Rare that I actually make topics, but here we go.

When would you define someone as an alcoholic? It seems like such a dirty label to place on someone, so it'd be nice to at least define it first.

Its an addiction. Its what people use as a crutch to trudge through life. They abuse it because it places a veil over their dreary existence so that it makes living possible. Their lives sometimes take a turn for the worse and they rely on it in hopes to ease their pain and drown away reality.

Its really no better than any illegal narcotic. It warps your perception of reality to the point where you are dependent on it and need it to get through life. Like I said, a crutch.

Your diatribe never actually answered the question.

Personally, I'd describe it as someone who -NEEDS- alcohol. I've drank before, I'll drink again... but I know that I don't need it to be happy/funny/stupid/ect. When it gets to the point where you need alcohol to forget about things, to have fun, or anything of the like, I think that's when it might be crossing into the realm of Alcoholism.

When one drinks an excessive amount (to them) on a regular basis usually with the goal to prevent their problems.

Not all alcoholics need the alcohol.

I'll be smart and look it up on dictionary.com ;
Alcoholism: a chronic disorder characterized by dependence on alcohol, repeated excessive use of alcoholic beverages, the development of withdrawal symptoms on reducing or ceasing intake, morbidity that may include cirrhosis of the liver, and decreased ability to function socially and vocationally.

My mom and step-dad are both alcoholics. Basically, they DO need that alcohol, and it becomes more important than a lot of things. It's really hard to deal with to live with an alcoholic, and it IS a very dirty and shameful title. I only give it to those who truly fit it.

I would define an alcoholic as someone who has reached the point where their alcohol consumption is interfering with their work life and/or social life. They use the alcohol to cheer themselves up and escape life problems.

someone is an alcoholic if they can only get through their days and life with a constant dose of alcohol. Not that once in a while recreational dose, the several mind-numbing doses that build up clinking bottles and crushed cans everywhere.

The kind where people use it as the easiest form of Zoloft, if you catch my drift.

Basically when the person is addicted. Don't give me that "I can stop any time" crap. Even if a person can stop, they're not going to, nor do they want to. They keep doing it. That would be what I consider an addiction.

If that's the case I have an addiction for beating myself up. It's a really bad habit, and it's tearing me apart. Think there's a rehab for such?

When Alcohol is Interupting their Daily Activities.

When They NEED, not WANT, but NEED a drink, at least 4 times a week.

When that's where over 50% of their money goes towards. As soon as they get it.

When they drink alone, in order to try to feel "better". Or even not alone..

When they feel they can't get by without at least a shot or two in 'em..

When they become violent due to not being able to obtain alcohol.

You could say that it's when people use it for the sole purpose of being happy but they could just be making the choise consciously and not actually be addicted. There are people who are excessive on smoking or drinking, but if they really wanted to break the habit it wouldn't take much at all.

I think alcoholism is going beyond emotional need to being chemically dependent. When someone goes through withdrawal when they don't have it for a certain amount of time, then I would say they are suffering from alcoholism. It doesn't necessarily mean having to be happy to have it or not, because either way they know they aren't happy anymore. It is a chemical dependence in which if they don't take it, it causes severe withdrawal symptoms like nauseau, fever, depression, anxiety, etc etc.

I'm not at all an expert but that's my view on it.

Here in Mexico, every time you see someone who just drinks a lot once in a while, you can immediately call him alcoholic. College students are even separated by their degrees of alcoholicism. The scale goes like this: writers, philosophers, civil engineers, psychologists, artists, mechanical engineers, historians, chemical engineers, architects, industrial engineers, marketeers, networking managers, environmental engineers, accountants, electronic engineers, and computer engineers at the bottom of the alcoholism scale. (I'm not saying my computing friends are geeks, but they all seldom drink anything).

But I have enough brain to know when someone is actually an alcoholic. You're one when you meet these conditions:
  • You get drunk more than once every week.
  • You can't control your drinking: once you take a little sip of beer, you won't stop drinking until you're completely hammered in the floor.
  • People around you are being affected by your drinking.
  • You're having financial trouble because of your drinking, unless you're as rich as Paris Hilton, the only person in the world that can afford to be an alcoholic.
  • You need to drink in order to feel good; otherwise, you feel like s**t.

i think someone is alcoholic when they drink more than 'just a few bottles of beer'.
it depends on the person, i mean, if you can imagine said person in your mind, but they just happen to be holding a glass, simply because most of your memories of that persos include, somewhere, alcohol, then yeah, i'd say thats alcoholic.
when someone drinks alcohol, not for the flavor, or the buzz, or because there are people around, but rather just because, or maybe they want to drown their sorrows, when they drink more than five times a day, i'd say thats alcoholic. but of course thats assuming they keep it up, and the next day they drink the same amount. i'd say thats alcoholic.
if my dad started drinking a bottle of red wine a night, i'd think he was alcoholic. alcoholism is... case specific. with more information, maybe i could help you, but im sorry if i .. fall short.
