Ok I am new to classifying metal. The Nu Metal thread has helped out a good deal. My questions are though....1. Is there a thin line between Metalcore/Hardcore and actual Metal? And how do you differentiate between the two?

There are different kinds of Hardcore (hardcore punk and hardcore emo being the most popular) But, Metalcore is combination of Metal and hardcore, therefore making it a metal sub-genre. Hardcore is a punk sub-genre that is influenced by metal, but is not metal. Hope this helps. 3nodding

Oh I got the impression that some didn't think that Metalcore was a sub-genre for the fact that it has some hardcore in it.

I'm not an expert on hardcore punk, nor Metalcore for this matter, because the little Hardcore I've heard has not pleased my ears, same for Metalcore. However I know from reading that Hardcore is an influence not only in Metalcore but also in Thrash Metal, and it's son, Death metal. One thing you have to be careful with is the fact that some Metalcore leans much more towards the Hardcore side while other is much more Metal than Hardcore. This means that some of it is just Hardcore with Metal influences(and not Metal in reality), and the other is Metal(Usually Thrash or Death) with Hardcore influences(this being the metal side of Metalcore).

So would it be safe to say that Death and Thrash is in a way Metalcore? And could someone possibly give me an example or two?

okay the thing with thrash and death metal is that they saw what the hardcore punks were doing - playing ultra-fast with a lot of agression, and they decided to apply that to what was already being done in metal.
they are not metalcore. metalcore is more like trying to take the simple 3-chord riffsof hardcore punk and apply that to the already hard-core influenced thrash genre. it is a simplification, although they still play some pretty technically challenging pieces at times.

Some deathmetal is very technical. When I think of anything hardcore, its quick & simple little 3 chord riffs

Durrypoo, was not actually wrong with the information. Except on a few points. Thrash did NOT spawn from hardcore, it spawned from the punk bands of the seventies/early eighties. So bands like The Dead Kennedys, The Misfits, The Clash, even. Had a big influence on thrash. Now, death metal, is not really a spawn of thrash only, but also black metal. Metalcore is a somewhat of a sub-genre of metal. Some bands, i.e. Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, fall in the more metal than hardcore category.
Oh, and to clear one other thing, while I'm posting. Valas Hume, the death metal you're thinking of would be more Melodic Death, than just Death.
