstairs and felt the shaking of the old villa, she couldn’t be too bothered to hurry.

She traipsed down the red carpeted hallway and descended the staircase, stopping to brush some dust from a vase, before another shockwave rumbling through the house almost knocked her from her feet.

“What is it now, Narshe?” Cosette called back, in a voice that didn’t attempt to hide a single ounce of annoyance.

From the door to the basement, another young-looking woman appeared. She had reddish eyes behind thick spectacles, and a light brown cloak over her blue skirt and shirt. Disarrayed brown hair was sticking out at odd angles, and her glasses sat slightly astray. Her figure was tall, but full in the important places, making her seem much more mature than the somewhat childlike Cosette.

“Ah, well, there was a problem with my binding spell.” She shrugged, straightening her glasses.

“What did you set loose this time?” Cosette’s lips curled into a disdainful sneer.

“Hmm… a Destroyer?” Narshe scratched the back of her head with a laugh. “I needed demon tears for my experiment.”

You can’t bind a Destroyer.” Cosette’s mouth hung open a bit, giving her servant a disbelieving look. “What sort of fool... why didn’t you just summon a Mourner, they practically give away tears.”

Narshe gave a coy look, “Well the summoning would have involved us performing a hedonistic ritual under the full moon, and the last time you said that it made you really uncomforta-”

“That never happened, and stop involving me in your decadent fantasies. There are twelve ways to summon Mourners, why do you only know that one?” Cosette’s hands rested on her hips in a kind of pout.

At about that moment, the house shook again, and with a colossal force, a terrific beast smashed through the wall which separated the main villa from Narshe’s laboratories.

A huge beast, around eight feet tall burst into the foyer of the villa, its skin was a dark brown, and reeked of sulfur, while red hair ran down its head and back. Large green eyes glanced hastily around the room, while feral teeth clicked a few times, eager for something to devour.

“You there,” Cosette pointed to the beast in a rather imperialistic manner, “desist immediately!”

The demon gave her a critical look, then heaved a three hundred year-old statue of one of Cosette’s grandfathers over its head and lobbed it at the girl. Tipping her head to the side impassively, Cosette dodged as the statue whizzed by a hair’s breadth to the left.

“How dare you defy me?” She pouted, stamping her foot.

Narshe looked up at the demon towering over her and gave a little shriek, as she took a step back. The demon grabbed her with a swift movement, preventing her escape, and lifted her over its head.

“Oh, Coseeeeette! It’s got meeeee!” Narshe whined.

“That sounds like the result of a critical error on your part.” Cosette sneered. The impact of the statue against the villa wall had turned the old relic nearly to dust, and the girl was kneeled down, collecting fragments of the statue into her hand.

“That’s true...” Narshe mumbled. With a snapping sound, her whole body dissolved into a red mist, which floated out of the demon’s fingers just as it was about to crunch down on her head.

Cosette walked calmly down the stairs, “listen here, listen here.” She got the demon’s attention. “You’ve got a lot of nerve to break into my palace and start destroying my things, but I can kind of respect that.” She held out a hand to signal that she wasn’t done yet. The demon scratched its claws into the ground beneath its feet, splintering the old wood, yet it listened to her speak.

“Actually, it’s my villa.” The red mist collected itself together and resumed the form of Narshe.

“Yes, but I own you.” Cosette scowled back. She was walking in a circle around the demon now, as she spoke. “I realize you like to break stuff, but really, you could be more polite. At least it was great-great-great..." She paused to count greats, "great-great-grandfather Calval. I didn’t really like him anyway.” She paused at the spot where the statue used to stand and looked down with a slight smirk, before resuming her pacing.

“Anyway, point in point.” The girl continued, “You like to break stuff, and I have things that I want broken. Why don’t we work out something more beneficial to both sides?”

“Your suggestion presents no gain for me, mortal. Whether I destroy you and your things or some other’s, it’s all the same for me. I can, and will, destroy you first, then move on to the others.” The demon spoke in a raspy, infernal tone, and it lifted a massive fist to crush Cosette in a single blow.

“There’s a certain critical flaw in your plan.” Cosette held up a finger and gave a slight smirk, as the demon’s fist fell above her.

In a flash of light, the creature’s hand shot back, burning in white fire, repelled by some invisible force.

