Backstory: (info from
here) Sabin was born as one of the heirs to Figaro, but after his father's death he refused to take over the throne with his brother and left the kingdom. He decided to train as a martial artist and spent ten years training under Duncan. When Duncan's son, Vargas, attacked Edgar, Terra and Locke while they were traveling in Mt. Kolt, Sabin interfered the battle and helped his brother to defeat Vargas. He then joined Edgar & the Returners and provided valuable assistance in the fight against the Empire...
**past**
Sabin was born as prince & heir to Figaro kingdom along with his older twin brother Edgar. Being born as twin brothers, the question of succession was always the talk of the castle as people ponder whether one or both of them would be the heir to the throne. Neither of them, however, really wanted the throne as they both yearned for freedom.
The queen of Figaro died when Sabin and Edgar were still young. Sabin could not understand why the other people in the castle did not seem to care by the death of his mother. This built up his anger towards the people of the castle; to him, it seemed that just as long as the king performed his duty, the people didn't care about his well being, nor care about his family just as long as there was someone to take over the throne.
As the brothers grew up in the castle, Sabin became more and more irritated with the thought of staying in the kingdom for the rest of his life. He never stopped yearning for freedom - he didn't want to spend his life in the castle and live with restrictions. He wanted to leave everything behind and explore the vast world that he never had a chance to know.
When the Empire began to emerge and was controlling the world with force, the king of Figaro refused to have any ties with the Empire. Gestahl saw his existence as a threat, and decided that he must be eliminated. The king was poisoned, and the people in the castle panicked as the death of the king drew near. Edgar and Sabin watched helplessly as their father slowly withered away. People around them could only talk about who would take over the throne, and Sabin felt disgusted at their words. His heart was sinking at the thought of his father dying, yet everyone else didn't seem to care.
The king muttered his last wish to the Matron before his death. Matron passed his words to Edgar and Sabin; that their father wished for both of them to take over the kingdom. Sabin was enraged; his father just passed away, and the first thing the Matron could talk to them about was succession, the topic that he hated all his life. He recalled that no one cared when his mother died either. Not wanting to hear another word on succession, he ran up to the castle's roof top to get away from everyone.
As Sabin stood on top of the castle and cried over his father's death, Edgar came up to see him. Sabin claimed that he would leave this 'war-sicken' realm once and for all. He pointed out that Edgar himself was sick of it all, but Edgar stated that their father would be disappointed if they both left the kingdom. Sabin could not find a reply to his words. Finally, Edgar suggested that they settle everything with a coin toss. If it lands on head, they will choose their own paths, with no regrets. Sabin silently agreed and watched Edgar toss the coin to the sky.
It landed on head. Sabin chose to leave, Edgar chose to stay. Sabin soon left the kingdom without looking back. Only ten years later would he know that the coin toss was fixed - that the coin his brother used was double-headed.
After leaving Figaro castle, Sabin met up with Duncan, who was arguably the best martial artist in the world. Sabin soon became a student of Duncan's and spent most of his days in the mountains training under Duncan. Duncan's son, Vargas, was jealous at Sabin, and he saw Sabin as an enemy. Sabin martial art skills developed quickly under Duncan's guidance, and Duncan decided that he would pass his Blitz skills to Sabin.
Ten years after Sabin left the castle, he was finally reunited with his brother again in Mt.Kolts while he was hunting down Vargas for the murder of Duncan. After he found out his brother was heading over to the Returners' hideout to plot their strategy for the war against the Empire, he agreed to join them in their fight to put an end to the Empire and bring peace to the world...
When Vargas, Sabin's rival, heard that his father, Duncan, decided to choose Sabin as his successor, Vargas was enraged and murdered his father. He then headed to Mt.Kolts to look for Sabin so he could get rid of Sabin once and for all. In Mt.Kolts, Vargas ran into Edgar, Terra and Locke. Vargas thought that they were sent there by Sabin, and he attacked the group.
**game**
This is where Sabin first appeared in the game as he showed up and interrupted the battle. He explained to Vargas that Duncan had chose Vargas as his successor afterall, but Vargas didn't believe him. Vargas attacked Sabin, and Sabin had no choice but to counterattack him with a Blitz move. Vargas could not believe that Duncan has taught Sabin Blitz moves already, and Sabin explained to him that if he wasn't so hungry for power, Duncan would've taught him the Blitz moves as well. Vargas then disappeared in defeat, and Sabin finally realized his brother was standing *right* there when Edgar called his name ^^ (well, I thought Sabin would've realized that Vargas was attacking Edgar, but Sabin seemed pretty surprised when Edgar called his name after the battle, as if he didn't know Edgar was there all along ^^).
After finding out that Edgar was heading for the Returner's hideout to plot their strategy against the Empire with Banon, Sabin asked if he could join them in their fight. Sabin stated that he has been watching the world from afar, hoping that it would regain some sanity. But at this rate, Figaro kingdom would be reduced to a puppet state. Edgar was more than happy to have Sabin join them, and together they headed to the Returner's hideout.
