Idina
PostPosted: Sat Jun 02, 2007 2:02 pm

Family

Lionel Cross - Idina's adopted father, a human of calm disposition and enough patience to deal with whatever the little royal girl can throw at him, honed by years of dealing with Idina's new 'aunts' and 'uncle'.

'Aunt' Rebecca Cates - A slightly more chaotic woman than Lionel, Rebecca acts on impulse enough for her to have adopted several children of her own to try and fill a void in her own life. She has been Lionel's best friend since they were children, though neither has ever really had feelings for the other.[

'Aunt' Delilah Tucker - Being spoiled herself, Delilah is eager to have a child she can dote upon. Lionel's new ward and Rebecca's children being the only she has, she is sure to give them msot anything they want, should they ask. She is 'madly in love' with Sampson, a feeling which is unreturned and tus causes semi-frequent fights between the two.

'Uncle' Sampson James - A rather distant man, Sampson is often unresponsive to a lot of things that go on about him. Nevertheless, he stays about for his friends. Delilah bothers him a lot with her babble, and, in the event they should ever fight, it is Sampson who will vanish until he feels it is safe to return.

'Cousin' Stephen Cates - Rebecca's first adopted child, Stephen is a hyperactive little ball of fun. He has a nasty habit of trying to take things that don't belong to him, and several times Idina has been found crying because her cousin stole her crown.

'Cousin' Lavanya Cates - Lavanya is a bit calmer than her brother, and usually 'helps' Idina steal her crown back from Stephen whenever he runs off with it. She's rather fond of her small cousin, usually nearby wherever Idina is when she's at Rebecca's house.

'Cousin' Chavi Cates - Chavi is a small baby like Idina, though only awake at night due to the odd condition to which Chavi was 'born'.

Meeting Idina

"Sir, step right this way." A dream, it had been nothing but a dream. A dream of this place, an orphanage. He watched small children running about through gentle eyes, reaching up to run his fingers through red hair. A dream that had felt all too real still haunted his memory. A girl that could have been mistaken for his own child had he not known better. "Mr. Cross?"

"Forgive me," he smiled at the woman who flashed a brief smile back before leading him into a room with cribs along the wall. Organization was obviously failing here, but that didn't matter at the moment. His mind was still haunted by the little girl. "Is she here?"

"The girl you described was brought not too long ago by a parent who couldn't care for her. The fact you knew..." He silenced her by walking past her, easily dodging two boys that ran through, clanging sticks together before being rushed out by the woman. Looking down into the crib, he saw the child from his dream. She slept peacefully, eyes closed.

"What's her name?" He asked, voice gentle and quiet, though he knew she apparently slept heavily with all the noise going on about.

"Idina. Look, Mr. Cross, if you're going to adopt her, you're welcome to her. She needs a good home."

"I am." Lionel reached up to idly scratch at his hairy cheek before leaning down to look at her closer, intrigued by the baby. Her eyes opened, meeting his.

[Later]

He was walking home, like he always did, only instead of carrying groceries or something as trivial, he bore a child in his arms, one which yawned before looking up at him through large eyes. Unable to keep himself from smiling, he opened the door to his house. Lionel let Idina survey her home for the first time before walking through the small house back to his room, where a nice crib was set up.

Placing her gently down after kissing her forehead, Lionel looked at her face, lit up by the firey sunset. "Welcome home, Idina Cross." She merely blinked up at him before he closed the blinds, tucking her in with her pink blanket. Caressing her face with his hands, he felt his fingers touch something cold and metallic. He drew his hand back, brushing aside red hair to look at a gold crown, a pink drop lying on her forehead.

"What is that?" He asked quietly, though the answers he sought were already recalling from last night's dream. Lionel's touch still gentle, he started to pull her crown off, to which she started squealing and kicking madly until he drew his hand away. Still unsatisfied, she continued to fuss until her new father gave her a pink pacifier that the orphanage had supplied. "Sorry," he apologized quietly, waiting until her heavy eyelids fell before walking over to his bed and pulling out a book, glancing up every few pages to make sure that his daughter was still sound asleep.

Lionel's Dream in Full

Waking up to the sounds of a babe's crying, Lionel played witness to a shrouded figure leaving a lone baby on the doorstep to a small, odd orphanage. He had seen it everytime he walked down to Rebecca's house, and everytime dismissed it without much thought. Aware that he was not alone, the man turns to look at who stands beside him. Only there is a faint transparency, one which does not speak, but watch alongside him.