“A circle of bone shall bind Calamity.” A trickle of white limestone dust from the ruined statue fell from Cosette’s hands, which she clapped together in an attempt to clean off. Surely enough, a ring of the substance followed the path she had walked, a complete circle around the demon. “Now that you’re in my power, the table turns, destroyer. Will you still refuse me?”

“I thought you said that Destroyers couldn’t be bound...” Narshe made a thoughtful gesture, biting one of her long, red fingernails.

“I said you can’t bind a Destroyer. For me, it’s a paltry feat.” Cosette tossed her hair back, laughing. “I’m a descendant of King Solomon, after all.”

The demon roared in anger, slamming its fists several more times against its mystic prison, before curling up upon the floor and nursing its wounds.

“Narshe.” Cosette turned to her accomplice. “Bring me a vessel, and some rings.”

“Ah, right away, mistress.” Narshe headed off.

“And don’t call me ‘mistress’.” Cosette’s yell chased her off.

“Release me now, and I will leave you in peace.” The demon spoke again, in as civil a tone as a Destroyer can manage. If you bind me, you shall come to dearly regret it, mortal. My master is the Archdemon Knale, a twelfth-ranked sovereign of the pit, and reserves dear tortures to those interfering with her servants.”

“Consider your offer considered... and declined.” Cosette shrugged, “If your master had disciplined you well enough to kill me rather than listen to my speech, perhaps I would be afraid of her.”

Narshe returned, carrying a set of polished bone bangles in one hand, and the lifeless body of a what appeared to be a young girl over her shoulder.

“This was a really fun one.” She dumped the girl on the floor, licking her fingers. Two bite marks were clearly visible on the girl’s neck, as well as various other places on her body. Narshe knelt down and affixed the bangles to the girl’s wrists, ankles, and neck.

“You really are a despicable creature, you know that?” Cosette stepped past Narshe and grabbed hold of the dead girl’s arm, tugging. The corpse moved a few inches across the floor, despite decent effort from Cosette.

“Move her over there.” The young Cosette nodded her head toward the other end of the room, dropping the corpse’s arm in as dignified a manner as she could manage.

“As you wish, mistress.” Narshe giggled, hefting the form of the girl with one hand, and carrying it across the room.

“Now, we can do this the easy way...” Cosette addressed the demon, pointing an imperialistic finger at it, “or the long way.”

“Don’t presume to torture me, pathetic mortal. That is a glory reserved for Lord Knale alone.” The demon struck again, succeeding in injuring itself even more badly.

“No, I can’t force you to do anything, of course...” Cosette laughed. “But I know what demons like you fear the most.”

“I fear nothing!” The demon struck again, blasting itself with another crash of white flames.

“Precisely, precisely. I’m just going to leave you here alone until you decide to join me. Let me know when the boredom gets to you, and we’ll talk again.” Cosette made a motion with her fingers for Narshe to follow, and the two left.

Five minutes later...

“Damn you, mortal! I concede!” The demon bellowed, and Cosette and Narshe popped back out from the other room.

“Hehe… even weaker than you imagined.” Narshe snickered.

“Do what you like, wretch, just let me out of here!” The demon roared.

“Of course. Once you inhabit this body, you’ll be free to move around as you like.” Cosette tipped her head again to Narshe, and the vampire lifted the girl’s body into the air, tossing it to the demon.

Throwing its head back, the demon seemed to dematerialize as its essence was absorbed into the corpse. In a bright flash of light, then total silence, the corpse collapsed onto the ground, immobile.

With a twitch, it moved, then set its feet on the ground. As though pulled up by marionette strings, the body rose to a full standing position. The form of the girl was there, but it was the demon’s aura glowing behind her, a radiant power impossible to ignore.

“Now to destroy you both for this indiscretion...” the voice was a bit higher pitched, but still a somewhat low mismatch for the body the demon inhabited. It began to walk towards Cosette, stepping over the circle with ease.

“Stop there, servant.” Cosette ordered. The body of the demon halted automatically at her command.

“What is this?!” The demon strained against some cosmic force, but her body seemed unwilling to obey.

“A ghoul can’t disobey the commands of the vampire who creates it.” Narshe shrugged, tapping her neck to remind the demon of the bite marks which covered her body.

“Or the master of that vampire.” Cosette smirked coolly at the bound demon before her. “These rings of bone will bind you to the body, which only obeys our commands. So then, so far as no harm comes to me, Narshe, or our possessions, you are free to do as you wish within the grounds of this manor. Consider yourself dismissed, slave.”

