Okay, so the Youth dances in my stake are pretty lame. I don't blame the dance committee, nor the YW/YM leaders in the area. I think the biggest problem is that there is a very small number of people that actually attend, everyone stays in their little cliques, and no one ever dances. Any ideas how I could make it exciting to get more youth to come, and to break them from their shells?

Just go up to people and ask them to dance. It works for me. You might also have to ask the DJ to put on a ladies' choice song. That's how we had to get people to dance once.

Well we had a youth DJ our last dance (on Saturday) because our last DJ was really.. well he didn't have any newer songs. At first I thought our DJ was doing well, but then he started playing music that was good, but it was the kind of music that you can't really dance to. And it was a little upsetting because he didn't play any of our requests. Usually we have a ladies choice, but that still doesn't get them up and dancing. We used to play those stupid match up games, that no one really liked, but they did get get the people up and dancing.

Any ideas how to get people to come to the dance?

Just get a gun and shoot the ground yelling "Dance! DANCE!!"
*ok seriously XD*

Hmm as a guy, people try setting themes to dances to bring people in. Personally having a theme never made a difference, one thing you can do to really help is to offer your members a ride (plus call their homes and harass them XD), trust me the biggest thing is getting them out of their houses ^^.
*At least thats my problem xP*

yeah. Try having a dinner, or some other activity before the dance that a lot of people will go to and then they can see what the dances are like and hopefully more will come.

Or do what our area did. Cancel them and only hold them every couple of months. Now all the dances are really full when we have them xp

As a rather adamant NON-dance goer I wouldn't be much help. I would be just THRILLED if somehow church found some OTHER "date" to sponsor.

Well we only have dances once a month or so.. maybe less. We already offer the kids rides to the dance (the leaders drive to the dances around here)
:/ Thanks for the ideas though

It took me a while to really get the hang of the dances.
In fact, early on, I would have to leave the main room on occasion and go play the piano or lie on the floor of an empty classroom for ten minutes or more before I could go back in. Slowly, I worked up to a point where I didn't need to leave at all and I ended up having a great time.

I think part of what made it fun was when I found myself being able to talk to anybody and everybody, and not being afraid to ask people to dance. (Also, not being afraid to dance.)
I think I had a lot more fun dancing to angry chick music in a group than slow dancing.

And the reason I kept forcing myself to go? Was because I was always so afraid my future companion would end up coming to the one I just didn't feel like going to. Never happened, lol. But I learned a lot about people and how to have a good time.

You know I've always found it difficult to dance in a group b/c to be honest I think I just look down right retarded XDD. In any case after a few years I resorted to using 'Wing Chung' (If thats how you spell it razz ) at a school dance. *Apparently everyone there knew how to dance to everything* I apparently can only dance to swing, and a little samba ^^. Anyways, it turned out that throwing out some kung fu made my dancing better XDDD (Yay for fighting haha). The funny thing is, someone commented on how well I danced afterwards XD!!!!

Well we do the chacha slide. Snowball dances wouldn't work too well (we're in Florida here) and it's actually the whole stake that doesn't dance sad

Again, thanks for the ideas. heart

i never liked dances as a youth or a single adult. I dont know church dances just never thrilled me. I liked going to school dances though.

Then again I was always a bit of a black sheep in church activites. regardless im just glad i dont have to worry about meeting people anymore

We had this leadership meeting a week or so ago about how we can get innactive members to come and I remember there were threec's but I only remember two of them which are; care ad commit. Commit them to coming to the dance by offering a ride and a time you can pick them up or something like that, it will be easier for them to say yes then and go then say no or call back later and say no.

hmm sounds like a good idea to get the kids from my ward to go smile
Thanks for the idea. I'll see what I can do the next time around.

I'm actually really excited, I think our next dance is the Stake Prom, from which I heard was really amazing last year (the first year they ever did it).
