Now that we've established some of what we believe to be true, lets go and debunk, or talk about the stuff that we know is wrong, or propagated by hollywood or pop culture. For instance-- evocation has a lot of these examples, some of which including that evocation is either easy peasy or you must recieve a doctorates in evocation before attempting to evoke a teensy weensy little blip of a supernatural critter.
Edit (01/02/07 7:44 PM CST): Due to stupidity on my part, I have changed this topic's name. I should have known better than to name it what I did. ****This is the last time I will ask people to stop flaming about Catholics or Wiccans in regard to this topic's former name "The Satan Worshipping Wiccan and Other Hollywood Myths". **** The next person to do so will be warned and this topic will be put straight into the recycle bin. The very last thing I want to do is get people to be devisive. We're all friends here, so please don't flame anybody else's beliefs. I'm sorry about all the confusion.

and I hate the catholics that disown their brothers cause they are gay, or enjoy nature than more reading bible or because they are mentally challenged.
(My grandmother is like that and I wore a pentacle and had to explain what it meant to her. she finally had nothing to say. she cant say what I choose to do in my life. she knows I'm on the other side of the world and in another of my own in my mind. )
I hate people who think roleplaying is for satan lovers and I hate jesus lady on the bus telling everyone what to believe and that they should all belevie in the powers of jesus. Also she shouldnt go around advertising that she has Jesus Juice with her. that doesnt sound right.

Woah, I didn't mean to start a flame war here. Calm down. Let's keep to topic a little. How about the fairies that hollywood portrays? Pixies in tights? Flower sprites? Come on.

Angels having gender? What do you guys think about this? There's some debate as to whether or not they actually have gender. Most of the historical confusion comes about when referrencing the Nephilim.
I don't honestly know, so I can't even make an educated guess.
And vampires... turning into mist, garlic, running water? Which of the reputed characteristics do you think are based on myth and legend? Which of these do you think were made up?
Here's my opinion: Turning into mist-- highly doubt it; however, I do think it could be possible. There are a lot of legends about supernatural creatures and mist, especially in places like Ireland, Wales, and places in Eastern Europe.
Garlic? Seems credible-- garlic actually is a plant that has a natural ability to contain positive energy. Nicotiana (tobacco family) is another one of these plants.
Running water? Maybe. Certain streams having very positive energy, it seems likely that a malevolent creature would not be able to cross it. It also seems likely that such a creature would be harmed by touching such pure waters. But, good luck finding those kinds of waters. They're pretty hard to come by.
Stakes? This does come from an old Eastern European ritual. They believed that vampires were souls trapped in the body of a deceased. Any number of things could cause a body to rise as a vampire, including an animal crossing the funeral procession. They have many very old rituals regarding how to deal with such a thing.
Crosses? Probably the most possible of the rest. Since many legends regarding vampires describe them as stuck between life and death, it makes perfect sense that a cross would repel them. Crosses can symbolize the joining of worlds, elements, or even the process of passing through life and death. See the Superstitions topic for further information.

Angels are often depicted as female... Biblically they are often refered to as young men (Lot's visitors in Sodom; the angel that wrestled Jacob, the young men outside Jesus's tomb) or by masculine names (Michael, Gabriel, others). I'm Christian, so I can't say how they're represted in other faiths, though I know they exist. As for the depictions of female angels. That's most often related to the Christmas story. The heavenly choir/host and women just seem to have voices people are more inclined to discribe as heavenly or angelic.
Personally, I think as heavenly being, they can be whatever is needed at the time. If you're going to listen to a man telling you something better than a woman (as in Biblical times they did) they would be male. In modern times, women are seen as more protective and nurturing so now they are more inclined to appear as women. ^^
I sat down to draw and angel one day, having been inspired by a song and made sure to draw it on the line. There was no way to tell if it was male or female.

I do understand about the stakes, Lila-chan, but what doesn't make sense is why is it every kind of wood. When people regard Rowans as spiritual trees, I'd think that only stakes made from Rowan wood be possible. >>" and the pentacles drive me crazy when they have it pointing up, my mom freaks out, and I have to explain its only bad if its pointed down. They basically take the paranormal to a whole new level to only make people paranoid and scared of the unexplained. It's like Stonehenge, and Sedona, Arizona. They have a magnetism to the land, people have the same effect with different things like towards haunted houses, areas around the world, etc. They all go for different reasons, and some of the people are a little bit off, but then isn't everyone, at some point?
With the angelic theory, I believe that there is only gender of angel, neutral. However, they can take on the form of anything or anyone, doesn't matter male or female, animal or human.

I think the Angels have no gender. They cannot reproduce, if I've been told right, so it makes sense that they would be non-sexual.

Katanas Blade I think the Angels have no gender. They cannot reproduce, if I've been told right, so it makes sense that they would be non-sexual. They can have sexes and not reproduce. You don't randomly reproduce, do you? Then again they could have sexes but lack the ability to reproduce.
