What kind of plants and wildlife do you see here in the Carolinas?

I live out in the country area of SC, so I see rabbits...deer...daisies...hawks...bunches of maple trees...

My apt. complex gets wrens, hummingbirds & tiny tree frogs.
We had a pair of hawks here back one summer before the area was so developed, & they made a nest & had a baby hawk that sat in one of the trees in our parking lot area & squeaked when it's parents called to it.

Tree frogs are fun to have around your deck gardens.
They sing to you in the morning & look cute sitting in your pots' water dishes!
And they help eat the bugs around your door lights at night!

Be nice to CC, Jawz--she's going to be the one giving out the Halloween treats here at our Guild party! mrgreen

My parents live way out in the mountains at Hayesville, NC. They have seen a lot of critters. Squirrels, hummingbirds, turtles, pilated woodpeckers, turkeys...BOBCATS...BEARS....

I've seen deer in my back yard before... and I live in a neighborehood!

One time also in my backyard, I was staring at this really cute bunny who was eating some grass. The next thing I know this huge brown hawk swoops down, picks it up in its talons, and flys away. My expression was literally ' gonk '.

Haha. I've seen a deer on campus recently when driving across it... I left work and went out w/ my managers a bit... Then drove across campus to get to my apartment (fastest way rather than roads, heh) and saw a deer. Kinda funny since I'm in Charlotte to see a deer....

I bet it's deer hunting season--the deer are moving into town to avoid getting shot. They're getting hit by cars a lot, though. gonk

I live on 20 heavily wooded acres at the end of a rural subdivision. Lots of woods also surrounding us. We're regularly visited by a wide variety of wildlife.

Our property is part of the hunting territory for a mating pair of red-shoulder hawks. We've got several bird feeders and also put dried peanuts on our deck for the squirrels (mainly to keep off the bird feeders) and for the family of 5 raccoons (started with just Buddha and Georgie... yes, I named the parents... and later their three offspring; we've enjoyed watching out the kitchen door at nights... that's a close as we get to them).

We've also got bullfrogs, spring peeper frogs, several types of turtles, three varieties of ducks, egrets and a blue heron on the pond at various times of the year. We recently saw 2 does and 3 yearlings, as well as a fox.

Haven't seen any poisonous snakes in last many years... probably due to the fact that we've got A LOT of black and king snakes which tend to eat the eggs and hatchlings of the poisonous ones.

Domestically, we've got 3 dogs, 1 cat, and a dozen or so of fish. Is it any wonder why my younger son is studying to be a vet? xd

I went outside woonce and done seen a big 'ol potbelly pig just ah grazing on 'ar front lawn. I called mah Maw and Paw and they dun' believe it, but sher enuff thar it is. That thar pig done ran a quarter mile in a blink of a my pick'em up truck's faulty left head light. And we found it livin' out in da shrubs and woods in our pasture not but ah few days lat'r. Yep.

hahahaha... Actually, there really was a potbelly pig. We think it escaped its owner and it's been living out in the wild ever since. It's HUGE - fat and burly - too!!! eek I wouldn't dare try to catch that thing. If I do, there'd be no way to keep its HUGE, heavy body mass down in one place... eek And there's no way I can carry that thing... whee

In Wilmington we got owls, coons, hawks, and opossum, and gators, don't forget the Gators!
One night we had something on the roof screaming extremely loud. If you think I got out of bed to see what it was your crazy! I never want to hear that again!

We had a neighbor that was nearly blind. He fed his cats on the back porch. One night he thought he had a neighbors cat visiting. Up until he started stroking it and got to the pink scaly rat like tail. Biggest possum he'd ever seen!

Did the thing on your roof give a really creepy, wailing cry? It may have been a screech owl! Those things will scare the heck out of you the first time you hear them! eek

It's been a little too cold lately for the owls around here. I love to "talk" to them. xd

Been putting out dried peanuts for squirrels and raccoons (as well as birdseed). The peanuts have been disappearing as an alarmingly rate. We could be in for a cold winter (finally) this year.
