I am having quite a bit of unrest lately. I am struggling with trying to understand what is good music and what is "wordly music". I listen to Armor For Sleep, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, and many others like these. Do you think this music can affect my relationship with God?

It can but does not have to. Depends on your intentions (your heart). If you use it as your source of entertainment or relaxation, then yes it is almost guaranteed to change you, because that's the atmosphere you soak yourself in. If you are using it for any other reason (which can be many things) then no not necessarily. All I can say is be on your guard when it comes to listening to music like that, because it can and will change you for the good or bad depending on what kind of atmosphere the song is encouraging. Basically you become like the music you listen to constantly, so listen sparingly.

wordly music is any music that is used outside church.

I would say it depends as well. For me I look at the lyrics to see f they are voulgar even before I listen to a certain band or artist. I would say ask God to help you discern whether a certain band is a hinderance or not. And to also read the lyrics before you start listening to a band or artist.

I believe worldly music is anything with a worldly theme to the music. Junk in (your ears), junk out! In will most assuredly affect you relationship with God. Don't allow junk into your music, music can go straight to your soul. Check out the lyrics and if it isn't something that is uplifting, encouraging, or helping you to grow in someway, don't listen to it. If it is the beat you like, then see if you can get it without words, or find a Christian band that gives you the same sound.

As a side note, just something I was thinking as I was typing this, I would also think that if you listen to music by a band that aren't Christian, or that claims to have another God, that might not be good either. It's kind of like this, if you hang out with friends that aren't Christians or that worship the devil, then you will be influenced by them, and not for the good. So you may want to consider the source of the music as well, don't hang out with the wrong crowd.

Music can definatly affect your relationship with God. What you listen to affects you whether you know it or not.

If you look you should be able to find Christian bands that sound the same (or better) than all those bands. They might not play their music in churches, but they still bring glory to God I believe.

It's a fact, anyone that's not Christian is EVIL. THEY WILL DO ONLY HARM.

I consider Wordly Music, music about Worldly things. Just about all of Rap is out. Nothing but stuff about Drugs, sex and money. Country isn't so bad, but I'd rather listen to nothing than that. A lot of the music I listen that isn't Christian, is about absolutely nothing really. Live to Win, The Final Countdown, Danzing by Verka Serduchka, Safety Dance, are some of my favorites and prime examples. Love-ish songs, about girls I like and I want to be with, but totally not in a sex way, aren't bad either. Take On me by A-Ha, I think that counts. BUt yeah, abstain from crude language and themes, and you'll be good.

But yeah, seriously, the examples I listed are like the core of my musical taste. I have the weirdest taste in music, and its refelected in my myspace url, weirdmusicjunkie.

By 'worldly' I presume you mean not Heavenly?

Well, all music we listen to is earthly. So, every song we hear on earth is going to be, in some ways, carnal or earthly.

I recommend Christian music. I personally like country and opera.
