In this thread, everyone is encouraged to post information about all sorts of fun & interesting events that are approaching. As autumn comes nearer, there will be plenty of festivals, and state fairs as well. Other events, such as special museum exhibits, concerts & plays can be posted here too. Let's make it easy for our fellow guild members to find good things to do on their weekends in our states! 3nodding

In September, there is a great Carousel Festival every year in Burlington, NC! They have a beautifully restored 1911 Dentzel Menagerie Carousel in Burlington City Park, and to celebrate it they have this festival. One can ride the carousel, as well as the train & the toddler rides in the kiddie amusement park, without charge. There are other amusements from outside that do charge, also, and plenty of good food, music, and arts & crafts booths. According to the events calendar in Our State magazine, it will be Sept. 16-17 this year. City park is on Church St. (Hwy 70), just west of downtown.

We always look forward to the Carolina Renaissance Fair near Concord. We've never dressed up (but I keep threatening to make a costume, much to the chagrin of my family). Been going for at least last six or seven years. Starts on the weekend of October 7 (runs every weekend through the second weekend of November). Some of our favorite events/performers are the Carolina Raptor show (I'm a sucker for hawks and owls), the Tortuga Twins (all three of them... lol!), Terry Foy (aka Zilch the Torysteller), Don Juan and Miguel, London Broil, and Dead Bob. The food is good too, especially the turkey legs and bread bowls. The Halloween weekend is the wildest - lots of trick or treating for the kids, many folks in their Halloween costumes, and the jousting events are geared for the holiday ("ghouls" on horseback). If you've never gone, you should give it a go. We look forward to it every year. I 've posted the web address for more information, dates, times, event descriptions, and map/directions. http://www.royalfaires.com/carolina/ biggrin

At the end of October is the Lexington Barbecue Festival. It only lasts one day, from 10am to 6pm, but they can get a crowd of 200,000! Main St. is blocked off & filled with art & craft booths, food booths, and 6 stages of all sorts of cool music! There are also rides for the kids. The city sells BBQ sandwiches to support their making a veteran's memorial. You get a delicious sandwich loaded with slaw! They also sell pigtail fries. This is probably the biggest & coolest event this side of the State Fair! BBQ Festival site!

There recently was the annual Spring Water Festival in Williamston SC. I helped out with Air Fore jr. ROTC with parking. I didn't go in the festival though. I stood outside on a blacktop, no shade, no sunscreen, parking handicapped people. I stood out there for 8hrs! Everybody asked what happened to me when I came back to school. I had bad sunburn on me. I started to peel this whole week. IT WAS EMBARRASING!

You got that burn doing something good, though! 3nodding Does it still hurt? Get some aloe gel & put it on the burn. Aloe is excellent for burns. It feels really good on a fresh, blazing-hot burn if you keep it in the fridge, too! 3nodding

If anyone can post a web link to their special events, it would be a good idea. Gives maps, times, etc. Just a suggestion. biggrin
Being very fair skinned myself, I know the misery of sunburns. Eirwyn's aloe idea is terrific. You can use actual aloe leaves from the plant itself if you have one or aloe-based lotion. I would apply this often the first day and continue to apply it a couple times a day for the next several days thereafter. burning_eyes
Another couple of things you may want to try, Jawz, for sunburn... both being done just after you get home and realize you're badly burned.
First, take some Tylenol. It helps with inflammation since a sunburn is actually an external inflammation of the skin.
Second, tea compresses also help reduce inflammation and put moisture back into sunburned skin. Brew a strong infusion of tea... I use 6 family size tea bags brewed into a quart of boiling water. Let the tea bags steep for about 10 minutes, remove and carefully squeeze out the remaining liquid from the tea bags. Pour the tea infusion into a larger container and add ice and/or cold water to cool it down until it is barely warm. Take some washclothes (which you don't mind sacrificing as the tea will stain), soak them in the cooled infusion and wring them out only until they don't be dripping. Then lay the washclothes over the sunburned areas. Repeat the process when the washclothes warm up because of the sunburn.
Hope these ideas help! And next time, sunscreen spf 30 or better and apply before you go outside and reapply after a few hours. Skin cancer later on is an ugly thing.

I saw on TV yesterday that there will be a fair at the Greensboro Coliseum this weekend--the Central Carolina Fair, I think it's called. It also said something about free admission only on the 15th & 16th. Better get there early if you go--I bet a lot of the parking lot will be taken up with the midway rides! I recommend sneaking into the area from behind, at exit 218(Freeman Mill Rd.) which is the way they direct traffic when there is a big game at the Coliseum. There are plenty of signs to follow on that route.
Also, this is the weekend of the Carousel Festival in Burlington, which I love & will definately be attending! There's a "Nationally-known recording artist" appearing Sunday afternoon but I have no idea who she is. One year we got the Dixie Chicks though, so sometimes they do get a big name! Once again, an early arrival is recommended, as parking around the park isn't the best. To get to the City Park from the Interstate, take exit 143 & head north all the way to Church St. (Hwy 70) & turn right. The park is just a couple of blocks on the right.
