*creepy shadowed-guy-in-woods-at-night voice*

I ain't sure how many of you 'ave heard of the Jersey Devil, but there be stories of a monster livin' in the woods of New Jersey.

In most sightings, the creature is said to stand on two hooved legs and be able to fly, but many folks see different things. It's mostly said to have a horse-like head with red glowin' eyes, a long neck, and a tail o' some sort. They say its high-pitched scream sounds human.

There are many tales of the creation of the Jersey Devil too. They say a woman known as nothin' more than Mother Leeds gave birth to her 13th child in 1735. One version of the story says she was sick of havin' children and cursed her child to be taken by the Devil. The story says the child turned into some winged monster, ate the other 12 kids, and flew away inter the woods. Other stories say that Mother Leeds merely locked her baby in the cellar, and that it escaped and went inter the woods to become some sorta unseen animal. And there's also a story, says Mother Leeds was a witch who was cursed.

Whate'er the creature may be, there have been many sightings of strange happenin's and tells of terrible screams comin' from the Jersey Woods. It's been seen as early as 1841, and there was thousands o' sightin's in January of 1909. One witness e'en claims to have shot the creature through one of it's wings, and still watched it fly away unharmed.

So, does yer believe there's somethin' in the Jersey Woods? Does yer? I know I ain't e'er goin' in there after dark.

I don't believe in El Chupacabra, but I do think there's something in Loch Ness. Where did you hear about the celeocanth carcass sighting?

Maybe I'll update this thread with info on other myth creatures too.

Feh, I've been there, at two am. Nothing was in the woods, except for a few rabbits.

Just like one sighting doesn't prove he exists, one not-sighting certainly doesn't disprove it either.

Yeah, the last line I said in the first post, I hope everyone realizes, isn't true. Of course I'd be willing to go into the Jersey Woods at night! I only said I wouldn't because I was in character, acting as that creepy guy.

I grow weary of urban legends

I dont believe it exists, I think one or two people pretended it existed perhaps because other animals dangerous lived there and they wanted to scare kids into not going there [back in 1800's], or possibly people thought they saw it and as story went through ages it grew and adapted, and then many people who found out about it propelled it by saying they to saw the creature; which is probably why in that year thousands of people saw it, because the story got out that year and everyone went to go find it and 1,000's pretended they did... of course, newspaper history could tell you that, perhaps...

I heard about the celeocanth on "Is It Real?" on National Geographic Channel

In the Pine Barrens of New Jersey it is said that there is a creature called the "Jersey Devil". I don't know if I believe in it or not because of course I have my doubts but then again, strange things go on all around us that we can't explain. Like Hangman Bridge (for those who don't know that story, refer to the post I'll be posting titled "Hangman's Bridge"). On Earth there was a party that went into the woods to search for the Jersey Devil. A woman did see something and to this day they say she wouldn't say and single word of what she saw that night. She was never quite the same afterwords. So, I'm leaning to the side of the believing genre because I'd like to think there's a creature living in the Pine Barrens. With the accounts of sightings you have to think, is it real? Why would so many people just make it up?

I saw the show that the search party was filming when that woman "saw" something. I honestly don't believe her sighting one bit. How convenient would it be that they were filming, yet couldn't find it on film, but she saw it off the camera, and won't say anything? Too convenient to be possible.

I'm honestly not scared of monsters that are basically myths. If there was something lurking in those woods, environmentalists would have found out what has been eating all of the animals in that forest or why there aren't many animals, though I doubt that that's the case. I would go out there and search myself to prove once and forall, but that can't really happen because of my geographical location compared to New Jersey. It's probably just some people trying to scare other people.
