Since rants aren't allowed in the Gaming Discussion forum, I put this here in interest of those who want to defend Pokemon.

Introduction

Okay, here's the scoop, many people are fickle as to how the Pokemon series truly fits in the modern gaming society. Many people say Pokemon is kiddy, others say it's a truly wonderful game. I hope that this privately-written article by me will provide excellent insight into this expansive yet questionable series.

Now, what exactly is Pokemon?

Well, simply put, Pokemon is an RPG; but not an ordinary RPG at that. I consider the Pokemon series to be the biggest RPG available--but more on that later. The Pokemon series began its debut on the critically acclaimed Pokemon Red Version and Pokemon Blue Version. These two games singled-handedly took the world by storm as a popular gaming fad for all ages. After a few months to years, the Pokemon fad slowly began to recede into the closets of the constantly growing kid generation. But, the end was not near for this game series, and far from it. Nintendo in conjunction with Game Freak, released Pokemon Yellow, Silver and Gold as well as Pokemon Stadiums 1 & 2. These games revived the series for a little while and reminded all the former and new Pokemon gamers that Pokemon is still an integral part of our gaming society. Today, all gamers can now enjoy Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald and Pokemon Colosseum. Although with the recent release of Pokemon Emerald, it seems that all gamers are getting restless of this still thriving series.

What is the cause for all the restlessness?

The newfound restlessness of gamers come from the fact that Pokemon has come a long way from the original 150 and has become a hassle to keep up with. Heck, even I have a hard time keeping track of all them in my head, but I still remember all the original 150 thanks to that PokeRap from the cartoon series. Also, gamers are beginning to think that the series has become rather kiddish. With cute Pokemon like Pikachu and Teddyursa, yes, people can just take a glance and call the series kiddish. But let's really look at this series is it really kiddish?

Pokemon: Kiddish or not?

The appetizer of my article, is Pokemon kiddish? Directly, I must say: NO. I fact, Pokemon really seems like a game that kids can't really play. A week ago, I was visiting my aunt's house and I brought my lame-a** original GBA--without a light--and I had just started a new game on Pokemon Silver since I already transferred all my Pokemon to Pokemon Stadium 2. Now, like every visit to my aunt's house, there are always little kids begging me to play with them; but this time the kids were begging me to play my GBA. So, I gave it to them and told them all the basic functions to all the buttons. When I finally left them alone to play with my GBA five minutes later the kid--which by the way is five years old--who had my GBA said the most beautiful thing a five year old kid could say about Pokemon, "It's too hard, here's your Game Boy back." Like I said before, kids can't play Pokemon, it's too hard for them. This automatically proves that Pokemon is indeed NOT a kiddy game. I'm not totally against kids playing Pokemon, but a truly kiddy game is only one that requires no explanation and complexity whatsoever.

How is Pokemon appealing to the older generation?

Hmm... Tough topic to touch on there... But, yes Pokemon is appealing to the older generation. First off, as mentioned above, I think that Pokemon is the biggest RPG ever devised by any game developing company to date and here's why: Pokemon allows for a high degree of customization that many RPG's simply can't lay a finger on. Okay okay, sure you can level up your character and change their weapons in any RPG, but if that formula is followed, then there will always be an ultimate character. On the other hand, Pokemon has a wealth of 300+ Pokemon each with their own pros and cons. Believe me, if I had a dollar for every RPG that has 300+ choices, I'd have one for every Pokemon game made. Now, think about it, 300+!!!!! I can't think of any RPG with that many choices other than Disgaea (which has 100+) and Namco X Capcom (which doesn't even have an explained concept yet).

More to come... Sorry for the length! Go out and use this to defend Nintendo!

This is fantastic. My mum thinks nintendo is kiddish. I'm 19 now, but I've been playing since I was a kid, so that's probably why.

But Pokemon. Been a fan since it came out. The TV show, I think is a bit boring. Loved it when I was 13. But now the story lines are so simple. I think it is aimed for like, 10 year olds. But I think the games are for a much older audience. you need a lot of knowledge for it, like element types and such.

I never used to understand why I was so captivated by Pokemon. Now I think it's because of curiousity. Each time you catch and train pokemon, you learn lots about it. It's not about 'clocking the game', but like a scientist discovering new species on animals, it about learning and making new strategies. (I'm a science nerd). Because of this, I can play Pokemon over and over again.

Now, I'm off to play Colessium smile

Hoo hah. I freaking love Pokemon, and I'll be continuing to. It's just a different RPG from the FF series...one that you can still play after beating it instead of selling it at the pwn shop.
... xp

But yeah, I really enjoy playing Pokemon. I'm probably going to get Diamond/Pearl (once I get a DS, that is). And, I like everything Pokemon, even (that's right kids) the TV show.

I was sitting in a waiting Room once at a doctors office, and a little 10 year old Kid made fun of me because I was playing the Pokemon TCG videogame on my Gameboy.

He told me the game was for little kids.
I calmy set him out straight, and changed his point of view on the matter, I let him play, and he actually got way into the game, and was sad to see me go.

There is Power in Pokemon.

to me, pokemon is ridiculously stupid. I watched the TV show, and its a pretty good show. Then it went to season 2. The basic storyline for each episode is very similar now, to a point where you can predict almost exactly what'll happen (especially if you've watched it a lot) and now they don't even finish whichever league they are in (I think the only leagues they finished were the original Kanto and then the Orange Islands, but he lost at the end of the Kanto series and then just moved on instead of trying again later).

However, the games are a different story. I didn't like Pokemon Colleseum too much, but all the gameboy games have been good to me (Tomorrow, I'm going to buy Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and Pokemon Emerald) and I plan to keep playing them. Especially because sometimes when I have traded in the game, I'll eventually become really disappointed because I get a sudden craving for the series at times, probably because it was almost my first RPG (this from an RPG fan, and back then I didn't know what an RPG was, I was just young and stupid. Its strange that even then I could still tell a good game most of the time).
