Today was awful.
It was our annual Thanksgiving day
game against our rival school.
It is really cold & rainy near me.
We didn't have to wear uniforms, just
sneakers, jeans, whatever on top, and warmers.
The half time decision was going to be made right
before half time. All of us hoped we weren't going to
march. No one could feel their fingers. (Yeah we
have gloves but they're uber thin.) Mine got wet
so I had to take them off- otherwise it would have
been worse.

So we were then told we were going to march.
At that point it had stopped raining and the only
things making us uncomfortable were us being soaked
and not being able to feel our fingers. After we set up to
go onto the field, my director changed his mind and we
were just going to play in an arc. Okay, fine. That's easier.
It was so much colder and had started to rain again.
We got onto the field to play and throughout the first two parts
my fingers were getting number. It got to the point where I
couldn't tell if I was touching the keys or not. Then I started
to get nauseous and my fingers hurt and it was so hard to
move them. I was in so much pain that I was close to crying.
My friend next to me was all: Are you okay? Can you move
your fingers? Neither can I. During the third part I felt so sick that I just kept my flute
down & tried to keep myself collected. When it was finally over I was
really light headed and dizzy. I walked over to the guard coach with
my friend and she had me sit with another girl who felt sick. Then we
went up to the press box. When we were going to go into the band room,
our band decided to leave.

The recovery was so long. It was awful. My finger tips are still
kind of weird.

'Nother story: On the first day of marching outside at band camp
this summer, my friend, who was a noob, got stung by a bee
within the first 10 minutes of being outside.
Then a while later when we were learning sets she had an asthma
attack and fell forward. It was pretty scary, but she had her inhaler.
What was weird was that we were just standing in set at the time.

I've fallen down the stairs at a jazz band concert. It was last year in eighth grade. I had my alto sax and my friend gave me a little nudge. I tripped over my skirt and down I went! I fell down a flight and my teacher freaked out hardcore.

And my alto sax remained unharmed.

And then a couple of weeks ago, my friend lost control of his tuba case on the same set of stairs and it nearly crushed me!

Our shoes hurt so much to march in.. so many people end up limping after every competition... or at least the ones that try to march.

The guard shoes are worse cuz the guard can't wear socks, so once this one girl's foot (the back, near the heel) just started bleeding during the competition, right before step-off. It got all over her dress and everything. mad eww

First year of marching, we found out that the parking lot where we practiced on was inaccurate with the football field. It was missing about a 1/5th of the field due to a median.
Well, I was marchign backwards and tripped on the curb. In that same set, I ran into other people.

Second year of marching, we were doing a run through and there was a hard set. I was marching backwards at a huge step size rate.
A girl behind me lost ehr balance and fell. I tripped over her and fell, and the girl in front of me, tripped over me and fell.

This year, I walked into a pole.
It was dark and it was the same color as the ground. sweatdrop xp

Our band just has the stand stuff. Broken arms from Frisbee, blown out knees, dehydration, etc.

I think the worst that's happened to me was when I was marching at a large backwards angel and the trumpit behind me didn't move quick enough. I steppen on him and I fell. (We pratice on the parking lot whee ) So that really hurt, but then my drum came up and smacked me in the face after I landed. Now the back of my rack is all scratched up, but the actual drum was saved. stare

Our former tuba player somehow injured his foot differently every year.

One of our band parents needed stitches from slicing his hand on a field show prop.

A pit girl hit her head on the accessory stand, and had to be taken to the hospital after the field show, and after our band director got on the pit's case for not playing in-time.

Okay, I always have something happen to me on band tour (or during practice).

1st Year: On a tour around the NE I ended up with a severe case of whooping cough and still managed to march every performance (coughing during the loud parts).

2nd Year (the year of hell): I sprained my ankle the SECOND DAY of band tour and then had to sit on the side lines for a week and missed a show. Then I got a chill from sitting in the rain and got really, really sick and I couldnt stop throwing up so I had to get a shot. And then the antibiotics they gave me ended up giving me horrible acid reflux which was one of the most painful experiences of my life. Ouch. Only missed one show though, so I was quite proud of myself.

3rd Year: Had reaccuring twistings of the same ankle as the year before during practice. Band tour was in S. Korea and a lot of the band members got heat exhaustion (including myself). I also got food poisoned on our ONE DAY OFF. And was horribly ill for 24 hours and then had to sit out of rehearsal for another week because the heat and my illness didnt go well together. I kept on fainting. razz

Yikes!

Oh and then in the second year the last few charts involved a rotating block and I was in the dead center (so I marked time) and I had contras rotating around me. They crashed into me SO many times and when I went to the dentist later that year they asked me if I had had any blows to the head because the enamel on my front teeth were cracked! sweatdrop

I feel I think like 4 times during the marching season, luckily all, but one was during practice. The other time we were at a game and my foot caught on to the bottom of the lower bench, causing me to fall. All the rest of the times I fell from backmarching. As time progressed I got good at it though. n__n" So it's been awhile since I fell.

Two years ago my clarinet mouthpiece went up my nose, causing my nose to bleed. I think that's something I will never forget. ><

smacked by bass drums and the like. have no feeling in my hands, elbows, backside(gluteus maximus); knees are basically scar tissue; ankles' been sprained a few times so they pop all the time. nothing major, but and i know one day, i'll be falling off that drum major's podium soon enough.

The 06 season was the worst season for my schools marching band because we had 20 PEOPLE injured durning the season that caused then to miss at least one contest. We had more injuries then the Football team and Cross Country team combined, plus we had one person that was injuried for almost the entire season.

Our field has a lot of crab grass clumbs, so that's annoying. I was backwards marching and I suddenly found myself on my a** because I tripped over a clump of crab grass.

There was this incident where this girl got injured while backmarching: her leg slipped back and she landed onher leg, resulting in torn ligaments eek add to that, the bass clarinet player in front of her was backmarching towards her and did not notice her fall, so he kept going and he fell over her...then the person in front of him fell over both of them and it resulted in a human domino effect...yeah, thank goodness I was on the opposite side.

I also have weak knees, so sometimes my knees would buckle and I couldn't march anymore. That sucked.