When they arrived to the Returner's hideout, they discussed Terra's situation with Banon. Banon asked Terra for her help, but Terra still had uncertainties. Sabin assured her that she could trust his brother.
Terra eventually agreed to help them, but as the Returners were discussing their next move, news arrived that South Figaro had been taken over by the Empire, and the Imperial troops are now heading to the Returner's hideout. Edgar asked Locke to head to South Figaro to slow the Imperial troops down while they escape to Narshe. Banon, Terra, Sabin and Edgar escaped using a raft to travel down the Lete River. However, they ran into Ultros, and the resulting battle caused Sabin to be separated from the party.
Sabin was sent all the way to an area near Doma kingdom by the strong currents of the river. He ran into Shadow and asked him for a way to get to Narshe. Shadow informed him that he could only get there through Doma, but Doma will soon to be attacked by Imperial troops. Shadow then agreed to show Sabin the way, but he would leave whenever he feels like it.
Together, the two sneaked into the Imperial base, and they saw the Imperial troops attacking Doma Castle, but the troops were chased back by the retainer of Doma Kingdom, Cyan. As the two sneaked further into the base, they overheard that General Leo was summoned by Gestahl to return to Vector immediately. With Leo gone, Kefka took matters into his own hands. He decided to defeat the people of Doma by poisoning the river which served as Doma's water supply. Sabin tried to stop Kefka, but the Imperial soldiers prevented him from getting to Kefka. Kefka poured the poison into the river. When Cyan finally noticed that the water was poisoned, he, along with a Sentry, tried to look for survivors, only to find that everyone else was killed, including the king, Cyan's wife and their son. Enraged, Cyan ran out the castle to battle the Imperial soldiers alone. Sabin and Shadow (if he had not run off yet ^^) joined Cyan and helped him to defeat the troops. Sabin suggested that they escape using the Magitek armors. Cyan had a tough time learning how to control the thing though, which caused Sabin to be very frustrated at him ^^
They escaped the Imperial base, and Cyan told Sabin that the only way to Narshe was to travel through a forest nearby. As they walked through the forest they saw a train, and Sabin gladly jumped in. Cyan and Shadow followed him, and they found out that the train was in fact the Phantom train which carries the dead to the other world. Sabin panicked and immediately tried to find a way out of the train (but he still managed to find time to eat at the diner on the train ^^). The three got to the engine room, and after a battle with the GhostTrain, the train stopped and let them leave.
They found themselves at Baron Falls. They decided to jump in and travel to the Veldt by water (This is as far as Shadow would go - probably not wanting to jump into a waterfall and get himself wet...heh ^^). As they get washed up to the shores of the Veldt, they spotted a young boy named Gau. After giving Gau some food (and having Gau annoyed the hair out of Sabin ^^), Gau showed them a device he found that would allow them to breathe underwater. So it's back into the water again for Sabin and co. as they jumped into Serpent Trench in order to get to Nikeah. (which would make this the third time Sabin had traveled from one place to another by finding a river to jump into - who says you need an airship to travel the world? ^^) At Nikeah, they got on a ferry which took them to Narshe. (thus ending this really long sub-scenario with Sabin O_o)
When Locke arrived with Celes and Sabin arrived with Gau and Cyan, words came that the Empire has launched an attack on Narshe. Banon and Edgar decided that they needed to protect the Esper found in Narshe's cave. After the battles with the Imperial troops and Kefka, The troops retreated from Narshe for the time being. When the Returners checked on the Esper, a strong reaction occurred between Terra and the Esper, and Terra flew away uncontrollably.
At this point you get to choose who you take along in your party, so Sabin doesn't play a specific role anymore. I'll just briefly summarize what happensThe party headed off to the direction Terra flew away to, and they eventually found her at Zozo. ( on the way they will pass Figaro castle, and if you have both Edgar & Sabin in the party this is where the coin toss flashback occurs ). Ramuh was with Terra, and he asked the party to go to the Magitek factory to rescue his Esper friends, as one of them would able to help Terra recover her memory. So, they split up to two groups again - one will stay at Narshe while the other head to Magitek Factory. The party going to Magitek Factory needed a form of transportation, so they headed down to the Jidoor/Opera house area for help. They heard words about Setzer and his airship, the Blackjack, so they had Celes pose as the singer Maria, whom Setzer was planning to kidnap. They got into Setzer's airship when he abducted Celes, and after some convincing they got him to help them. ( If you have Edgar & Sabin at this scene, Sabin would find out about Edgar's coin here ). So they arrived to the factory, retrieved the magicites of the Espers, and headed back to Zozo. Terra recovered her memory with the Maduin Esper, and they headed off to the Sealed Gate to the Esper world to have Terra convince the Espers to help them. The Espers went berserk when the gate opened, and as the party tried to escape Edgar lost control of the airship and crash landed in the Empire's territory.