“Raaaaaaaaah!!!” The demon roared and swung her fist, which stopped a hair’s breadth from Cosette’s face. “Damn you, witch!”

“Ah, I’m sure we’ll be having lots of fun together, my new pet...” Narshe licked her lips, snapping back into a red mist, which whisked out of the room and back into her laboratories. “Come here, and I’ll make you cry some tears for me.”

Cosette laughed a high pitched laugh, and waved the demon off. Despite its curses and cries of protest, it followed Narshe to the south end of the villa.

Back in her study, Black Cosette drew another piece from the chest beside her table, and placed a red destroyer demon beside her own piece on the board.

ah i was going to say but i wasn't sure, "no posting links to other sites if you want it critiqued?" rather simply post what you want critiqued in the forums? oh, i'm bored by the way.

I feel I owe you an apology, I completely missed the Announcement when I came in. Most of my other guilds have conversations and events as their announcements, so I tend to mentally block them out. sweatdrop

If I did that every time someone slipped up, I'm afraid it would just be me and Lion here, staring each other down to see who screws up first, and Muse trying to diffuse the tension.

((Actually, that might be kind of fun to watch...))

I like it. The girl Cosette is a bit to mean for my taste, but it works. Sometimes at the end of dialogue there's a "c". It confused me. Also there's too many "great's". Chop it in half, at least. Other then that, it's very witty and well written. Please post more.

I fixed that "greating" problem you mentioned biggrin

Cosette seems a little mean, but she's really a tsundere (a character whose softer side opens up after some time), so if you stick with her you'll see more personality from her.

The 'c' is what Microsoft word's "..." looks like when you copy and paste it into a BBC interface. sweatdrop I think I fixed most of them, but if you notice more, please point them out.

Dark Magical Family Ties

A heavy knock rang against the front door of the Villa Vivikadvra, the abode of Cosette Garidion, Narshe Landraner, and Hylie Mignon. The afternoon air settled heavily upon the sleepy mansion, where not a sound was to be heard save the tinkerings of Narshe in her laboratory.

Another knock fell upon the door, and this one captured the attention of the vampire, who walked slowly out of her workroom to check who could possibly be calling.

Narshe peered through the door’s peephole to witness a young girl in full military brass, surrounded by an escort of four soldiers. Eyes widening, the vampire snapped into a red mist and whisked up to her room on the second floor, quickly changing her clothes into something more suitable for high-company.

Whisking herself back down to the foyer, she quickly pulled the door open, bowing to her guests. “Ah, Mistress Etlinde. Welcome, and please forgive the delay.”

“Quite alright, Narshe.” Etlinde led the way in, and her escort followed in military step. “And where is cousin Cosette?”

“Ah, she is… um… busily preparing to meet you, naturally.” Narshe explained in a rather unconvincing manner. “Let me go and fetch her.”

Narshe ran up the stairs of the foyer, knocking on the door of Cosette’s study once, then again. A whiff of smoke curled up from below the door, and, as her nose caught the scent, Narshe gave a deep cough mixed with an exasperated sigh, and shoved the door open.

“Narshe…” Cosette was lying on a pile of cushions, smoking from a long, old fashioned pipe-an heirloom passed down through her family. “What is the meaning of this intrusion?” Her voice seemed a little light, and did not come from any direction in particular.

“Cosette!” Narshe hissed, coughing and putting a sleeve over her mouth to filter out the smoke which was clouding the room. “Your cousin Etlinde is here to see you!”

“I can’t be bothered with that.” Cosette rolled onto her back and took another deep breath from her pipe. “Can’t you see that I’m in a higher state of mind right now?”

“Honestly, you’re going to ruin your beautiful, young body with that.” Narshe snatched the pipe away in a quick motion and doused the flame in it with a snap of her fingers, hiding it away in her cloak.

Cosette made a grabbing motion for the pipe in the opposite direction, but still managed to come quite close to snatching it back. “Narshe! The betaking of witches weed is a long standing and important tradition in my family! Why, when my mother was your master-”

“She expressed to me a desire that you escape the habit. Besides, my own research shows that Ritherwhyte improves magical ability by a mere 2%.” Narshe noted. “Hardly worth ruining yourself over.”

