BLASPHEMY.

Now, I've been looking for somewhere to start this thread, and since lots of cool people hang out here, I'll do so here. There's a line of thought within the magickal community - amongst chaos magickians mostly, or so I've seen - that claims invoking fictional beings is possible and useful, with many different theories as to why it works (or doesn't). However, that isn't what this thread's about.

Suppose it's true - you can channel/invoke/evoke/etc any fictional entity you choose. My question is, who (or what!) would you summon, under what circumstances, and why? I've got a few here, but I want some suggestions and shizz. For no real reason, other than the lulz.

Carrie, from Stephen King's eponymous novel - channel her if you've been purposefully embarrased by someone, and you want destructive revenge.
The Maze and the Minotaur from Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves - summoning both and setting them on someone could potentially cause them to feel like they're being followed a lot, especially if things written in the style of the book are near them.
John Constantine, from the Hellblazer comics. I'm so totally going to work out some kind of invocation for him, cause I love him so much. <3 Channeling him could give you a cool, suave attitude to any magickal crisis that's going on, as well as nudging luck in your direction. Smoking a Silk Cut cigarette could probably aid the invocation.
Laertes from Hamlet - his no-nonsense attitude is the antithesis of Hamlet's slow, broody procrastination. He Gets Stuff Done, regardless of the cost.
Jack from Will and Grace - Don't give me that look. Channeling Jack'd make you the life and soul of the party. And also kind of iffy.
Karen from WIll and Grace - the icy matriarch who can slay anyone with a glare. A modern day Hecate.
Giles or Wesley from Buffy - I'd imagine invoking them while doing magickal research'd work wonders. 8D

I don't really have any sort of experience with this sort of thing, but it was an interesting thought. And very [insert word that it slipping my mind that means people will reply to it].

I'd either have to choose Ella from Nix's Shade's Children or Frank from Banks' The Wasp Factory. Ella would be strengthening, calming, and bring wisdom. Frank...well...that'd just be fun. ...No one here has probably read either of the books, but that's ok.

And I think someone is a big "Will and Grace" fan...but I won't say who.

Didn't post post this in the other guild? Ha. Whatever. I guess you can invoke a fictional being, I don't see the purpose though.

Yar, I crossposted it for the lulz. That, and I was getting bored of the topics in MysRealms. :U

As for the purpose - the same purpose you invoke/evoke anything really - to get the aid of an entity that's more experienced in some field than you are, so they can give you a helping hand.

I know, totally. You can tell Mr. Ritter's /so/ gay for Will.

I would probably invoke Deities from Dungeons and Dragons... 'cause that would be fun...

Imagine a voice in the back of your mind: if you want my help, you must roll the percentiles! I will NOT help without a good enough roll!

I would probably invoke (or maybe evoke) any and all Gods of Time... and anyone that pertains to knowledge...

Ah, yes, I have crazy D&D memories. Including this past year's Christmas present for a good friend of mine, Scrabble: Dungeons & Dragons Edition. (Yes, children, with a simple ink-jet printer, internet capabilities, a traditional Scrabble game, and some clear contact paper, you too can have your very own D&D Scrabble game!) That would be hilarious, though. I can see a frustrated Khalida pulling out his little satchel of dice for some hardcore decision-making.

Do you enjoy life, Mr. Mitsh? Do you find it pleasant, rewarding?

Fictional beings, fun stuff. Summoning from Will and Grace... That's like getting an AIDS test from a needle-short heroin recovery clinic in Africa.

Dungeons and Dragons has a more devoloped mythos and pantheons then a lot of real religions I know.

So sad, but its true!!!

I have to say though, this topic is awesome.

If I could summon a fictional character, then I would totally summon Sephiroth. Why? Because of everyone has an inner fangirl.

I'd totally summon Washu from Tenchi Muyo too. Cause she's frickin hardcore.

EDIT: Ok, so since Mitsh wants Wesley or Giles, I'm totally going for Spike!
Maybe Gambit too. I heart Cajuns!

Jaaaaaayyyyyne!!! The man they call JAAAAAYYYYYNNNE!!!!!!
whee

Or, just for fun, Jubilee of the X-Men: "Watch out villains, I've got razzle-dazzle!" stare

...Does it seriously count as fictional if you're invoking Shadow from American Gods in order to influence your luck? I mean, he's supposed to be an existing semi-deity, isn't he?

And, of course, my eternal favorite, Anoia, goddess of Things That Get Stuck in Drawers, who will occasionally grant mysterious hand-mixers (which of course appear by sticking in the drawer). Yes, the rattling of drawers and the curses of the woe-stricken are as praise unto Anoia. ("How can it close with it, but then not open? Who bought this thing, anyway?!") Terry Pratchett creates awesome gods. I'd like to punch Nuggan. (He has a Living Gospel which auto-updates with new additions to the list of things that are an Abomination Unto Nuggan. Things like the color blue, and small children, and women who wear pants, etc.) Of course, he's also got The Lady, but she's not made up. I know several people who seem to survive based on her benevolence.

But yeah. I'd totally invoke Anoia. I'm pretty sure I inadvertently have already.

what you're really doing in this case is not invoking a fictional being, but modifying your mind or creating a servitor. really simple stuff too.

'cept, there's no real adequate way to test that theory, much. You could just as easily say you're drawing power from a parallel universe, you're using auto-suggestion, you're channeling the mask of a god... In all honesty, I doubt anyone can safely say why the bleedin' hell it works, since there's a million and one theories out there.

I agree with iolitefire on this one - summon the bishies and hardcore chicks - just to see where that gets you (getting stalked by crazed gamers and otaku - of course). Nyuu ~ I'd go for Yami no Marik Ishtar... because he is my true otaku-love User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

You're ceating a form for your belief to manifest through. Isn't that what most "real" gods are anyway? Just there's enough ambient continual belief that they tend to be more powerful when invoked.

Sounds something like what some actors do.

My boyfriend was talking about when he was in the RenFaire cast, they did a meditation. The idea was to let your energy drain out of you, and let your (fictional) character's energy fill you back up.
