It's really hot here, and I'm melting. Our Introduction to Visual Basic.net class at my local community college...has air conditioning!

I'm also supposed to be doing summer homework (read Crime and Punishment and outline for AP Government)...but I'm slacking off and instead, I'm playing Ragnarok Online.

What are your plans for the summer?
PostPosted: Mon Jul 24, 2006 6:43 pm

Well, if I had decided to take an honors class, I would be doing summer reading...but...

None of that for me. XP

The only plans I had for summer was to draw a whole lots (which I still am), beat Kingdom Hearts 2, and write some more of a book I've been working on.

But, I also played a bit of Ragnarok and just recently tried FlyFF with my friend. whee

And another friend of mine got me involved in a roleplay, too.

Other than that...cleaning out my closet and under my bed is a slow process. >_>; Too much crap.

Huh...and keeping my dogs company and giving them a bath so they don't smell bad, too, I guess. <_<

And chores. Not yay to chores.

Summer? It's only July, I don't plan that far ahead. (In case it doesn't sound obvious, I'm not living in the Northern Hemisphere right now.)

At my school, trial exams start next week. crying

That lasts for two weeks, and then there are six more weeks of school before the end of term. That's still not summer yet.

This is my very last term of school. After that, the exams start on the 20th of October, and they are spaced out so that my last one is on the 10th of November.

After that, the formal is in December and then there's also speech night, but other than that it's "summer" for me.

It's a long way away, but I get three months of summer holiday this year.

I planned to study two different languages, but I'm too lazy. I had a job for 2 weeks.
I want to spend alot of time with my boyfriend, but next week he is going to visit his mother and some friends. Then I'll try to be out all by myself but I always get so nervous when I'm in Town alone, and it's worse when I'm in stores.

Gaia and summerschool. =-= And occasional visits to Barnes & Nobles. Aaah, the AC.... I hate summer. ><
PostPosted: Wed Jul 26, 2006 8:38 am

Kyonie: Crime and Punishment is a weird book. There are like five pages of the main character just rambling and talking to himself on the street, and you have to pay close attention so you won't get lost in the middle of the fourth page wondering what he was talking about all this time. Oh, and it's written by a Russian guy, and it's set in Russia. That makes understanding the currency all the more difficult.

I'm addicted to Ragnarok Online. I'm not playing on the official servers, but on a private server, because I'm cheap like that. (It's XileRO EZ, in case you're interested.) Sadly, there are a bunch of bots and n00bs on the server. Oh, and by n00b, I mean people who continually ask for equiment and items...and all that fun stuff.

Chores aren't fun. They never are. I wish I got involved in a roleplay, though. I haven't roleplayed in such a long time...oh, maybe since three years ago? Mm. I'm feeling nostalgic now.

Mousy (if you don't mind me calling you that): For the rest of us in the Northern Hemisphere, June, July, and August mean hot days and air conditioning. Oh, and no school. You probably knew that already, but I'll say it anyway.

If you don't live in the Northern Hemisphere, then where do you live? You're still in school? I find that amazing. Well, maybe it's because you live in a different time schedule (after all, you live in a different season).

What exactly are your trial exams? Are they like, finals or AP tests or something?

Miku: That's very ambitious of you, studying two languages. Which two languages are they? Because I was planning to learn Chinese and Latin, although I said I was going to learn Latin half-jokingly. Just looking at the questions on the AP Latin Vergil test gives me the willies.

What job are you working at? I should get a job soon...maybe. Or maybe during my years at college. Maybe I can get a job near a computer so I can surf on Gaia at the same time or something.

It must suck to be unable to shop without your boyfriend. Aw, poor Miku!

Shihouin-san: What are you doing in summer school? Getting credits for high school in advance, or learning something you really want to do?

Intro to Visual Basic.net is...kind of fun, yet kind of boring. It's fun because I make programs (like buttsecks programs, it's kind of funny), and just learning how to do things is quite satisfying. However, I'm in a class full of people that may or may not be as fast as me. (Yeah, I know it sounds a bit egotistical of me to say that. Meh.) We do learn, but we learn slowly.

Barnes & Nobles better have air conditioning. It's a good place to be, just to read books indoors all day. The Borders nearby our house has a cafe, so you can buy coffee and pastries, sit in a chair, and read your book.

It's all good.

Er...now I'm embarrassed to say this. sweatdrop My summer school was supposed to be for advance credits, but since that class was closed, I'm making up something I failed during the year. sweatdrop sweatdrop

Yes, Barnes & Nobles has air conditioning, but the one I go to sucks! It's doesn't have a cafe because its small, and the damned thing is so slow to stock up on books and manga! The things that came out months ago still haven't made an appearance on the shelves. ><'' stressed

My summer is almost over...

Le sigh.

School starts in less than a month. But I have one more anime convention before then.

My summer so far has been a mix of anime cons, working, having a birthday, working more, getting a boyfriend, and you guessed it, working more.

