It has come to my attention that this Music & Arts forum has an irregular per portion of Music to Arts. Thus I am rectifying that error with a classic "Favorite Genre/Band/Performer" thread. Also known as the d**k measuring contest of music enthusiasts. Sure it may appear like I'm about to go off on a tangent justifying this point, but guess again.

So Here Are THE RULES :

-NO overt insulting of one another's interests irregardless of whether or not you are concerned that your peers may not have functioning ears.

-Please Clarify whether this is a music G/B/P (I can't believe I have/get to type this)is something that you only listen to when stoned. If you don't understand why this is a rule, then you've never run out of weed before attending a friend's "Concert" only to find the beautiful music you once enjoyed to be fifteen minutes of a jackass who couldn't figure out the B chord if it had it's d**k in his mouth, respectively. MOVING ON

-If you hate some kind of G/B/P you can voice this opinion, but for the sake of maintaining order, be rational about your disgust. By this I mean mention that you dislike something casually and if there is someone else who utterly loathes it, then take your un-adulterated eternally wretching hate to a private message style area.

-Finally this is something of a pet peeve of mine, if you can elaborate about your undying love for a specific G/B/P please do for the sake of conversation. I don't want this to be a fifteen post thread of I like blah, then it's a ghost town.

Mon, you didn't tell us who your favorite is!

I'll probably get made a little fun of, but here goes, my favorite performers:
  • First, I have to say this anyway -- but I really do enjoy their music and performances! -- is Buddha Bomb, of which my little sister (BlueNereidUmi, actually) is the singer and lyricist. And I'm sure she'll flip me off for saying so, but I think she's the most adorable little punkette EVER. :3

  • Jackson Browne
    Even if the name doesn't ring a bell, you've almost certainly heard something by him -- Somebody's Baby, Running On Empty, Doctor My Eyes, The Pretender, and The Load-Out/Stay all get regular radio play. I like all of those, of course, but my favorite songs are mostly ones that you don't otherwise hear -- like Sky Blue and Black, from which two of my mules draw their names. To me, his music strikes the right balance between lyrical and musical complexity, and emotional truths the listener can relate to. And best of all, he's still recording and releasing music... okay, so the last record was in '05, and it was solo acoustic versions, and the record before that was in '02 -- his last release before that was in '97, and that was just a 'best of'! o_O; I could probably blather on for hours, so I'll rein myself in before I get any further!

  • Traveling Wilburys
    I'd be surprised if you've heard of the group, but I'd be floored if you're haven't heard of at least one of the members -- Jeff Lynne
(frontman of Electric Light Orchestra and probably the most obscure Wilbury), George Harrison (the once-Beatle), Tom Petty (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, that is), Bob Dylan (tell me you don't need a reference point, please) and Roy Orbison (Crying, Only the Lonely, etc). Obviously no longer recording! But I just read the other day that Rhino is about to release the material from their two records in a box set, so I'm rather stoked -- the originals were put out in 1988 and '90, and have been out of print for I don't even know how long. What's special about them? Dude. Dylan and a Beatle? That fact alone overrides Jeff's great production skills, Tom's... well, catchy pop ability, and even the 'OMG Roy Orbison is a legend!' factor, as well as the skills those two both bring to the table. And they were all friends, which comes across in some ways through the music -- it's not 'same old, same old' for them, despite how long their careers all were; they were enjoying it again.

  • Sublime
    Let me put it this way: I'm 27; I was living within an hour's drive of Long Beach and was sixteen in 1996, the year that they finally started being noticed and received airtime on major radio stations, and the year that the Bradley Nowell, the trio's writer and singer, died of a heroin overdose. I don't know how it was elsewhere, but here, everyone went mental, seems like. All of a sudden, they were all over the radio. And crazily enough, in my area ska is still king... though I admit that might be attributable, at least partially, to the whole 'pot culture' that just goes with ska music. XD

  • Jimmy Buffet
    Let's face it -- anyone who names their back-up band "The Coral Reefers" is probably someone you'd smoke out if you had the chance! If you hear him on the radio, you probably hear Margaritaville, though you can sometimes catch Come Monday or Cheeseburger In Paradise, too. He's another artist of whom I can say that I like the radio songs, but there's others that're never aired that -- to me, at least -- are really just bloody good songs. But his style... is sort of calypso-ish; carribean-influenced, with steel drums alongside the guitars and brass and everything else. The music is fun, and the lyrics are most often witty (and I quote him probably more than anyone else; one of the images on my profile, which used to be in my sig, has a line from Barefoot Children -- "And wrinkles only go where the smiles have been.")10]

  • Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
    Hey, another band that -- guess what? -- doesn't get much radio play! Well, they don't in my area. I'm told it's otherwise in Europe. And a newer discovery for me... I saw them when they were on tour promoting their third record, Howl (they just released a fourth that I still need to pick up) and was pretty damn impressed by what I heard. Genre-wise, they would fall under the indie-rock category, I think. And they've got the indie 'creds' -- the guitarist, Peter Hayes, was a member of the L.A. band The Brian Jonestown Massacre (which falls apart periodically when the founder/writer/etc, in true L.A. fashion, has a nervous breakdown and fires just about everyone who doesn't quit). I'm sure I'm not doing them justice right now, but I think I should just get this posted and go to bed. o_O;

    Hmmm.. This is like asking me if I'd rather smoke a joint or a bowl...

    I'll have to say,

    Buckethead- I really enjoy his insane guitar playing. The man is a genius in his time. Plus, he is really mysterius about his performances. He doesn't want people to enjoy him for him, he wants them to just love his music.

    Sublime- Just because, their damn ******** amazing when your stoned. And so very mellow.

    I think thats all I'll go into for now, but I may come back with the rest of my favorite s**t.

    -favorite songs:
      -Jailhouse
      -Greatest Hits

      -Razorblade
      -Ize of the World
      -12:51

    -favorite songs:
      -Mr.Grieves
      -Debaser
      -Hey

    Nirvana- I know it's like insanely cliche to like them but I don't care. I think I like them more when I'm stoned? I'm not sure.....

      -Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
      -Drain You

    Absolutely! The comp I had all my music files on died, or else I'd volunteer to send it, but I can at least say I found it on Kazaa, if you have that?

    Hehehe that's coming up on half the albums already! rofl Rubber Soul & Revolver are practically a double album anyway, though... but I do like Revolver better -- I just can't decide between that one and Abbey Road! o_O;

    Not that it's "the thing" now like it was ten years ago, though. Except in Riverside here. o_O;

    rofl You're right, I'm going to have to pick up new coloquialisms one of these days! In another ten years, who knows? Maybe saying 'Fidel Castro' will bring me a blank stare in response!

    ... or this year... my dad's students had no idea what d-day was... a couple of them thought it had something to do with a war a long time ago between vietnam and iran.
