So starting next monday I will be trying out for my second year on guard at my school. Our school just got a crap load of money so we are able to add new stuff and we are adding a Rifle to the half time show. Any tips for a first time rifle twirler? :]

I love rifle. Strength is key. Strength can be pretty you just have to know how. My rifle was the heaviest of the team. (no joke) if you could do a triple with my rifle you could do a quad and up with anyone elses. Do yourself a favor if you have ANY fingernails cut them off now. They will be broken off in a matter of seconds. Speed control is everything. It's very easy to suddenly go really fast. But if you can't control it you might hurt yourself or someone else. (trust me been on both sides of that.) but don't sweat it. Just have fun.

Im trying not to sweat it but im not sure now im going to prepare 100% for both flag and rifle because i want to make them both. You know? I feel confidant about flag but with rifle i still just dont know wht to expect.

Mine is the heaviest out of all the rifles too. D; They got all brand new rifles and I have to use this old one with no padding on the ends and 20 thousand layers of tape. D;
Wear gloves!! It's gonna hurt after awhile from slapping it on your hands.

keep your energy the same while locking and relesing. . . locking is the most important part of the toss. . . besides youknow accually catching it cause that helps too

Dont be scared of it. Thats what I had to get over.
I was scared ----less of it when I started spinning it. Now I love it. Just remember taco hands. (thats what we call it when you gotta squeeze).

Wrap you thumbs on every catch!!! And if your anything like me you'll find the left hand glove much more usefull than the right so try to make sure that one has a lot of padding because when you wrap your hand around the tip it tends to smack that hand hardest. When you spin try to only use you forearm and wrist. Wrist flexibilty will also help you with tosses. Try not to bend your knees when you catch and always be aware of you free hands. You'll look pretty stuipid under a toss if your hands look retarded so ask your instructor where your hands should be under a toss because it varies with different instructors. umm also be prepared to break some nails and never spin with fake ones. Trust me its painfull. I've also noticed good posture helps. Also heavier rifels are easier to throw because they are less likely to get caught in the wind but lighter rifels are easier to do work with.
yeah thats all I remember.

ALSO!! Catch like a man. My instructor always tells us that. Dont be afraid to be aggressive.(sp) Also you know you caught it right if it dosent hurt. Its kind of hard to explain but if you catch it right, which would be aggressive and squeez when you catch you dont even need gloves. It feels like magic.
