Say you like pairings like Nejihina and ShikaTema, well they fought each other in the chuunin exams, Do you see what I'm say? No? I'm saying sometimes the people who fight each other become great pals, or new pairings that the fans see. Do you think this is odd? lol surprised

Yep. Lee and Gaara (which is great, not as a pairing *thoughitcanbequietadorable*) also fought and now Lee calls him Gaara-kun! XD It makes me giggle.

Most pairing, non-crack parings anyways, are put together based on what interaction has gone on between the two characters. You will find that most of these pairings are between two characters that have fought each other or had conflict in the past rather than just simple interaction.
If you take the very popular pair of SasuNaru. This pair is set up based on the rival between Sasuke and Naruto. The fact that they hate each other makes people very intiuged by this pair. In most fanfictions based on this pair, Sasuke and Naruto hate each other but in the end they fall in love. Face it, everyone wants something like that.
Another pair that has the same base but a slightly different reason is SakuIno. This pair is so popular because of the rivalry between Sakura and Ino. Them hating each other yet always being there for one another makes it interesting. Plus SakuIno has that history. They used to be friends, and who doesn't want to fall in love with their best friend? I sure did.
I supose SasNaru would be a better representaion of this topic. You mentioned how they all fought in the Chuunin exams. As Uzumaki Sakura explained it's about interaction. A rivalry spices things up too. A love hate relationship makes for an interesting Anime/Fanfic/Manga.

The only reason we even know there's gonna be romance because Kishimoto knows that like....50% of his fans are female, so ya know....Gotta make us happy. (Even though part two Naruto's hotness is enough for me. XD)