“Bah…” Cosette stood up shakily, “I suppose I should meet Etlinde then.” She walked in a crooked path to the door, but the whole room seemed to tilt for her, getting her to her destination safely.

“At least change into something presentable.” Narshe called, but there was no reply.

---

Cosette tripped as carefully as she could down the steps of the foyer. “And to what do I owe the honor, Mien Fuhrer?” Her voice rang with sarcasm.

Etlinde’s medals flashed dimly in the soft light of the manor, as she turned to face Cosette. At her sides were two pistols and a saber, and a cuff around her arm displayed proudly the swastika of the Third Reich. Golden hair fell from below her beret cap, and her blue eyes shone with the brightness and sharpness of someone with grand dreams and dangerous ambition.

“Just a little business, Cosette. Something I thought you would be interested in hearing.” Etlinde’s voice was still that of a young woman, but it was a voice used to giving orders and commands-a little too strong to be polite.

“Well,” Narshe appeared from the hallway behind Cosette, “why don’t we head into the drawing room, and we can discuss matters there, hm?” She smiled her best hostess smile, and walked ahead of Cosette to open the door.

Sitting at the head and foot of a large, yet not distant, old-fashioned oak table, the two cousins stared each other down.

“So, dearest cousin Etlinde, do tell me of this interesting news you have.” Cosette sat with her elbows resting on the old table, with her chin in her hands. Her eyes looked larger and glassier than normal, and her smile showed unnaturally sharp, white teeth, and stretched across her face like that of the Cheshire Cat.

“I imagined that you might see me coming, oracle that you are.” Etlinde shot to her cousin. “I didn’t expect to find you washed up like this. Is that how the family heiress spends her days?”

“I don’t waste my time divining minor events.” Cosette answered in a casual tone. “And I can’t expect you to understand the affairs of refined life. After all, blood between us is so thin, it’s only notes in some forgotten genealogist’s research. You’re the antithesis of nobility.” She smiled even wider, and the whole room seemed to be grinning with her.

Etlinde turned her head and gave a small cough of disgust, “I’d rather be an ignoble leader than a recluse with nothing but a collection of stale legacies.”

“Oh, is that how it is?” Cosette’s eyes widened and the candles in the room flashed black. Etlinde’s hand was on the hilt of her saber.

“Now, now… girls, let’s not be unladylike.” Narshe held up her hands to stop them.

After a few seconds, they both sat back, relaxing again as the lighting returned to normal and a clink of steel sounded at the release of the Fuhrer’s saber. Etlinde spoke up first.

“My intelligence has gathered some reports of a certain locus–we thought it some sort of relic, and decided to query your expertise.” Etlinde explained, scratching her chin for a moment.

“Oh really? Looking for some Ancient weapons to fill out your arsenal?” Cosette said offhandedly. “I guess your Thule Society couldn’t make anything of it?”

“The society is… occupied with other projects.” Etlinde conceded.

“Ah, I see.” Cosette sat back, her voice still ringing strangely. “They have to fight alongside the regular soldiers. I guess the South Americas are a harsher front than your daddy expected. It’s a surprise you haven’t set up anything noteworthy, considering how you’ve been there for, oh, how many years now?”

“You, with a complete working staff of one-” Etlinde pointed an accusing finger at Narshe, “have no idea of the work involved in keeping and training soldiers, military tactics, outfitting, collecting intelligence, or even commanding the meanest of battalions! Don’t presume to lecture me!”

“Why you!” Cosette leaned forward, and the whole room seemed to get darker, as her eyes grew wider and her pupils disappeared. The wide smile stretched even further across her face, clearly displaying her ivory-white teeth.

Etlinde stood, jumped back onto her chair, stepped onto the table, and drew a pistol, cocking it and leveling it at Cosette’s head in one fluid movement.

At the same moment, the entire room converged upon Etlinde. The chandelier snaked down into long, vicious claws hovering just before her eyes, While the table grew tendrils to grasp at her legs.

The two of them stood like that for a long moment.

“Ah… it looks like time for tea.” Narshe gave a shallow laugh.

Cosette and Etlinde stared at each other for another moment, then at the same instant, Etlinde uncocked her pistol, and Cosette flopped back in her chair, the room brightening back to normal as though nothing had changed. Both of them burst out laughing for a long moment.

