Your candidates Chaos: The God of Destruction
The Biolizard: Prototype of the Ultimate Lifeform
Neo Metal Sonic: The Metal Overlord
Black Doom: Leader of the Black Arms
Mephiles: The Dark
Erazor Djinn: Evil genie of the lamp
I gotta give props to Mephiles for being the first to truly kill Sonic and the triumphant return of Metal Sonic into the series. But it was the opeing scene in SA1 that I saw as a kid that forever cought my attention, and caused me to beg my mom to get a Dreamcast so I could play it.
Chaos wins my vote 3nodding

To my mind, Chaos is the only one of the flock of new villains who was ever any good.

Robotnik: Nobody overshadows Robotnik fools, not even that blasted hedgehog! Just wait, all shall bow down to Robotnikland's Empire, when I finally crush that fool Sonic and his friends, and build my kingdom upon their battered corpses!!!!

Chaos wins my vote too! Come on, he's a god! mrgreen
As far as I know (and setting aside Eggman and Metal Sonic), he hasn't been killed off like the others. He was just neutralized.
I think I'm finally gonna give in and watch the Sonic '06 cutscenes to get my facts straight. Sonic and the Secret of the Rings I know I'm getting, so I'm avoiding major spoilers from that.

Think I'm gonna have to place my vote behind Chaos, as well. He's got such an interesting role and backstory, and the storyline for SA1 is one of my all-time favorites in the entire series (wasn't the writer for it, also the one who did a story for a Phantasy Star game? If so, the guy/girl needs to pen another game plotline!).
Although, I can't deny that both the Biolizard and Metal Sonic have an aura of coolness around them. The Biolizard for just what he is (and I guess kinda gives Shadow a slight sense of scariness....all that power, but in a more compact form : P), and Metal Sonic for nostalgia's sake. And at least he doesn't go down from running into a wall. razz
Not that the rest of the baddies are all that bad, though. Despite being a tad ridiculous, Doom's role helped fill in the gaps with Shadow's backstory, and Mephiles is perhaps the most evil of the bunch (and I guess having a corny Yu-gi-oh voice gives him a slight bit of charm, too).
Can't speak on the Secret Rings villain yet, as I have yet to play that title.
Btw, don't feel too left out of the loop, Azura. I think the plotline in the 360/PS3 title basically erases itself, anyway. oo;

Well, I am afraid I have to agree with the majority here. Robotnik is the original villain of the series and nothing can really beat him for sheer originality in the series.
Sadly, games/stories/films and or the like run out of ways to create a story with the original characters. I remember reading, I believe on the Mobius Forum; someone posting that you should always be able to make a story of fanfiction without adding to the original cast. If you can, then you have the talent.
But people nowadays cannot seem to make anything without adding anything new. Sometimes it works, but nowadays we get new characters, villains for characters sake and the plots just don't work particually well.
If I were to admit to liking any of the newer bosses though, then Chaos, since it was so unique and not a rehash of an old character gone wrong.

King Quillz I've just noticed somthing, I wonder if Chaos was ever a homage to Cell from DBZ. If you think about it the similarities are incredible, they are both credited as all powerfull and both evolve. I'm sure there's more but it's Monday so my brains are currently fried confused

Other than that, it's apples and oranges. Besides, I prefer Chaos' more admirable role than Cell's....well, if he was as powerful as his head was big.... : p

That's just a different version of what Sonic does with the Chaos Emeralds. Besides, Chaos is never "ahchargin his lazer". He just fires it, plain and simple.
