Ever pass out at a special event with the band?
Yes, I have, as a matter of fact...
No, but I do know someone else in our band that did.
Never happened to me or anyone else in our band.

Recently, our band played at a groundbreaking ceremony in full uniform, and it was so hot outside that two of the bandies (including me sweatdrop ) passed out and had to be taken to the clinic. The other guy had asthma, but my only excuse is that as a pit person, I was not used to being at parade rest and holding an instrument, so I probably locked my knees at one point or another.

Anyway, has anyone in your band ever fainted at some special occasion? If so, what happened?

Well, let's see. Last year the colorguard captain (thank God she graduated) kept on passing out after almost every game and/or contest...she'd hyperventilate and just collapse.

This year, I passed out after the crosstown rivalry game when we were heading to the buses afterwards. It was about 100 degrees that night (even without the uniform) and I hadn't drunk enough water, so I fainted. Thankfully one of the (really cute) male flute players was there to catch me. heart

This year, my friend who is sousa section leader passed out during band camp 'cus he locked his knees when we were playing in horn arcs. And last year during prelims at a competition, we had a quad player break his ankle during the performance....It was incredibly muddy, and if you walked across the field, you could probably find 5-10 shoes stuck in the mud. I think the guy fainted right after we got done with the closer and left the field, but he had trudged through the entire rest of the prelims performance with his broken ankle. (He broke it during the opener)

grr, pit has it better. but at this football game in parade rest before our halftime show i did get lightheaded and dizzy, and threw up right after we went for consession break. though we had been out for a good 6 hours earlier for a competition that morning.

Back in high school, I joined the district 622 marching band because they canceled marching band for the schools so we formed our own. It was our 4th of July parade and It was easily 100 plus degrees outside without uniforms. We had gotten about 3/4 of the way when a tuba friend of mine wasn't feeling well. He was our only tuba and didn't want to let us down and almost made it the whole time but he ended up managing to make it look like he was supposed to march out of the band and to the sidelines where a parent found him passed out on the sidewalk still with his tuba. That day ever band there had atleast one person drop.

No one has fainted, but during band camp there was lots of throwing up.

I was fine and so was my section, but then again, we play flutes and clairnets. So we were tired but had nothing to complain about.

Three words:

Memorial Day Ceremony.

It's held every year after the parade at this huge, historical manor in town. And the bands (both middle schools and the high school) used to have to stand for the entire 2 hour ceremony.
In the sun.

My 7th grade year I didn't go (we had my brother's grad party), and I'm really glad I didn't.
I guess there were band members dropping left and right, passing out from the heat.

Since then, they let us take a knee during the ceremony and stand when we play.

No one has passed out so far during a major event, but during band camp one colorguard girl locked her knees and fell straight down and I actually had heat exhaustion and turned pale and everything went black. It was scary. Then again heat exhaustion during band class at school. Bleh. Probably because I wear dark clothing and absorb all of the sun's heat.
