Fantasy or sci-fi? Why?
  Fantasy. There's friggin dragons!
Sci-fi. The dragons were created by science.
Fantasy. It's set in another world.
Sci-fi. She explains how they got there from Earth.
  Fantasy. I'm stubborn that way.
  Sci-fi. Cuz she said so.

Hey, I've read Anne McCaffrey's series the Dragonriders of Pern (which her son Todd is expanding), and I wondered who else here has read it. It is an incredible cross between fantasy and science-fiction, though she insists it is scifi and I agree. Please, if you've read any of the books or want to know more about them, say something. Post, pm, whatever. I need to discuss these books, because they are just so goo.

well, don't take this personally, but that series bored me out of my mind. i think it was definatly more fantasy than sf, but it was very well thought out. anyways, maybe it's because i only read the first book, but i couldn't bring myself to read any others.

That would definately be why. Dragonsdawn is the book with the most sci-fi, and it's my favorite. After that comes All the Weyrs of Pern, and the Harper Hall Trilogy. Once you get past The White Dragon it has a lot of sci-fi.

If I remember correctly I enjoyed the series enough to read it through. It set in a very well thought out world. I enjoyed The Dragon Singer series more.

I liked most of the books in that series. Some weren't so great but overall I love the series. Sci-fi or Fantasy I don't know which but I like the fantasy parts better... Then again the sci-fi tech was really well written into the story so I liked those parts also.

I know there is quite a bit of sci-fi in this series, but I've always thought of it more as fantasy. I'm not quite sure why, but whenever I was reading it, even the science-y bits, I always thought of it as fantasy.

No matter how it is classified, it is a great series. I love it! I don't know if I have read all of them, however, as I find it a little confusing what the order of the books are. But I still love them! heart heart

The series is most definately, by definition, science fiction.

It is a well written series that doesn't belabor the science but that doesn't mean that it isn't there. Since the underpinings for everything that happens is based upon science, it doesn't matter whether or not it's belabored.

The thing that sets the Dragonrider series apart from most science fiction is that McCaffery spends more time creating great characters who are fully realized than she does with the science. Something that we don't see all that often in science fiction, but see a lot in Fantasy since as a genera, Fantasy doesn't need to establish science but needs to establish believable characters to hang the fantasy story around.

I guess they were good. I've read the first 3, and I really only liked the first one a lot. I mean, the other two were interesting, but only while reading the first one could I not put the book down.

The first one was great, and the other 2 I read were ok. Could've been better though.

Hmm. i haven't checked on this in a while. Yay! People have read it. I agree with many points saying that some books were boring...because they kind of were. I like it because it is believable, and it doesn't stress the science to point where there's no plot, only science.

To be honest, I have to agree with you. While many McCaffrey books are very good and worth the read, this series did not hold my interest. It was to technical and dry for my taste, although my parents (who are also avid fantasy/sci-fi readers) loved it. The concept is fascinating, the storytelling needs work. However, I did read more than the first book and I though the first two books of the Dragonsinger trilogy were ok.

I really enjoyed the Haper Hall subset, and the first three books, but after that I lost interest.

Does Todd emphasize the science more than Anne did?

Anne McCaffrey is a bit dry, and quite a few books in the series are very similar to each other- enough to make me question if I've read it before, when I haven't.
However, it does pick up somewhere around The Dolphins of Pern and I found it much more interesting after that. Currently I'm rather enjoying Todd McCaffrey's continuation of the series. I find him to be a much more engaging author.

I must say that the Acorna series co-written by McCaffrey was one of my all-time favorites, though the whole "Acorna's Children" and so on just lost my interest entirely.

I began this series as a young adult (around age 14 or so I think.) I agree that it is not earth shattering writing or unheard of original but as it is written as light fantasy (or science fiction) I don't think that is required.
I LOVE these books; some more than others. The Harper Hall trilogy and The White Dragon are my favorites. I agree The Dolphins of Pern was more engaging than the middle of the series.
However I personally do NOT care for Todd McCaffrey's writing style at all. He seems to be completely disregarding the magical character backstory and development that Anne McCaffrey fostered in this series (and alot of her other work) I haven't even read the newest of the series and don't plan to buy the ones written solely by Todd.

I've read the Dragon Singer trilogy, but that's it. Her world is well thought out, but it doesn't grab you the way some books does. It's a bit boring, truth be told.

I agree that the Harper Hall subset and The White Dragon were very good. I think that the books can be dry at times, but Anne obviosly creates believable characters.

I think this series is definately science fiction because Anne describes the sciences necessary to get the people to Pern and to create the dragons. I do enjoy how Anne doesn't lay on the science so much that the story gets lost.

I also like the Acorna series books co-authored by Anne. They are engaging books that I couldn't put down. I loved every minute of reading them.
