What is faith? Why should we have faith? What should we have faith in? and, for what reasons are faith necessary for those things?
Ever think about it? No?
Start now, you're being timed... ninja (just kidding, take your time.)

Faith is defined as belief or trust in a person or thing, or belief that is not based on proof. In a larger context, I would define it as belief in something unverifiable or unknowable through mundane channels of human experience.
Faith is always necessary. As Descartes said, "I think, therefore I am." This was his one totally true, unfalsifiable statement. Unfortunately, nothing else is. You experience the world through your senses. But how do you know they are accurate? You have no independent verification. God could be screwing with us, this could all be a dream, we could all be in the Matrix. We could never know. Even if you trust your senses, you will never directly experience 90% of what you would claim to know. How many men have stood above the galaxy and watched the Earth go around the sun? How about the planet wiggle on it's axis. For God's sake, you all take the existence of Antarctica on textbooks and faith. Faith is necessary to function as a human being. We just start to disagree on the bigger, non verifiable issues of life. Religion, death, purposes of existence, ect.

I haven't found any need for it. Been operating without it for over a decade. It's certainly not necessary in psionics.
I don't need to have faith that Antarctica exists. My unswerving belief isn't necessary for me to operate under the assumption that it's there. I can have a few doubts about it, and not suffer any difficulties.

However, serial killers doubt the existence of other people's humane psychy, morals, and don't acknowledge other people's feelings, thus, without faith that other people feel based on some evidence, people needlessly kill other people.

Best post in the history of posts. I'd agree, except... by me quoting it, I say this post will now include: Waffles, Penguins, Muffins, Jesus, Moses, Buddha, signifigant-religious figures-etc. A freakin' awesome paradox: "I always lie". A reference to Socrates' feelings of piety: Socrates felt that by being pious to one god, you were being impious to another. A statement: Josh is cool. A Ninja, ninja and unproper grammaticalness. -This post will now go unto the unwritten hall of fame.-

Uh, Lobo...sorry, but that totally did not make any logical sense. There was no logical progression there at all. Not having faith does not make one a serial killer, lol.

I personally think that without faith nothing really means anything at all.

(If I wasn't interrupted by the phone I would have been able to put my last statement into a more logical fashion that related to the subject more and made more sense. I apologize). I believe(**I HAVE FAITH IN**! ((HAH!!<)) the fact that there is not scientific proof to everything yet, thus, everything within your own conscious is real, to you, and you alone. To say that everyone is seperate and thinks differently, has different thoughts, and everyone feels, cannot be based on scientific fact, at all. We have to trust in our own conscious, which could possibly trick us into percieving something fake to be real, that says that all people feel. You, as an individual, have no way of telling whether or not other people feel. The only way to tell if someone feels pain, like you do, is to administer long horrendous tests that would put the individual into horrid pain, while monitoring their brain function, heart rate, and many other things. Then, compare it to yourself. The other option is having faith that other people act like us, thus, they feel like us. We believe that, thus we have faith in that. And, I believe my previous statement did make sense. xp Faith is believing, seeing is not faith. The New International Webster's Standard Dictionary faith n. Unflagging trust; belief without firm proof-

think about this
Magick, the art of faith.
Life, walks of faith.
if you have absolutely no faith or confidence (which is pretty much the same thing) that techniques or spells will work then that brings up two things
1. will your energy be motivated enough to flow?
2. why do the technique? you dont believe that they will work or are even real.
faith, even minor faith, plays a part in our everyday lives. without a tidbit of beleif we dont even have motivation. think about it.

Well then there is also Chaos Magick and Discordia, where it's law to have no laws and to not believe or have faith in anything -.^. So.....yeaaaa....you don't technically need faith or belief at all, not even for Magick.

Chaos is moar, no belief or faith unless it suits a certain task; like believing demons are single, discrete entities when you're talking to them, but considering them aspects of your psyche when you're not. X3
