I, myself, have always been a fan of the beautifully done sprites in Suikoden I, and especially Suikoden II. When I heard that Suikoden III (back before its release) wasn't going to be sprite-based, I almost literally wept.

It's because the Suikoden games had such an indepth storyline and that they were sticking with those stunning sprites (when all other RPGs at that time were going into the third dimension) that I was pulled into this game. I felt almost betrayed when Suikoden III came out.

Regardless, I still purchased the game, but I never beat it because frankly, it wasn't living up to its predecessors. Konami should have stuck with what they were doing - they were doing it so well...

Although I do think the game's direction was alittle too different for my(and most) liking, I don't think it did the series injustice, IMO. It seem to have its own charm and flavor, although the music I will say was downright horrid. I personally will away perfer the first 2 over 3, but I just enjoy beaten the heck out of those Rincars with my True Fire, Lightning, Water, and Earth Rune(to bad Luc had to be the one who summoned them, then it could of been a 5 rune elemental slaughter)

Since I didn't see Flik in 3D crying I'll pick sprite

Sprite, most definitely. I didn't like the look and feel of III, it just seemed... too different. There was a different air to running around than there was to 1 & 2... 'twas downright frustrating. I still liked and completed III, but I still don't think it compares to the first two...

I liked Suikoden III better than the first Suikoden....

And I think they pulled off the 3d graphics pretty well, considerign it was their first time using 3d in the series. It'll only get better, right?

Sprites all the way.

I liked the sprites, definitely. But there is only so much you can do with sprites, you know? ...But they didn't reach that point yet >_> I think they would've been better off doing III and IV in sprites...maybe just III...and then start using 3D after that...but thats my opinion.

I'd have to go with sprites.

Although Suikoden III's dolls were pretty well done, the sprites from the first two were just more pleasing to the eye and extremely likeable.

It was just too much of a leap from Suikoden II to Suikoden III in terms of graphics. If anyone has played the Breath of Fire series; you'd know that a similar thing happened. The games went from primarily sprite based to completely polygonal.

The only difference is that the change went as follows:
BoF - Completely sprite based.
BoF II - Completely sprite based.
BoF III - Almost completely sprite based but at an angle (like FFT) so it added that third dimension to it.
BoF IV - Same 'angle' idea like BoF3 but the game had polygonal monsters and kept the sprite based characters. Was a pretty decent mix although the 3D graphics stunk.
BoF V - Pretty much entirely a 3D polygonal game.

I still prefer Breath of Fire III the most though. It, to me, seemed the most well done. Like Suikoden II, the aesthetics of the sprites are downright jaw-dropping.

I've always liked games like that. Disgaea did a good job too.

I prefer the sprites, I have never really appreciated 3D in RPGs... Unless maybe Final Fantasy.. but otherwise, animated sprites are much better 3nodding

though i prefer the sprites its nice to see the characters in a 3d form.
wait i know maybe if they had sprites but in the castle you could see a 3d form of that character like a gallery or something thats how they should have done it biggrin

I also think that the sprites are better. I do not dislike the 3D, but it just does not appeal to me as much.

I liked the sprites better it just seemed more.. Suikoden with the sprites. I think Suikoden 2 had the best graphics in it but that may have been just because I loved the storyline so much and character development

I didn't mind Suikoden III's graphics, I think it handled the jump from 2d to 3d very well. And the characters were just as good as the previous games...

Queen: So, what do we do now?
Aila: How about we go and get some sodas?
All: ............
Jacques: ......Sounds good to me.

Yes, the sprites were one of my favorite features of the Suikoden Series. That and the transfering of game information (which I hear won't be done when IV comes out). All the battle poses and misc. actions the sprites performed were very rewarding. Sometimes I play the game just to see the funny scenes (AKA. When Riou comes home for the first time and his sister sees him XD).
