We have yet to discuss the MOST IMPORTANT question of them all... the question that eludes philosphers, scientists and robots... even a question that religion cannot answer.... and that question is: Why?
If there is truly a reason for everything, then I want to know what it is. Why do I want to know the reason? Because I'm curious. Why am I curious? Because I'm not satisfied with what I know. Why am I not satisfied? Boredom. Why am I bored? Wow... that's a good one... I guess because I'm not doing something exciting at this exact moment...
I SWEAR I solved this questions once when I was psychoactively afflicted. But the answer took me so long to come up with I could backtrack my steps to prove my logic. Or maybe the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy is right. It's 42.
And maybe it just proves man's endless stupidity for coming up with such a pointless & endless question.

Man asked why because he is always in an endless search for knowledge. He seeks this knowledge out of curiosity and greed to know more than another. Man is greedy because man's nature is corrupt, man's nature is corrupt because...save that for another thread. The answer to the question why...because we don't know. As Socrates so simply put... Socrates [I am considered wise because I know that I know nothing.] We constantly search for answers because truthfully...we have none.

Why?
Why not?
If no one were living, if nothing was happening, if there was nothing growing, thinking, moving....there would be nothing.
I don't think there is a reason. I think we just are here to live--what else can we do? We can question, moralize, analyze, talk, think, do, etc... Why can't that be our 'reason'? We are here in order to be here.
And we know nothing. xd
And this is my 700th post...WOOt

Why do you ask why?
'Why' is just a way to ask what causes something, what is the meaning of its occurence. As such there can be as many answers as you can assign to it. 'Why' is asking for creativity to fill the void - for someone to provide an answer that makes sense to you. As such most of these questions have been answered many times in many different ways - but only you can choose which one will satisfy you - if any.

Why? Well, because we have to. It's just the way things are. Accept that you exist for no reason other than to exist. If you want more meaning, put it there. That's up to you. So, go forth and people the world. Drink, have fun, and be merry. Live life to it's fullest, and don't stop until your dead. That's how you do it. Why? Becaues. And 42.

I have two new answers to the question why... one I just learned in studying the writings of the philosopher Nietsche more thoroughly.
1. The universe is overloaded with an abundance of energy. This is what caused everything. Science teaches us that something sitting still is storing up potential energy... and with nothing sitting for too long, it finally overloaded in the Big Bang. The energy manifested itself as matter and the matter creates and destroys to alieve the universe of this excess energy. Fusion, gravity, life, nature and even electrons within every atom are all expending energy. Physics also teaches us that matter and energy are relative. This also makes me think about Fung Schey (no idea how to spell it). Maybe as a life form we are able to continually burn excess energy of the universe.
2. "There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?" John F. Kennedy

I take this as a 'meaning of life' sort of thread. The meaning of life is painfully simple, really.
The universe is everchanging, impermenant, and myseterious. Nothing stays the same. Rocks are weathered, books are interpreted, thoughts are enriched.
People have a gift which (as far as we know) no other animal on earth has. We have the gift of thought, curiosity, and the ability to gain knowledge. although the spectrum of knowledge available to us is slim compared to the universe, it is huge compared to us.
The meaning of life is to document the changes by means of our memories and thoughts, and, by doing so, gain more knoweldge of the universe and everything around us.
Each of us has two worlds to concentrate on. The world around us, and the world within oneself. The world around us is filteres through the brain into ones own world, enriched and sometimes twisted in order to fit us best. The changes going on around us directly affect the changes in our own world.
The meaning of life is to sew the patches of Outside together into a quilt of knowledge and intelligence that resides within us.
Though, in comparison to the knowledge we cannot reach, our quilt is but a single thread in the huge, ornate, and flawless quilt of the universe.

