Throughout Xena, Argo was probably (next to gabrielle and other family) the most important thing in Xena's life. However throughout Season 1 - 6, Argo has been referred to as both "boy" and "girl".
This is most confusing to even the most hardcore Xenite and i raise this issue for it to be sorted once and for all

Well Argo is a boy name [at least I think] it's really close to the name Argos [Odysseus' dog for The Odyssey] I think Argo is male...

.:.Shocks is speaking.:..:.I belive (I may be wrong) That Argo is the ancient greek word for swift...but Argo is a girl Xen contantly talks about Argo being a girl...I think the confussion comes up because the diffrent horses in the series were obviouslt diffrent sexes so when Lucy says "woah boy/easy boy" or vice versa I think she's actually talking out of character to the horse XD.:. .:.Shocks has spoken.:.

For the first few episodes, Argo was referred to as male. When Xena and Gabby defrosted, Joxer had a horse that was Argo's foal, so I assume Argo was eventually decided as female.
They used horses of both genders to play Argo.
My question is where Argo was in all the episodes where Argo didn't appear.

Im pretty sure that Argo is considered a mare for the most part. Though im not sure if Shocks_dumb_cohort is right about it meaning swift, but i do remember being told at some point it meant wind.... Argo was also the name of the greek hero Jason's ship who went after the golden fleece.

Argo is supposed to be a girl (mare). When Xena gets Argo II she says "she looks just like her mother."
The confusion comes from the fact the Argo was played by 4 different horses and some were girls (mares) and the others were boys (geldings).

Argos is indeed the Greek word for swift. It was a popular name for dogs, and that was what Odysseus' dog was named. Hence the Argonaut is a swift ship, and Argo is a swift horse.

Although "Argo" does sound more like a male's name, I always thought that the horse was a girl. xd Then again, I never really put much thought into the gender of Xena's horse. mad P:
