Many graphic artists and
magazines frown upon
filters. Many online Photoshop
contests i.e. Worth1000 etc
disqualify any of those who use
them in contes entries.
Many othyer people say it's just an assistant.
What do you think?

I think filters are just an assistant. They dont make the art what they are. That's like saying to ail painter that a paint brush is cheating.

I think it's an assistant. It helps give a nice style to your artwork. Similar to using charcoal on a watercolor art. It adds an interesting style that could be extremely hard to accomplish otherwise.

not many. some filters are very trashig!

and imo a good designer dont need much filters. he makes the effects by his/her own skills.

the filters just make you're life easier, but personaly I haven't downloaded any extra filter's, cuz i would have a mess, ppl tell me they make a mess when u instal them.

i agree with you that filter make some work steps easier but if i see pictures only made with filters i get nightmares ..

Yeah, alot of starters just use a filter and some text and that's it. In fact, that's what I did when I first started. x_x

with a clever enough mixture of filters it can make some really neat effects.

Agreed.
I personally use
the Noise
and Gaussion
Blur the most.
Mostly for touch up effects on an effect.

I rarely use the Filters, if I do use them it will usually only be for the option Lighting Effects and Blurs, I find it is the best way to get a cute bubble look.

but otherwise I tend to use the layer style (blending options) tool, I find it is much easier to use anyway. 3nodding
eg. This one I used no Filters

I think it came out great anyway, even though I didnt use any filters.

real filters are really hard to make!!!

but most people use brush to cheat to make filters unstead
that's why it looks like a cheap way! ...

but it's really hard!!!

the lines are real filters!
i made them out of lens flare!
this banner took me mroe than an hour to make because of the filters!
if i remember well ... this is 15 layers!!! ><

Filters are different effect you can add...

Umm, I have to sy that I like the ripple effect and the gaussian and motion blur.. other than that I don't really use them much.. but the blurs are REALLY nice to have, I find they help the render blend in.. (mind you this was more before I got sed to smudging) I do use lighting effect sometimes too

*confession* I used the clouds one once when I got lazy redface

But yeah, I find I use them less and less as time wears on.
