I've been taking care of my girlfriends guppies (she's trying to breed them) and she pulled a female out of the tank because it was about to give birth and then 1 of the malse killed the other 2. The tank started as 4 females, 3 males. It was really sad and really odd behavior for guppies. Does anyone have any insight into this matter?

It is not unknown for male guppies to become territorial and aggressive in the presence of breeding females. It's best to have a ratio of at least two females per every male guppy to keep them peaceful. The more females there are to go around, the less likely the males are to feel pressured to compete.

A crowded tank, too little food, and or too few hiding places are other reasons that guppies and other normally peaceful fish might turn violent towards their tankmates.

I'd agree with what has been said, sounds like your m/f ratio is a bit off. I like to have even 3 female for each male. Safer for the other boys, and safer for the girls (get them not so worn out, for one!)

well, since we're considering doing selective breeding we might just have a tank with nothing but males and to mate them put one male in a mating tank with 3 females whee

I breed guppies and I think every now and then you just get a fish with a bad attitude I had one that killed almost every fish includeing females that where in a tank with him so I gave him to my sister and now its the only fish she has. Hes fine as long as he is alone.

I have had so few guppies over the years that were agressive, that I could help you with. I'll inform you now that the agressiveness for my guppies only occur in a small number of males that are less than six months old. Maybe that will help a bit.

Well, as long as the water temperature is around 78 degrees fahrenheit (don't try going above 82 or lower than 74, though), and there is a bubbler and a water filter, they should be fine.

I have a bubbler, a really old tank filter, and a tank heater that's the same age as the filter. I keep the temperature at 80F, and I have a clown plecostomus in there to eat at the algae and leftover food.

Say you get 56 fry -- only about eight of them will live. So just take the fry count, and divide it by seven or something, and you SHOULD get an estimate on how many will live (given the proper water temperature, and water flow, pH, etc.).

HINT: Try using BettaFix Remedy -- only put two to four drops into the tank after every time you clean it. It usually kills off some of the serious bacteria that attacks your fish (at least from what I've noticed). It really works for me.

Thats the wierdest guppy behavior I've ever heard of!I suppose having too little room and having a bad m/f ratio could do it though. rolleyes