I could shop with my friends but they don't have any money, not even enough for the bus/train.
In Sweden each parish help teenagers getting a job for the summer. Like work with old people and such... My job was to clean up outdoors, like removing weed, sweep away sand from the walking-road or whatever it's called, and such.

I planned to continue studying Japanese and Swedish Signlanguage, so I don't forget them, but when I started, I noticed I had allready forgot almost everything stressed I'm not good at languages at all, I'm just interested. So I was like "Orka!" (since you don't have an English word for that, I have to use the Swedish word razz You can borrow it, just like you did with ombudsman!)

Mousy is fine, that's what most other people call me. I know that my name is long.

I used to live in the Northern Hemisphere too. In Hong Kong, to be exact. It's very hot and humid there.

I live in Sydney now.

"Trials" refer to the final internal (as in, the paper is set by the school) exams in the HSC (Higher School Certificate - the final high school certificate in New South Wales), which are meant to be just like the final HSC exams (everyone in the state does the same paper set by the Board of Studies, so it's "external", even though in most cases it's actually done at the school), that's why it's called "trials". It's similar to what might be called "mock" exams in other countries (say, if you're doing A-levels you'd have mock exams before the finals).

Oops, that's so long. Sorry for reminding everyone about school during the summer holidays. sweatdrop

Actually, I'm planning to learn Latin too (and German and Japanese as well - I've started on all of them but I'm not making much progress because I already have to study English, chemistry, physics, economics and maths extension 2 at school). It doesn't help that my first language (Chinese) is very analytic, and Latin is all about inflections.

Shihouin-san:Meh, don't worry about that. School is particularly dumb when it comes to providing education about subjects that will help you in later life.

Like plants. Really, because we need to know all about the xylem, phloem, and apical dominance...when we get into computer engineering or economics. I remember doing great at the start of Biology, then gradually getting worse, until I got a D...and somehow, I pulled off a B for my final grade. I guess my teacher was really lenient.

It's okay to retake a course you failed. I personally cannot do well on subjects I have no interest in. Well, this is assuming that you were in no way attracted to the class you failed. School is dumb like that.

...and you'd figure that Barnes & Nobles would be the first bookstore to stock up with the latest books? Geeze! At least it has air conditioning.

Ummy: I love your name. I think I've said this before, but it bears repeating.

Summers are short, I guess. I haven't started my college applications yet. I did finish all of my Economics homework, but I still need to finish reading Crime and Punishment and my Government homework. Yes, I don't like how school is rapidly approaching. Hopefully, I'll still be valedictorian.

You're lucky that you can go to anime conventions. I have never been to a single one, but I plan to attend on next year. From what I hear, strange things happen there. The particular story about a Manfaye still manages to frighten me. Apparently, Manfayes were banned from the Anime Expo in Anaheim...

Working sucks, unless you love your job. What do you do?

Miku: Man, I wish the churches in Los Angeles did that. Seriously, that is awesome. You have to be very independent where I live, because nobody will care for you. It's all about competition here. People pitted against each other, even just for applying for a class in a community college. You are lucky that your parish helps you out.

Orka! Meh, I don't know what that means, but it gives me the feeling that you're saying, "Oh crap!" or "Oh no!" It's easier to learn languages when you're younger, methinks. Oh, and I would want to see the difference between American Sign Language and Swedish Sign Language...too bad there is no universal sign language. That would be awesome, because it would save all the people who sign a lot of time just to learn a different language.

Mousy: You used to live in Hong Kong? The summers must have been painful there. I once went to Guangzhou and, damn, it's not only hot, but humid as well! I had to live off air conditioning and ice cream during my two-week stay.

Beat me up. I'm Chinese, and I can't speak much Chinese at all. Maybe this is because my parents mainly spoke to me in English, but really, that's no excuse.

Does living in Sydney give you a crazy Australian accent? I've been wanting to have a British accent for a long time...[snickers] Trials equal mock exams? Well, we don't have, formally, 'mock' examinations; and even if we do, they don't really count for our grade. I'd imagine that your trials (that's a cool name for a test -- I find lots of things to be cool, and I hope that doesn't annoy you all) would matter a lot for your HSC.

Wait, your HSC...it's basically the certificate you get after finishing high school? Because we have a really crappy CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam). Here, here's a sample question: What is the square root of 49?

I'm serious, it's horrifyingly easy. The AP (Advanced Placement) exams, on the other hand, are tests from hell. They are provided by the Collegeboard, the same company that provides the PSAT/SAT. Sadly, the Collegeboard is a private company, and yet many colleges require students to send their SAT or ACT (American College Test) scores to be reviewed. Sometimes the United States is too capitalist.

Why'd you have to remind us about school? i haet u (Don't worry 'bout it, 'tis alright.)

It's so hard to learn a language when you have to do other things...like school...ugh, it just takes away so much of your time! The only class I'm really interested in is Economics, because it's mostly about common sense. Of course, less supply means more demand, we all know that. It's basically simple stuff put into bigger and incomprehensible vocabulary.