At the same time, the Returners launched an attack on Vector, only to find the city already in flames. The Emperor expected the party's arrival and invited them for dinner, stating that he had a change of heart. At dinner, the Emperor stated that he had been wrong the whole time, and that he wanted to end this war. He asked Terra to talk to the Espers to help them understand that the war was over. Knowing that the Emperor couldn't be trusted, Locke and Terra went to find the Espers with General Leo while Sabin and the rest of the party stayed at Vector to find out the Emperor's true plans.
It turns out that Emperor had no thoughts on peace as his true plan was to use Terra to lure the Espers, and then have Kefka turn all the Espers into magicites. Sabin & co. escaped Vector before the Emperor could do anything to them, as Edgar managed to find out about the whole plan while flirting with some girl in the castle ^^ They met up with Locke and Terra in Thamasa.
Soon after, Emperor Gestahl and Kefka found the three goddess statues. They disturbed the balance between the statues and a part of the earth became a floating island as a result. Kefka then betrayed Gestahl and took the powers of the statues into his own possession. Kefka then moved the statues out of alignment to completely destroy the balance between the 3 statues, causing the face of the world to change. The Blackjack was unable to escape through this chaos and it was completely destroyed while it was still in mid-air, and the whole party was separated, not knowing the whereabouts of each other.
One year passed since Kefka caused the re-alignment of the face of the world, and Sabin still has not been able to reunite with his companions. While he was wandering around in Tzen one day, Kefka unleashed his Light of Judgment on the town, which caused a lot of the buildings in town to fall apart. Sabin heard that there was still a child inside a house which was about to collapse, and he was forced to support the house from collapsing with his ever-so-inhuman strength ^^ (seriously though...I know Sabin's strong - but holding up a building on his own? Uh...no. Unless he used magic or something *shrugs* )
Luckily, Celes showed up and went into the house to rescue the child, so Sabin could finally let the house go ^^ Sabin gladly joined Celes to fight against Kefka.
After finding Edgar as Gerad in Nikeah, they traveled to Kohlingen to find Setzer, who got a new airship for them. With it, you can go to Duncan's house with Sabin in your party. Sabin, after all this time thinking that Duncan was dead, was reduced to tears when he saw his master alive and well. Duncan laughed, and assured Sabin that he was fine and all ^^ He told Sabin that it was time to complete his training, and he taught Sabin the ultimate Blitz move - Bum Rush. He then told Sabin to go take care of Kefka for good.
After traveling around the world and reuniting with their other companions, they went to Kefka's domain to put an end to him once and for all. (and make sure you have your whole party when you go meet Gau's father with Gau and Sabin in your party. The resulting scene is hilarious ^^) When Kefka questioned why they were all battling so hard when they knew life would end no matter what they do, Sabin stated that he would fight to stay alive, because the love of his brother brought him happiness in life (um, and I do mean brotherly love here ^^). Thus, the final battle began as the group of 14 people, acting as the world's only hope, fought against the ultimate evil...
Sabin, along with all his companions, went to crash the little destroying-the-world party that Kefka was having in his tower. At the final showdown with Kefka, Kefka questioned their motives for risking their lives in order to save the dying world. When Kefka asked if they have found 'joy' in this dying world, Sabin stated that he had come to experience anew the love of his brother. The final battle ensured, and Kefka was defeated. Kefka's tower, once a structure that brought so much fear and terror into the world, began to crumble to pieces. The party rushed to the Falcon to avoid being buried with the tower, with Terra leading the way.
(At this point, each character has his/her own little segment in the ending. Sabin is not a mandatory character to complete the game, so he appeared in his own ending with Edgar only ;_; )
Sabin's ending with Edgar
Sabin's ending sceneEdgar, Sabin, Celes and Setzer came across a locked door. As Edgar tries to pick the lock, a beam above him collapsed, and Sabin ran over to catch the beam just in time before it crushed Edgar. Edgar continued to pick the lock as Sabin stated that he didn't abandon the kingdom, and that he left Figaro because he knew Edgar would be a better king. Sabin trained hard, knowing that he have to help his brother one day (and claiming that now he knows why he has those stupid muscles ^^). Edgar then got the door open, Sabin threw the beam away, and the four ran out the door, with Edgar doing his finger-wiggling pose at the end.
I like to point out that although it is Edgar & Sabin's ending segment, Edgar did not have a single line in this segment ^^ Sabin was the one who did all the talking, so this ending was more about Sabin as it revealed the fact that he still cared about the kingdom and his brother. Edgar revealed nothing in this ending segment (other than the fact that he can pick locks ^^). I guess it's a fair trade-off, since Sabin didn't get to appear in other characters' segments like Edgar did, so Sabin deserved more spotlight in his ending with Edgar ^^
In the end, everyone escaped, Terra didn't fade away like all the Espers did, and they sailed across the world in the Falcon. The earth was green again, plants were growing again, people were rebuilding homes, Katarin had a baby, and everyone lived happily ever after...or so it seemed ^^ A very happy ending where the heroes won. (as if you would expect otherwise ^^)