A woman, the same who would help him later, exited the orphanage to pick up the small bundle wrapped in pink. "My daughter," a lyrical voice spoke from the transparency that only stares ahead as the door shut, leaving them alone in the dark on a familiar street. "The former guardian could not care for her. She is... too important to leave in a place like that. You would be safe, someone they and she can trust. Correct? Of course it is." Every word sounded like a new note in a complicate song, each meaning a lyric to which harmonized with a feeling inside of him.

"Will you care for her? The heiress to our kingdom?" A question. Irrelevant, for only the answer mattered. "Yes, a princess. I am the queen. It pains me so much to try and reach you like this, but when I had heard my dear baby was in trouble, I had to help. Now, will you do as I ask?"
The answer was a "Yes" yelled out triumphantly as Lionel awoke before getting dressed and preparing for a long, lifechanging day.

Cousin to the Rescue!

"Give it BACK!" Lavanya's fuchsia hair flew wildly as she and her brother fought over the golden cirlcet clapsed firmly in their pink and brown fingers. The unicorns had been going at it since the baby had started crying. Hidden behind the bushes behind their uncle's house, they tugged, occasionally stopping when Stephen's many 'shinies' started making clinking sounds.

"No, it's mine!" The boy's tail flipped wildly while he pulled, determined to win back his new prize. "Whassa baby need it for anyways?" He demanded, digging his hooves into the dirt to prevent him from slipping further toward Lavanya.

"You got enough!" Doing something Mother told them not to was not something Lavanya did every day. But, today, the girl wanted desperately for Stephen to let go. Launching forward, she bit his hand, causing him to cry out and release the circlet. Leaping up, she fled into the back yard, eyes wide as Stephen stood up from behind the bush, tears rolling down his face.

Lavanya took a step towards him, trying to get him to calm down, but it was too late. Stephen yelled out "MOMMY", collapsing onto the ground, hysterically sobbing. Mother did not come, which was understandable from Lavanya's point of view. Mother had gotten big in pregnancy, and it was much easier to send someone else to deal with her two feuding children.

It was Sampson who stepped out of the door, raising a white eyebrow at Lavanya who clutched the crown tight. He turned to kneel beside Stephen, making sure nothing was hurt too bad, nothing broken. Lavanya scurried inside, wiping her hooves to keep from tracking dirt in all over her uncle's nice house. Lionel cradled Idina while Delilah cooed at Chavi, scratching behind the pair of ears coming from the baby's head. The fuchsia girl went to her uncle, peering at Idina who was kicking, her face red from having been screaming for so long.

Lavanya slipped the crown gently back onto Idina's head, watching the baby calm down almost miraculously. Lionel sighed happily, leaning back on his couch, cooing softly. Idina looked at Lavanya, reaching up to try and touch. Unicorn-girl and baby watched one another with fascination, each trying to decipher the looks of the other somehow. Soon, Lionel glanced at Lavanya. "You want to hold her?"

"Nuh!" The child leaped back, stepping on some crayons that Stephen had left last time they'd been here. "I'd drop her or somethin." She said sheepishly, jumping onto the couch next to her uncle. He watched Lavanya start to look about, finally finding a stuffed bear that Mother had brought over as a gift. She bounced the bear in front of Idina, whispering "rawr". Idina giggled and cooed, grabbing the bear's ear and tugging it. Lavanya giggled, before looking up as the door closed. In walked Sampson and a defeated looking Stephen.

"He stole Idina's crown. S'why she's been making such a fuss." Sampson said, letting loose the still teared up boy. Lavanya noticed that every single shiny he had been wearing had been confiscated, now resting in a pile in Sampson's hand, which he handed to Mother, who put the mass in her pocket. Lavanya blinked before looking back at Idina, waving. Her face broke into a sunny grin as Idina waved back.

Idina's presence around my house seems to just brighten the place up. I catch myself trying to watch TV and then looking down at her cuddled up with her teddy bear unil I hear the end of the show running through my ears.

Lavanya makes sure she sees her little cousin at least three times a week, else they both get fussy. Both little unicorns stayed the night a few days ago. Stephen watched a lot of animated movies. Lavanya watched a few, but she was mostly with Idina and me until it was time for my little princess to go to bed. Stephen didn't try to steal anything shiny from me, which is curious, but maybe that's a good sign. It'd be nice for the boy to grow a bit.

Idina's fussing again, so I better go ahead and see what's wrong. High maintenence at 3 AM, I hope this stops soon. I'm so glad I didn't go to bed early. Goodnight.
- Lionel