Narshe sighed relief, and clapped her hands twice. Through the back door, Hylie entered, carrying a tea tray. She was wearing a frilly maid’s costume which did nothing to allay the murderous, daemonic aura that radiated from her whole being. The costume, being Narshe’s, looked somewhat silly on the less generously-proportioned Hylie.

Setting the tea on the table and pouring two cups as unpleasantly as possible, the demon slipped back out of the room.

“I know you have eclectic tastes, Cosette. So tell me about the tea. It’s not anything I’ve smelled before.” Etlinde sniffed the tea, which had a strong smell of cats.

“It’s called Ziphlin blend, from a small apothecary a few cities over.” Cosette noted. “They tell me it helps to cultivate magical ability.” She sipped the tea lightly, though it was still rather hot.

“Magic… seems like a waste of time to me.” Etlinde shrugged, completely ignoring a venomous look from her cousin. “No, that doesn’t mean you can have mine.” She cut off Narshe, who was just opening her mouth. “I presume it has normal properties too, like quenching my thirst?”

“Naturally.”

“So, what I was about to say earlier…” Etlinde continued, “is that we have come into possession of this site, and want advice on how to best use it strategically.”

“And I can assume you brought me something more than a description?” Cosette asked casually.

“Of course.” Etlinde snapped her fingers, and one of her soldiers stepped in, carrying a brown envelope. She took the envelope and slid it across the table to Cosette. “You’ll find high resolution photographs of the site in there.”

“Ah, the wonders of modern technology.” Narshe crowed. “One essence sample would tell us more than a thousand pictures.”

“As I mentioned…” Etlinde muttered, “my specialists are indispensable at the moment.”

“Right.” Cosette murmured, thumbing through the pictures. “It looks like an old native site, not Ancient. Probably no weapons. I could raise a platoon of banes from it, but I don’t think that your human soldiers will feel too well about fighting alongside them.”

Etlinde sighed and retrieved the packet. “I expected as much.”

“By the way, cousin, I may have a deal for you.” Cosette rolled one of her earrings in between her fingers thoughtfully.

“What’s that?” Etlinde listened stoically.

“I have reports that you’re still funding your father’s little experiments…” Cosette began, and Etlinde’s eyes grew a slight bit wider. “Yes, I might have more staff than you imagine. Scary hm? Anyway, I don’t really care about the nature of the program, but those sort of procedures… they produce a certain kind of malice that’s hard to find and collect.”

“It would be good for my research if we could obtain some essence samples from your laboratories.” Narshe noted.

“And in exchange?” The young Fuhrer’s brow furrowed a bit.

“Maybe there’s more to your ruins than meets the eye…” Cosette shrugged her shoulders.

“Naturally, it would come to something like this.” Etlinde leaned forward on the table. “Here’s the deal. You research the site. Depending on the usefulness of what comes out, we discuss your samples.”

“Hmm…” Cosette assented. “I’ll think it over.”

“Well then.” Etlinde straightened her beret and stood. “We have other affairs in Europe as well, so I must ask your leave.”

“We appreciate your visit, as always.” Narshe gave another smile, and showed Etlinde to the door.

“So, Narshe, what do you make of that?” Cosette asked.

“Definitely go with the normal tea at the next family reunion?” Narshe pondered, then corrected her self after a glare from Cosette. “Oh, the site… hm, I think the question is this: Do we want the samples, which will put us over an army of banes? or do you want the ruin, which will likely yield one of the Elder Native Gods to serve you?”

“That’s one way to put it.” Cosette thought aloud. “And why not take both?”

“Betray your cousin?” Narshe considered, “that’s rather predictable, isn’t it?”

“True, but in the end, our goals are the same, its inevitable that we become enemies. Betrayal is just a card that one of us will play first.” The girl shrugged. “But then again, it’s not worth it at this point either, and I’d hate to disappoint by doing anything too predictable.”

“So, do we leave for South America?” Narshe queried.

“In time, Narshe. In time.” Cosette stepped forward Narshe, her eyes glazing over again. “Before that…” she reached slowly under Narshe’s cloak.

“Mistressssssss…” Narshe licked her fangs.

Cosette snatched back her pipe out of the vampire’s cloak. “I have to finish my meditation. Go make yourself useful elsewhere, servant.” The whole house seemed to get out of her way as she walked straight back to her study, ignoring walls, closed doors, and an entire story of the manor.