That sounds like a really interesting book. whee I'll keep it in mind and find a short summary on Russia currency--if there even is one. XD

Yeah, I play on a private server, too, because...I'm also cheap. XD I'm not too interested in XileRO, though. whee

I play on AnimaRO and NamelessRO. A lowrate and highrate server. 3nodding And everywhere you go, you'll always find people like that, I'm afraid. XP

I sort of understand that nostalgic feeling. Except, I only went about...maybe half a year without roleplaying, so...yeah. XD

I'm not really interested in the subjects that I currently do. I only do chemistry and physics because they're easy, and English is compulsory.

Got MSN? I'll talk to you in Chinese. (Well, I speak Cantonese. I can't speak much Mandarin, but may be we can try.)

Xumbra
Does living in Sydney give you a crazy Australian accent? I've been wanting to have a British accent for a long time...[snickers]

Well, I don't think so. English isn't my first language so while I speak it fluently, I won't pick up any accent easily. I'll always have my Hong Kong accent. I think I might eventually pick up enough Australian accent so that people from Hong Kong will be able to tell that I've been out of Hong Kong, but that'll be as much as I can expect. I still kept in touch with some people from my previous school in Hong Kong for a while after I moved to Sydney, and when I said I'll go back to Hong Kong for holiday, one friend said she can't wait to hear my Australian accent. I told her that she's in for a disappointment.

Xumbra

HSC is the certificate after year 12. There's a School Certificate that you get after finishing year 10, and you can stop going to school after that if that's what you want. (There's TAFE for those people.) HSC is for the people who want to go to university. Some schools also offer the International Baccalaureate course, which is for people who want to go to university in another country.

The trials are worth (as a percentage of total internal assessments) 30% each for English, chemistry, physics, and economics, and 40% each for maths extension 1 and extension 2. (Extension 2 maths actually count as two subjects.)

The whole of the internals are 50% of the overall mark, the other 50% is the final exam set by the Board of Studies.

If your sample question from the CAHSEE is anything to go by, I'd expect just about everyone to get 100% or at least close?

Kyonie: There's a note in the beginning of the book that explains the currency, colloquialism related to it (yellow cards apparently refer to prostitution), and things like that. 'Cept I didn't bother to pay much attention to it.

The writing by the author, and also by Leo Tolstoy (who wrote War and Peace), is quite boring yet interesting. The story gets delves into the character's mind and his every action with minute detail which, as it often does, makes for a five-page description of the main character performing a simple act, such as leaving his apartment room. On one hand, you get to examine everything about the main character: his attire, the reason behind his delusional thinking, the way he speaks to himself (for pages and pages), etcetera; on the other hand, the sheer length of the description begs me to play Ragnarok Online. I cannot stand a single chapter without some serious concentration.

Hooray for private servers! I hear that there's an open-source project for Ragnarok Online. I haven't completely scoured the website yet, but it still seems pretty interesting to me. Maybe through that, we can have legitimate free gaming. Mm. Legitimate.

Mousy: Doesn't having the air conditioner on all the time mean massive electricity bills? 'Cause it means power outages in California. In the summer, everyone turns on their air conditioning and fans at the same time -- which is why the summer is also known as blackout season. There's California for you.

But really, I think Californian heat is tolerable. Everyone else is just being wusses.

Whoa, you speak Cantonese? Sweeet. My parents (mainly my dad) are trying to teach me Mandarin. I know that I can't read pinyin at the rate I'm learning, but at least I'll be able to recognize certain words by sound. In fact, we're just concentrating on speaking alone...and I learn incredibly slow. I do speak Cantonese...it's what I natively am, methinks. I think Mandarin is like a weird ripoff from Cantonese. Mandarin sounds weird when you compare it with Cantonese (comparing words like ice water and apple). I have MSN, but I can only use the microphone when I'm on my Windows computer. On the other hand, I can use Skype on my Linux.

Oh, and since I'm in California and you are in Sydney, we'd have to account for the difference in time zones. You are currently seventeen hours ahead of me. I just hope my embarrassment doesn't prevent me from speaking.

Dang, you should have an accent! It would be awesome! ...please?

You'd be surprised at how many people fail the CAHSEE. The education here in the United States, especially California, is quite horrible. The CAHSEE is initially administered in our tenth year of high school. If a student fails the CAHSEE, he is given the chance to retake the test for the next two years until he passes. Seriously, it's horrible. People fail, people don't care. The average student spokes weed in our school. That's why my valedictorian status doesn't mean much to me.

People tell me to stay away from the parish-jobs because the payment is low and blahblah, but atleast you get information about taxes and such, and you can be sure it's legal and so on. Besides, it's only for 2 weeks, I don't want to work through the whole summer like most employers would like me to do.

Well, originally you said 'I don't have ork' when you said you don't have the strength to do something. But now "Orka!" is more like "I'm to lazy to do that!", "It takes to much time!","It's to complicated" or "Whatever, lets not do that!".
