Here's a link to a little history lesson concerning PotO: Was the Phantom story real? But revised into one word: no. There are many coincidences and similar accounts that happened that took place, but the actual story in itself is not all fact. Leroux wrote his story using the type of style we call "faction" where he mixed fact and fiction so well together you can't tell whether he was really writing down actual events or not. But it's a nice thought to imagine if it was a part of actual history.

I'll have to read that link, but remember in the extras on the DVD? Emmy says that there IS a lake underneath the Opera house. And that just makes me so happy. But it is a little creepy, maybe someone could live down there! eek

But it is a little creepy, maybe someone could live down there! eek Actually, the "lake" is the Seine River. When they were building the Opera House, it obviously was in the way of the river and a couple of cellars flooded because of it. They drained it, I believe, but they couldn't do it entirely since having the water down there strengthens the sound. And it is possible to live down there since during the war the cellars were used by soldiers as a refuge.

If you'd like to learn more about the origonal Opera House as well as the Phantom story, you should check out the book, "The Complete Phantom of the Opera," by George Perry. It's a REALLY awesome book! I believe you can buy it off Amason.com for a good deal. Anyway, not only does it talk about the origional Opera House, Leroux's novel, but it also talks about all the films (excluding the latest one since this book was published in, I believe it was the late 80's), the origional Andrew L. Webber musical, aaaaaaannnd, it has all the lyrics and the whole play in the back!! There's also tons of picture, it's really great!!! 3nodding

most of it is in fact fictional. but parts of it are real like the falling chandelier and the water under the opera, that was what was first used as counter weight and stuff in the theatre and the running of productions. things like the legend of the opera ghost are simply that, legend and if you fo to most theatres anywhere in the world you'll find similar stories. having a theatre ghost is good luck for actors!

There has been a lot of research done to find out whether Erik did or did not exist. There are some pieces of evidence found over the years by people who are working to discover the truth, and the closest I have seen is that yes--there was a man who could have been Erik, though he was a little tamer than we think of Erik.

Well, supposedly there was a real story about the opera house... I read an article about it on the internet, but I have no idea where it was. The "real" story was not anywhere near as exciting as the fictional story we all know, however... I think it was some construction worker who fell in love with a performer and left her mysterious notes or something... I really don't remember.
