When I went there, I didn't notice/hear any sort of racist comments behind my back, I did, however, catch a few people staring at me after I walked past them. sweatdrop I turned around to look at the shoes/purse/hat/clothes the people/person had on and they were looking back at me. Pretty nerve racking at times. I tried to keep a low profile, but how could I, when I'm 5'5", bright blond, pale skinned, and green eyed? Honestly, I knew it was a losing battle to begin with. It was sort of cute to have a boy confess that he "fell in love with me at first sight". In Chinese of all languages... (I know a bit of that one too). heart And the time a random guy asked to do a purikura with me. rofl Though if you're there long enough, you'll start staring at foreigners too. It's pretty funny. I think I stared at another woman who had blond hair for a good 2 minutes. sweatdrop You just have to meet the right people and keep them close at hand, then your time will be great there! heart

It's okay. Since I'm female, of course I got stared at when I'm 5'5", since the typical height of females is around 4'9"-5'2". About waving to strangers, just think about if you'd do that in your country too. smile If you wave randomly at strangers there, then go right ahead. It's good to act the way you normally do in America in Japan, except you recycle a LOT more, but that's okay! heart You also walk a lot more too. Which is good cardio. You may need to be a bit more reserved in your overall personality though. The big thing is to look at what the Japanese people are doing as a whole and try to emulate it. Gosh, I hope that made some sense...

I recommend picking up the following books: Making Out in Japanese-Revised More Making Out in Japanese Outrageous Japanese and this one book that shows you a bunch of Japanese gestures (like 70 or so).
Though some of their contents are inappropriate, for the most part they are helpful and explanatory. Also, the National Geographic makes a GREAT travel guide, so try to find that too.

Oh that's another thing I forgot to mention. Eat ALL your rice. Every single grain. Do NOT put sugar (like Enju said), magi sauce, or soy sauce on your rice. Basically you should eat it plain as weird as that sounds... sweatdrop

If you lift your pinkey finger when you drink something, if you're straight, which I think you are, then you should practice not lifting it, since people would think you're gay. I had to practice not lifting that darn thing, because I'm 100% straight! What else?...I think you should cover your mouth when you yawn, but I think most people do that. sweatdrop I think you're not supposed to eat until all of your food is served at restrauants. They bring all of it at the same time anyway.
