Okay, two things, relating to Gaara, in Naruto have plot holes. One, what happend when Gaara bits his tounge, or gets sick? Wouldnt he feel pain? And if his dad wanted him dead so much, why didn't he just poison him?

It would seem very unrealistic, but since he said he never felt pain...
we have to assume that he never bit his tongue xp
second, I'm not sure about this,
but I think Ninja go through a special training to recognize poison. sweatdrop
Wait, a thought hit me.
Somewhere (I'm not telling where in case of spoilers ninja ) it's said that the sand ninja have only very few medical plants...
so I think it's okay to say, that they don't have so many herbs,
that make a poison, to waste.
I actually have to agree,
that it doesn't really make sense if you think calmly about the manga/anime, but then again...
I don't think that any mangaka (nowadays) think about every little detail,
in their stories.

The only thing I wonder is how he gave himself a tatoo. The sand is supposed to protect him, yet he made it hurt him?...

there may be two logical explanations to that....
1. I've heard that tattooing doesn't hurt THAT much, so it might be that since he did it intentionally (and not intending to kill himself) the sand obeyed his command.
2. since his feelings were pretty much messed up badly at that point he could control the sand so much that it was possible to go around the automatic barrier/defense.

I guess he likes to taste bloody sand. And Pinumbra, I'm not sure. I believe what you say but look at this. I'm pretty sure during all of this he would've tried suicide at least once, andwhen he tried to cut himself in a part we did see, the sand stopped him, but maybe it was just because he was messed up at the time like you said
