That our Government has problems. Well, so does every government.

So, the question is what to do about it, if we could. In the completely imaginary situation in which communism was possible, it would be the best choice. however, the closest that has ever been managed for an extended period of time was just a case of Authoritarian Socialism (Soviet Union). There are many examples of succesfull Deomcratic Socialist States (See Sweden). There is also an excellent example of a constitutional monarchy (Norway).

What system do all of you think would be the best to govern by, what problems/situations it would resolve, and what the shortcomings of your proposed system would be? Keep in mind human nature (being either optimistic or pessimistic), and current global issues.

If you would also include why your idea would be better than a different one... but that is not necessary.

Actually give it another 50 years and Communism would be the best answer.
Grr...I need to find the book that explains that again...

Actually my favorite is one that I have created for a book series, sepomism.

Now, because none of you have ever read my books... talk2hand I will explain sepomism. It is were the entire world, or at least as many countries as will accept it, are completely governed by people who have no connection at all with the world. As young children, six or seven people are selected to be the sepoms, the absolute and unquestionable rulers of the world. They are thought a special language, which replaces their native one. They learn as much of the history of the world as possible and have a sense of equality and righteousness instilled in them. They are given the job of governing the entire planet at age 30. As they are completely away from everyone who is not a sepom they are uncorrupt and will not become corrupt.

Monarchy without hereditary rule. The first few kings in a bloodline are (almost) always geniuses, but then the less... noble... traits tend to surface.
Actually, what I think would be a good idea:
-Have three main government bodies: One based on representation by class, one by population, and one by geographic location. In order to pass a law, it must be passed in two out of the three areas.
-Elect all officials for life unless deposed: Therefore, political scheming is kept to a minimum.
-Aristocracy of talent! No, seriously: the smartest/most talented people get the best ranks. ^_^ Now, if only there was some way to implement it...

Alternate form of government: Rule by the ones with the mad metaphysical skills! I've been contemplating buying out part of southern Siberia or the Northwest US (although I obviously don't have the money to do so, XD).

How many people in this guild have read "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, or "1984" by George Orwell?

I actually like the idea of a Republic. I believe that some people understand politics better than others. Not everyone understands politics as much as they would like because you have to do a lot of thinking outside the box and think of long term causes and effects of your actions. I think those voted in a Republic can stay there unless they are challenged by another candidate. If an offical was elected for life, then he/she could do or not do whatever he wanted with no accountability.

Democracy has some large flaws associated with it unfortuneatly. People tend to vote themselves more benefits which costs the government money and makes taxes increase, etc. Many people who vote are also not knowledgable about what their voting on, simply due to the fact that not everyone has a political mindset.

Socialism would only work in a soceity that made very sure that everyone was contributing. If everyone was adding into the pot, then socialism would work. Socialism fails when people stop contributing and live off of others.

I think that politicians, before they run for office should all have to take some type of test that measures their common sense. The test wouldn't be based on intelligence, just common sense and the ability to comprehend one's actions and their consequences. The results of the test would be made public so that voters could see how prepared the candidtates really are.

"1984" is one of my favorite novels. I cannot, however, comment on this topic, as politics is something I really do not like to get into.

I've read 1984. I liked it at the time, but it's been a couple years.

Assuming an honest benevolent person could be put in power, I'd say a monarchy would be the best way to rule. You've got one mind directing any military or social campaign which would cut down on all the in-fighting and vetoing.

But no monarchy is going to be able to sustain benevolency forever, as rulers die and are replaced by heirs.

If we could take the "representative" out of representative democracy I think the United States would have it down pretty well.

Ok. If I can't be made Prince of the World, then I vote we move straight towards a Asimovian future, and have the Earth governed by supersmart computers named Multivac.

I'll admit that I'm ignorant of politics, so that people don't throw as many stones at me for being politically-inept.

But my vision of a 'perfect' government is that eveyone governs themselves. Trusting others to act on their morals.

Granted, it's going to have errors. But all forms of government do.

that's my two cents.

A Very Libertarian point of view. Nothing wrong with that, in my book. (Save that I am highly pessimistic when it comes to dealing with large groups of people)

I read 1984, but not the other. Of course, I also saw Equilibrium, so that's alright. mrgreen

I vote (heh) constitutional monarchy as the most balanced between competence and human nature. Royals to gawp at and gossip about, politicians with slightly less worry about looking pretty for reporters (see previous comment about royals). Helps everyone focus on their jobs.

Need I remind anyone that the US is a republic, not a democracy? I just think that's important. I also think it's important to point out that the larger a country is, the more difficult it is to run properly (different areas/demographics/situations require different solutions). I'm impressed America is still up and running, really. I keep expecting us to implode any moment.

Much like Communism, I'm afraid I don't see Anarchy working either as long as actual humans are involved. Sorry. That's my cynical b*****d coming through. Ditto for socialism, though it takes longer to show up. Eventually you get whole generations of people who figure they get the same benefits regardless of whether or not they do any work, so they sit about on the dole and laugh at workers. Amazingly, this causes economic collapse. I believe I saw somewhere that no single drop of water believes it is responsible for the flood...
