I have recently come upon a problem with my goldfish. For those that don't know, Goldies are very sensitive to heat. Well, we have been going through a heat wave and it also keeps knocking out our power (like when I am at work) and so the cooler dies. I have 3 fancy goldfish that I cared a lot for. A couple weeks ago I came home to find all three belly up. I assumed they were dead.

When I looked closer, though, they all 3 were breathing, but the water was like a jacuzzi! I started adding cool water to the tank as quickly as I could with out shcoking them. I righted them again and again so the swim bladder might get better, and finally even the slowest to start swimming again (Lucy) did so. Unfortunatley, the smallest fish, Little Rickie died before morning. Lucy and Don Picard both had blisters bubbled up on their "noses." Essentially 3rd degree burns on a FISH!

They seem to be healing well, though Lucy still swims wobbley.

Now the question I have to ask you is, does anyone know a way to COOL a tank? I have heaters for my other tanks, but my poor goldies need an aquatic A/C!! What do any of you do for your cooler temp fish?

I've heard that adding a few ice cubes works sweatdrop I would recomend moving the tank to a cooler part of your house, If you lower your thermostat so that the house is kept a little cooler and they're in a colder area of your house without any sunlight they shouldn't heat up too quickly. If you have a basement that will work excelent, only once have my fish tanks ever heated up in the basement but my room is only 1/2 way under ground. To help your fish live through power outages you could get a backup air pump, they plug into an outlet and only turn on if the power is out, they're batery operated and air is one of the most important things they will need. As for your fish turning belly up and surviving, I read (last night actualy sweatdrop )that many goldfish have problems like this where they temporarily cant control their swim blader. And since your fish have blisters they'll start turning black in those areas (this only hapens with fancy goldfish) It is a sighn that they are healing, so unless they are already black thats something to watch out for. Also, i've been adivsed to stay away from coolers for my fish tanks but since I've only kept a few whiteclouds I never worried about it.

I just got an Idea, you could get recarchable/batery powered fans and leave them on while you're at work just in case and leave a heater in there to keep the water from getting too cold.

Good lucky! whee

I have been doing the ice cube thing a few times a day this past week. It helps but melts SO quickly. I wish I could afford a house with central air, but unfortunatley, I just rent and all we have is a Swamp Cooler. (an evaporative cooler... have to manually turn it on... no thermostat... and can only go for awhile before needing to "rest") I hate it! I get hot very easily, too... but I can go sit in my car with the A/C on, my fish and other critters can not.

Granted, most of my pets are tropical, and thus eating up this horrid weather. But I have been trying to keep the water for the goldies and my turtle cooler.

In fact right now I just put in more ice cubes because the room tempature water is at 88 degrees!

I do have a fan, but it doesn't seem to do anything but MOVE the hot air around.

About the blisters, they are still just white... you are saying they will turn black before healing?

The blisters MIGHT turn black, i dont know that much about it, someone asked me why there fish was turning black and I did some research. Alot of goldfish do it when they get hurt and it shows that they are healing, I dont know if it 100% always happens but I know that some fish have been purchased as black moores and then turned golden lol.

Maybe you shouldn't keep goldfish though sweatdrop If you can't keep them cool enough then its probably best not to keep them. It sucks but its probably better for the fish if you could give them to a friend or something at least until summer's over. It really sucks to have to give your fish away, I know but I've had to do it a few times when I couldn't keep just one mean swordtail (killed 2 other fish) and I had to get rid of my white clouds because I didn't have enough room for them and I only have a tropical tank wich they would hate. I gave both the swordtail and the white clouds to a friends dad (who is OBSESED with fish lol) and he's breeding them for feeder fish ^^; I get to visit them though lol Hopefuly you can find a temporary home for your fish untill fall

I may end up doing just that. Rehoming them, at least temporarily, I mean. I would miss them, but love them and certainly don't want them miserable. cry

maybe a friend with central air will take the tank till the heat wave is over and you could still go to do the water changes and whatnot sweatdrop

hmmm how much money do you have that you could use to get a water cooler, I know they are made. I have seen them in use before for coldawter species in warm area's.. Try looking up "living stream" it should come up with a green fiberglass tank with a glass front. They have water coolers that go with them. Not sure if you could purcahase a cooler seperatly or not though.

Alot of coolers can OVER cool your tank though so you have to be careful and to get a good one I imagine it would cost a pretty penny

Put a few water bottles in the freezer, and when it gets too hot in your tank, plop em in. 3nodding

Hey, that is actually a great idea. Ice cubes do so little.

Maybe I can help.

I live in the carribean and the air temperature averages 95 degrees and water temprature 83 degrees. Yet I have a goldfish tank and do nothing to keep it cool, the fish are so hyper they give me headache.
The placing of the aquarium is most important. My tank is in full shade, only in the morning it gets some sun rays.
It's also smacked right between two doorways so there is always a draft.
Most important, leave the light off during the day. It can heat up water.
If your tank still gets too hot cover it with a thick cloth, like a towel during the day so the sun dousn't get in. You can also use wet towels, but that generally means more laundry.
The hotter the water, the less oxegen, so it may not be just the heat, try adding some live plants, like the vallisneria, goldfish generally leave those alone, provided their wel fed.

I've had goldfish with white 'scars', though not from the heat. A herron pecked at my pond goldfish, the scars never became black though, they stayed white for life.

Hope this helped, it would be a shame if you had to give the fish away.

I purchased some gold with black dorsal fins and the black started retreating. so now they have more gold and less black.

i started a thread in the goldfish subforum, please check it out.

thank you!