Lesidia The meaning of life is to document the changes by means of our memories and thoughts, and, by doing so, gain more knoweldge of the universe and everything around us. I gotta bring it back to the "Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy." Your theory is almost implying that we ARE the computer planet written about in the series. But, as the book pointed out, no matter whether the mission goes properly or not, we will get the wrong answer. ha ha.... Off topic... but can anyone explain how 6 x 9 = 42 in base13? I'm really struggling to understand what the hell base13 is. Here's the Wiki-Entry on it.

it's quite simple really...you start in base 10 ((which is normal math unless your psychotic)) and take the answer to a odd multiple formula to convert it to base 13...which instead of the normal 10 digit 0-9 it's 13 digit 0-9, X, E, and T.((or there's the calculus way but we won't get into that.)) Base10: 6x9=54 base13:6x9=42 4x13+2=54 since base 13 is completely useless in all maths so it is the meaning of life, the universe, sand everything. As Deep Thought exlained...that is the answer but do you really know or understand the question?

ochimaru We have yet to discuss the MOST IMPORTANT question of them all... the question that eludes philosphers, scientists and robots... even a question that religion cannot answer.... and that question is: Why?The word "Why" makes no sense without being followed by a proposition. (And an auxillary, like 'do' or 'is'. Hmm.) In any case, "Why" means "What is the cause of?", and it seems to me that any question of "Why?" is ultimately a question of origins.

What I find most curious about asking why... is that humans insist there IS a reason why (or that we're capable of understanding why). That's making one heck of an assumption right there. Some things will probably forever be beyond human understanding due to the limitations of our biological capacities.

And as far as "Why" is concerned...you might as well ask "What's yellow and dangerous?" It just doesn't matter why. Why will never be answered. Why am I alive? Because my parents did something not normally talked about, and a natural process began. Why are you alive? Same reason, except substitute your parents for mine. That'd be creepy. Oh, by the way, the answer is "shark-infested custard".

Shark infested custard! What tasty and terrifying images come up from that phrase... but maybe it IS the answer to why. Who am I to say! Wait... are the sharks alive? Or is this a new treat at Dairy Queen? mmmm... sharky custards...

I don't know if it is possible to say the answer to "why" if it's refering to everything.
Personally, I think everyone has a specific purpose... and it may or may not tie in together. And... again, I couldn't even begin to guess what the purpose for everything.
Without saying any personal details that made me think it, I'll state that I'm either here because I do have a purpose that I must forfill, or I came here without one... and may never find it. I don't even know what I could say about anything else. I barely know who I am for that matter...
Maybe there are reasons, but overall quite possibly everything is just in a delicate balance, and the only purpose is for it to remain in balance. And... whether or not it means things will keep going or end when "perfect" balance is met is something else...

ochimaru Shark infested custard! What tasty and terrifying images come up from that phrase... but maybe it IS the answer to why. Who am I to say! Wait... are the sharks alive? Or is this a new treat at Dairy Queen? mmmm... sharky custards... I must ask, ochimaru...are you familiar with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? If not, then you should be. And I don't mean 'passing familiar'. I'm about to go deep. SPOILER WARNINGS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T READ H2G2... This may seem off-topic in a "Why?" thread to some, but I assure you, it isn't. After all, the mere fact that six multiplied by nine actually does equal 42 in base 13 should say something, since Mr. Adams was not aware of that fact at the time. Even if that doesn't, there are quite a few other references to the unique Answer, and then, the Question, that we want. The fact that The Restaurant at the End of the Universe opens with this: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe "There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened." The fact that God's Final Message to His Creation was "We Apologise for the Inconvienence". There are others, but I'm getting at something here. We're trying to find an answer to a question we don't accurately know, or even understand, and then when we find the answer, we'll be angry. I know we will. What would you do if you found out, today, that the answer actually is "shark-infested custard"? Our only question is "Why?" Well, why what? Why are we here? Reproduction. Why are we sentient? I don't know. When I find out, I'll tell you. Until then, I'm still looking. Don't forget a towel. ...wow, did I actually type all that? Meh...this is what I get for Wiki-ing my second-favorite book series.
