As the caravan rumbled along the dusty road to Tempranillo, the sea breeze barely teasing at the gypsies faces, a small stall was being set up in the middle of a grassy field. The woman working at setting up the show table was small, blonde, and clad in swaths of purple fabric that covered most of her body and face. Those parts of her skin that were exposed were fair, but pocked with unsightly sores. She did her best to cover them, but in the midst of working under the beating sun, some of the fabric had slipped.

Hearing the clatter of wheels and hooves, the woman looked up for a moment, then slowly went back to placing items on the table. Slowly, laboriously, she lowered herself onto a stool, wincing with every motion. Whatever illness plagued her obviously made life uncomfortable and hard - but the wares sitting before her looked to be bottled in the finest quality flasks, with beautiful colors and shapes, all precious glass.

"Greetings!" she called out as the caravan came close. "Greetings, travelers..." And then, gesturing to her wares, she beckoned them closer.

It was Lorelei that approached first, nervous as she was about encountering merchants from her home that would recognize her. But no, she had never seen this woman before. And so, laden with gold from various favors and jobs, she approached the table warily.

The woman smiled at her, watching with glimmering eyes. "From Tempranillo?"

Lorelei's head jerked up, staring at the woman. "... Why do you ask?"

"You carry yourself like a rich merchant's daughter. Unsure and demure."

Lorelei paled.

"You are, then. But a gypsy?"

She nodded, glancing back at her wagon where Vanna slept. "More or less," she murmured.

The woman seemed content. She changed the subject. "Are you looking for anything in particular? I sell poisons and medicines of all sorts. Some magical things, as well."

"... do you have anything to hide my identity?" Lorelei had meant to ask Valelldia or Oqaia. She really had! But if the opportunity was presenting itself...

"Why yes, I do." The woman indicated a pot of make-up and a pair of gleaming scissors. "The make-up is temporary - easy erased by the humid air of the Port. The scissors..." She paused, tilting her head in thought. Her expression was inscrutable behind the cloth wrapping her face. "Are more permanent."

The red-haired gypsy licked her lips, then looked up at the trader warily, fear winning out over better caution. "How much?"

"Seventy-five."

"Done."

And Lorelei hurried away, hiding her purchase for fear of accusations.

Emelyn

Emelyn slid down from her leadseat- excited to see the woman set up at the side of the road. Despite her peculiar looks- she was obviously hiding something behind those swaths of fabric- her setup was one of a trader. The beautiful bottles and vials whose contents glistened in the sun drew her eye- quite directly. Pierre, still white from his forest ordeal... stayed on the leadseat, his hands in his lap and his eyes cautious to the trader.

"Greetings, sister..." Emelyn said softly, her eyes trained to the wares. "...This belt.... Can you tell me some more about it?"
PostPosted: Mon Sep 18, 2006 7:23 pm

"Greetings," Geneva replied, cheerful that this caravan was bringing in business. "The belt? That is..." She reached out one hand. The skin was pocked and marked with barely-healed sores. Fragile-looking fingers trailed over the worn leather of the belt and the glass vials. "That is the Belt of Ithspea. The phials contain rare and unusual poisons - unfortunately, I do not know what each one does, nor what each phial contains. It was made across the Southern Sea, and came into my hands through a trader in Tempranillo.

"He... informed me that he has tested one or two of the poisons, and assured me that they are most potent and deadly."

"Poisons?" The word was more enraptured than cautious- a fact which surprised Emelyn more than anything else. She didn't know why the word had come out so excited, breathy. She wondered if this gypsy lifestyle had made her so open to these more dangerous things- first, the daggers she now seemed to collect, and now... on to poisions?

"Well..." the woman said, pulling her couplet pouch from her side, "I have a hundred couplets."
PostPosted: Mon Sep 18, 2006 7:39 pm

"One hundred?" Geneva leaned back on her stool, thinking, absently toying with the cloth 'round her face. "I may be able to part with it for that much, though it will be a bit of a blow to my profits - I had expected to sell it for around one hundred and twenty-five. Still..."

The gems and silver curling in the shell of her left ear shone in the sunlight as she bent forward again to inspect the belt. "Still, some of these poisons do seem to be oddly low.

"Well." She sat back, meeting Emelyn's eyes. "Tell me why you want it. Maybe I'll part with it for one hundred."

Emelyn looked around- as if to make sure that the others could not hear- but, specifically, she cast an eye over her shoulder to where her son sat, still and cautious on the leadseat.

