So a lot of people b***h about which genre Tool actually is. So I plan on settling this once and for all. Well... not me, but the rest of you people who will engage your comrades in an intelligent and civilized discussion regarding what genre Tool is... hopefully.

Well, in the way you're asking here, Tool's just music. I doubt anyone would want to classify Undertow-Tool in the same genre as Lateralus-Tool. They're far too different, in my opinion.
Now-a-days, I see them as progressive rock with a somewhat metal edge to them. That metal edge was much bigger on Aenima, and it was a bit more sludgy on Undertow. On Opiate, they were really just fancy Grunge in my eyes.
Of course, this'll just go down as one of those never-ending arguments that you see Prog-Rock fans debating about time and time again -- ala What Defines Progress Rock?, and all that. Because, you know, in those things, there's always someone who's like, "OMFG, they used Middle Eastern rhythms! They must be Indo-pakistani-style experimental rock."

My opinions on Tool's genre: I never listened to Opiate. So I'm not exactly qualified to say how they sounded. I heard Opiate wasnt really that good anyways. Undertow and Aenima were definitely prog metal. They had the innovative sound of progressive music, but were heavy and complex like metal. I'm not a metal expert, but they were metal-ish enough for me. I think Laterlaus and 10,000 Days definitely leaned more towards progressive rock. They had much less of a metal sound. It was kinda like the classic 70s prog bands only with a harder edge to them.

Honestly, I can't see them being grunge. I own all of their albums, none of which are grunge. But, they are progressive metal I would say.

If you want my opinion on what they should be "labled".... Progressive Rock... they are rock, hard and soft, and they certainly have progressed.

I always thought of them as Art Metal. That's the best I've got at describing them. No, you know what I think? I think they shouldn't be labeled! Tool is Tool they are their own genre because they're that awesome! They're my favorite band ^^

Tool is Tool they are their own genre because they're that awesome! They're my favorite band ^^ If there are that many debates on their genre, they really should just be their own label. The way I see it, is if you can't decide on any on genre and they don't claim any one genre, than you shouldn't confine their art to one. (Sorry if this came out incoherant, I'm exhausted and it's only 10)

I find it easier just to say they're Prog, to tell the honest truth.
Grunge? Naw. Definitely not.

It matters mainly on what cd your listening to. Up until 10,000 days they changed alot between cds.