"I... came to this lifestyle in a very strange moment," she said softly, her voice low so that only Geneva could hear. "I joined this wagontrain a long time ago, because it was something new. I didn't know of anything dangerous or dark in my life before. ...I was from the Dove Forest," she explained, not knowing if Geneva had ever heard of the forest that lay to the south. "And I didn't know anything of the world. Then I came across Pierre. And I needed to protect him. Daggers- knives... anything that's strong enough to feel like I'm in control." She gave a silent head-c**k to point back to Pierre without letting him see. "That's my son. The fae in the Twiggle did something to him. Something I can't explain yet." She tugged her lower lip in between her teeth, then let it go in a soft sigh. "I don't know why those poisons attract me the way they do. But I think... they're just another way of feeling like I'm in control. Like I have some say in being able to protect his future."
PostPosted: Mon Sep 18, 2006 7:55 pm

Geneva nodded slowly, then glanced at her other wares.

"You say the fey did something to him?" She glanced at Pierre, albeit nervously - fey magic was powerful, and Fortunettes could be dangerous if crossed. She'd heard tales of those Fortunettes who had gone bad. "I have a few items that can... assist in seeing fortunes, learning the motivations of others, and things of that nature. I can't answer for you which would be of more worth - potentially confusing prophecies or a feeling of security."

While she was interested in the woman, Geneva was still a businesswoman. Anybody might buy the salves and ungents on her table... but who else might buy this belt? Her inner, supressed feminine instincts warred with her sensibilities as a trader.

Silver carefully lifted a blue container with a green lid from the table. She lifted the lid to observe its contents, but quickly replaced it when the scent reached her nose. It wasn't that it smelled bad, but she didn't know what it was. She certainly didn't want to risk it having an adverse effect on herself or Mherudyn, who was perched on her shoulder. She had left the children in Weathered Melody, instructing Aisrhan to keep an eye on her brother.
"Excuse me, ma'am?" Silver asked when the woman had a moment. "Could you please tell me what this is?" She held the blue and green container before her, but as she lifted it to show it to the trader, a glint of gold caught her eye. Silver looked down to see a small bottle, the sunlight shining on it's amber-colored glass. Immediately attracted to it, she quickly presented it before the trader as well. "A-and this too, please."

Caroline and Rojiza approach the trader with interest, but not much. Caroline can brew some things herself, but isn't one to pass up a trading opportunity when she's coins in her pocket. She looks at the various bottles and vials of multicoloured liquids and nods a little. She's about to turn away before one catches her eye--a pink glass bottle containing a thick-looking red liquid. "What is this?" she asks of the cloth-wrapped woman.

Geneva smiled at the woman (though it didn't show through her clothing), amused at her uncertainty. This caravan was turning out to be so interesting - everybody seemed nervous and unsure, but at the same time, filled with an understated power.

"The jar you're holding contains something called Opening Salve. A little bit applied to the temples and over the heart will make a person open to receiving the whispers of the Meij. It's a temporary fortune-telling item, in effect.

"The little bottle? That's antidote. I'm afraid there's not much at all, but it's potent - it cures all known poisons with a single drop. There's enough for maybe... two, three doses, at most.

"The salve is worth seventy-five, the antidote seventy," she explained, getting down to business.

"That one?" The trader chuckled, a deep, husky sound. "It's called Bottled Ardour. It's a love potion." She winked. "To be of use, it needs to be taken by both parties."

She failed to mention that its effects were really only temporary. That may not have been good for business. But she didn't make the potion - she only peddled it.

If needed, she could always feign ignorance. "It's seventy-five couplets, if you want it."

Not one to dive into anything magical like this without proper consideration, Caroline nods thoughtfully. "How long do the effects last?" she inquires. She couldn't spend her hard-earned couplets on a potion that wouldn't last long enough for a real connection to develop.

Rojiza rolls her eyes and scoffs audibly. A love potion! Mother, she thinks sternly, What use would you have for one of those?

Geneva pondered the question for a moment, then reached out and took the bottle. Her hands were bruised, and a sore graced the back of her left.

"If I remember correctly, it lasts for a little less than a day, but it can be readministerd to equal effect if you would like the effect to be prolonged."

Silver placed the Opening Salve back upon the table. "Well, I don't think I need to get any more mixed up in the meij than I already have. Mherudyn provides more than enough 'fortune-telling' for me," she said, patting the Binay softly on her head. Silver reached over and picked up another container, a black and red one with a cross on the side, though she still held the antidote bottle for consideration. "Would you kindly tell me about this one too, please? It looks interesting." Silver smiled.
